I would cry over the lack of A/C. It's been freaking hot here. We need a good monsoon. How are you surviving? Well we are at the base of a mountain range so we have been getting a lot of rain so far, that helps. But the AC was fixed the next day, no way could I not have that! And sky pea we had some crazy stuff going on this week so I still have not grouted the tile, I promise pics are coming soon!

I opened this thread because of Morelli's Cupcake^^ I finished Plum Spooky this afternoon and am still on an Evanovich high! But I can contribute. DH was driving my old Pilot yesterday and mentioned he wouldn't hesitate to buy another, even with 100K on it. Gas mileage isn't stellar, but reliability and ability to haul kids and stuff is. IMHO your kids are hitting prime friend and gear hauling, I wouldn't downsize yet. If you're into renovation you might like to know it can carry a full sheet of 4x8 gyp or plywood llying flat in the back. It's slightly larger than 48" between wheels well things... I might check out a CRV when I bit next life stage I'm concerned about the crv because I know two people irl who have had problems with two different years. But we are looking to test drive the list I've compiled from this thread and from friends and family. I have not gotten to choose a car in 13 years so this is pretty fun.

We were in the same position recently - loving not having a car payment but not wanting to put any more money into our mini van. We went with a 2014 Dodge Durango, which comfortably fits the six of us and has about as much room as our van did. We also wanted something with good towing ability, which the Durango does, because we'll be looking for a small trailer this year as well. It doesn't get any better gas mileage than my mini van though, but it's far sexier and fun to drive. Have a fun time looking .

I have two kids, now 14 and 17. My Odyssey mini van had transmission issues (Honda known problem) so I had to sell it about 18 months ago. I literally cried and still miss it. I downsized to a used PT cruiser and hate it. It's so small and under-powered. I might give it to 17 yo DD soon and get something else, not sure. I don't drive them both often anymore, but when I do, I like to have the room. Also, just going to Costco is easier with more room to put the stuff. Then we still drive friends sometimes.
DH has a 2007 Prius with over 230,000 miles (bought new). Still on original battery too.

I have a 2004 Odyssey (had transmission issues too and Honda replaced since we bought the expensive warranty lol) when I got her I had three kids age 6 months, 8 and 11. Now I have four kids age 7, 10, 18 and 21. Since the van is still running well knock on wood, we decided to keep her when I got my new car. I went with a hybrid sedan that gets 40 mpg and seats 5 comfortably. I still want to be able to transport bikes and other stuff to the beach and they don't recommend bike racks on my model car. Several of my friends have 2011 Mazda 5s. They seat 6. There's not a lot of cargo room if you have 6 in the car but the seating works. And I feel the bad luck thing - we had just paid for our trip to Hawaii and an entire summer worth of summer camps for the kids when we found out that our renters were moving out and the new ones who wanted to move in wanted new carpet. Fun stuff here.

I so feel you on the "buy one thing, something else dies." We broke down at the end of and purchased a third vehicle so our junior-in-college daughter could have our mini van this coming school year for traveling to her internship. Last week our not-even-4-years-old A/C unit quit working. Among other things, the compressor/condenser (??) needs replacing. Three parts are under warranty but all the labor, coolant replacement, etc. are not. That's $1K, thank you very much. After nearly 15 years of being loyal Lennox supporters, I'm not so sure we'll buy from them again. Hopefully, we won't have to even think about it for several years at least (oh please let that be so!).
Anyway, I bought a Mini Cooper but I don't have children the same as age as yours so it works for us. If I was looking for a car like you mention, I would be looking at the Nissan Murano (sp?). I have a friend with one and I really like it. It wouldn't improve your current gas mileage situation though over your van as it's reported to be 18/24 mpg.
