I'm completely overwhelmed with my room at the moment... there is just stuff everywhere. It seems the best idea would be to take it all out and start over - but that requires more of a block of time than I can pull together right now. But, I've got to start somewhere... though I did get my desk cleaned off.

Kristen, Thanks for the great step by step organization plan. I'm sure your post is going to help a lot of people.
Ashley, I like your storage pieces. I have a few pieces that are the same as yours.

Over the winter, I replaced my wire cubes with IKEA Expediates. Fortunately, I was able to move everything off the shelfs into my daughter's vacated room after getting the shelfs ready to go. Before moving the stuff back to the new shelves, I did a major paper purge & still have 4-5 boxes of paper I need to sort & put on Craig's list. In addition to the new shelfing in my scraproom, I added Expediates to a low wall in dd's old room(guest room) and bought some bins to store extra stuff & photos in that room, along with in progress albums. Now I just need to work on cleaning out closet & closed cabinets. Not sure how I would have managed doing this without the extra room to leverage. Good luck!

I've been re organising the past 3 days. I have a small area in our bedroom. The room has a non working fire place and is on the main floor. The upstairs has two nice size bedrooms with another one that is rather small. So since there was another living room area, my DH and I took the fireplace room. It is rather long. I do have a window but it kind of got stuff put infront of it! Last fall we bought wardrobes (this is a house from the 1800s, closets weren't in back then!) to replace our dressers since we figured being about to have tall things to put our clothes in would be more helpful. This then gave me some extra room. My 10 year old daughter wants to start scrapbooking so I thought I should then re arrange the room. I moved shelves to go up against the wardrobes backs so that I can now get to that window and open the blinds when I want some light! I have some wire cubes that I have added to. I bought an shoe storage unit that is now being used for my vinyl because it's long and I also have some other things in the empty spots like my Mist Sprays. I'm still figuring out what else I can move around. My paper storage is fine so at least I don't have worry about that! I do have a friend who is giving me a shelving unit that she used to use for line and bathtowels (another old house!) but then she found a much bigger one. I was going to use it for our second bathroom (if it ever gets done that is!) but was thinking it's kind of big for that area and most of our stuff fits in the upstairs bathroom anyway. So I might just decide to use this for my scrapbooking stuff and some of my crafty stuff. It does mean it might have to go in the bedroom part of our room but I don't have much choice in the matter! Since we have plaster walls, I'm stuck not being able to nail anything on them. Sigh.

Ashley, I've got the brown organizer on the desk (it belonged to my grandmother), the white boxes (I got mine at Ikea), the cigar boxes (from a tag sale), and the same coffee can in a smaller size (mine has a dent and some rust is starting to set in).
I wish I had the wire organizer that you have on your desk.

Our closets are small and even with hanging a second bar in each there is only room for clothes for that season only. We have very little hanging on the walls because of the walls. The good thing is that the mouldings and other features are of the best quality that you could get for the time when it was built and they suit the house beautifully.

I bought one about 8 years ago at a thrift shop and then found a second one a little while ago at a garagle sale! I painted the first one shortly after I bought it and am going to paint the second one too. I haven't done it yet because I can't decide if I should paint them BOTH so they match or just paint the second one with whatever white paint I have around now. That wire thingy was an awesome find at a salvage junk store/barn. I paid 4$ for it.

If you DO have an expedit, I wouldn't recommend the wicker baskets that they sell for $12.99 in the U.S. They don't hold a lot of weight and I have to be very careful! I agree that the baskets are not ideal-we had ours for the expedit in our playroom for several years, but once our third kid got his hands on them they literally fell apart. And, the opening not being as wide as the interior was a bit of a pain. Plus, over time the motion of pulling them in and out has worn away the finish (all things considered, our expedit has held up astoundingly well-I think this would occur from any solid-against-solid repetitive movement). We switched to the Dronas bins, they are half the price, look great and so far are super-sturdy even under the abuse of Hurricane Lucas. www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10244899/#/30219281

I've got a ton of them in an avocado green color, from the small ones to huge ones, plus a few of them in white. I'm glad I stocked up on the green, it looks like now they only have them in black and white. I think they used to have red, too... I wish they still came in more colors!

@kristinf, I have the green ones, too! They matched my old kitchen. I love the big big ones that fit in the Expedit cubes. I have a few and I keep layouts in them, standing up. Thank you! I've been collecting them for years and I enjoy them quite a bit.

Ashley, That was a great deal on that wire bin. I call dibs on buying it off of you if you ever get tired of it. I think your painted organizer looks more expensive painted. I think the front of it is what makes it so nice. I think any color would look great. I wish Ikea was closer so I could go more often. I would love the storage boxes in a bunch of different colors.

Love your storage pieces ashley. Are those index drawers on the right? Thanks, Annie! They are some kind of metal filing drawer... the bottom two are identical, but two separate pieces. The top two sets are each attached together (so both drawers beside each other are in the same case). My mom found them at a flea market and passed them up so I could buy them!! Well, actually, she bought them and kept them for about a week and then let me buy them. She's making a new craft room out of my old bedroom but decided that I needed them more right now than she did. Ashley, That was a great deal on that wire bin. We were shopping together when I found it, and she's already tried to buy it a few times. How far is IKEA from you? The one in Burlington is about 30 min from here, not far at all, but going to that store is SUCH an ordeal we don't go very often.

It kills me because I always think of a use for something after I've come back from the store. I just saw the new catalog today and nothing really jumped out at me. I like their things so much better in person.
