I went to Italy in October. I planned it all through American Airlines. It was fabulous! I stayed in Rome and did day tours that worked really well. I also booked a cooking class and Rome tours. It was so great. I enjoyed the day tours and met really charming people and I enjoyed having free days to explore on my own. I liked all the options available via Amweican Airlines. All the tours were great and it was nice having everything paid for in advance.
I was traveling solo since my husband couldn't take time off and I had safety concerns so I wanted a safe place to stay. I was very comfortable everywhere I went and felt safe the whole time.
I had an amazing time in Italy. I hope you enjoy the planning. I know you will love Italy.

Choice number 1 for my next trip. I'm taking my kids to Vietnam for Spring Break. I researched the hotels, etc, but I had a tour company book them and our domestic flights. I also booked lots of trips, including spending a day working on a Vietnamese farm, an evening 'foodie' tour around Hanoi on mopeds eating street food, a cooking class in Hoi An, a half day city tour, and an overnight cruise in Halong Bay. We usually don't do many tours when we travel, but since we only have 9 days, I want to do and see as much as possible. We'll also have some time for hanging out at the beach and exploring on our own. I don't think Id like going on vacation with a huge group of people on a tour bus. One day might be OK, but not the whole trip. I prefer to decide on my own schedule. In fact I wouldn't even go on vacation for longer than a weekend with another family.

We like both ways of traveling, it really depends on where we are going. We have been on several group tours with Globus and we've always had a terrific time. We've generally seen a lot and the tour guides have all been quite wonderful. We've met great people along the way as well. At times I have felt a bit rushed, but oh well. In the end I really feel like I've gotten a great experience. Now, when we go to Germany we generally rent a car and go it on our own. We have German friends there, spent some years in the military living there, and I am fairly fluent in German so it is more like being in our second home country than being in a foreign place.

We almost always arrange everything ourselves. That doesn't mean we don't do tours. In Italy, we arranged a private tour in Rome with just our group, and also the VIP tour of the Vatican which gets you out of the massive line. But I much prefer to arrange our own hotels. The only exception is Africa. We dealt with a travel agency that specializes in safaris do arrrange our stays and our connections between the different camps.

I usually arrange everything myself. Most of the resorts have tours we can book. Those are usually in a group but we travel on our own.
