I saw a recipe on Pinterest that I would like to try. It says to make the cake mix as per instructions on the box. That seems like the batter would be too runny and just make a giant mess. So, I'm wondering if anyone has actually tried it and if so, how they turned out. I have a spice cake mix and I would love to make waffles with it if it really does work.

I cannot even fathom how that would have the right texture or taste. Sounds gross to me.

When my girls were little, we used to make waffles from cake mixes and then frost them. I wish I could remember the recipe - whether it was per the directions on the box or different.

If I did try it now without a recipe, I think I would just add liquid until it seemed the right consistency.

I'm going to just give it a go in the morning for breakfast. I've looked at several different sites, and they all say to make according to directions on the cake mix box.
I'm not sure why it sounds gross. I wasn't thinking of the taste, I assume they will taste good. I was more worried about if it would make a huge, runny mess. I will report back in the morning.

They are very good, Just T - just crunchier than regular cake. Dab a little frosting on them and enjoy. I bet they would be good sprinkled with just powdered sugar - wish we would have tried that!!

I tried it last year, and it was a definite fail for me. The waffles kept on sticking to the waffle iron. I don't make a lot of waffles, but don't recall this happening with regular waffles.

I think they would be too sweet homemade waffles usually don't have that much sugar in them. I now want to make real waffles and top them with some fresh fruit.

Make sure you add a couple of tablespoons of oil to the batter if there isn't some called for or it will probably stick. I think every waffle recipe I have made has oil, but pancakes don't. I'm interested to hear if it works!

We make pancakes out of cake mix sometimes but you don't follow the box instructions exactly there is something different but I can't remember what. It makes the batter a little thicker whatever it is.

Yes we make them for slumber parties all the time. Mix cake batter according to box, I spray my waffle iron with Pam. I use tongs to remove the waffles, they are softer than regular waffles. Add ice cream, sprinkles, drizzle chocolate or caramel to really punch up the sugar content! The girls always request.

We just sprayed with coconut oil spray-- we used to make them with brownie batter too. They were great with ice cream!

I've used bread mix (pumpkin and banana) before and they worked fine. I googled and found someone (probably the Pinterest pin you saw) that used spice cake mix for waffles. spice cake mix waffles

Sounds gross to me because sounds way too sweet and not the right texture.

I also have to use cooking spray on the waffle plates or they stick. When I first got the waffle maker everything was sticking and it was drying me nuts. So off to YouTube I went. I couldn't believe that all I had to do was spray the waffle plates before the mix goes in. Duh.
I have never tried cake batter in the waffle maker. Though I do use a mix that is for pancakes (gives me the instructions for waffles too).

If you love good waffles, there is no better mix than this: Attachment DeletedI will never use anything else. This is what restaurants use. Amazing stuff.

Okay, had to add it to my next cart. And here I thought the best ones were the kind you had to add yeast to and keep the batter overnight in the fridge...
so to answer the OP, no, never tried cake mix for waffles or pancakes. Also think it would be too sweet.
Now one I've been wanting to try (aside from the new malted kind, haha) is stuffing waffles (like the Thanksgiving kind of stuffing)

This makes perfect waffles every time! I actually made waffles for lunch today - it was dumping snow outside and it seemed like a waffles-for-lunch day. The only thing I do to make these even better is to some times add a teaspoon of vanilla to the batter.

Elaine, I just went to Amazon and put the mix in my cart! Also, on the cake mix waffles, we never thought of them as a waffle that you put syrup, etc. on for breakfast - we thought of them as a dessert or a sweet treat.

Never heard of it but I think it must be meant as a dessert item rather than a breakfast waffle. Kids might like then topped with fruit as a dessert.
We are gluten free and I winder if a gluten free mix would work - sometimes there us a consistency/texture issue with batters. Maybe I'll try it for dd. Thanks for the idea.

OH! I've never done it but this fall my son in law made some red velvet waffles. They were divine as a dessert with a little softened vanilla ice cream on them.

I will order directly from the Carbon's website. The 33 oz container on their site is only $8.99, while on Amazon it's $14.77. Crazy!

I just paid $15 shipped for the 33 oz can from the Carbon's website. Now I need a waffle iron! I love mine! It was quite inexpensive when I bought it years ago because it doesn't flip and no frills, but it was highly rated on Amazon. It was around $40, at most. They stopped making them and the 3rd party sellers on Amazon are selling them for between $180-$350! It it is a great waffle maker, but not $200 great. Costco usually carries a nice Waring that flips. We bought it for my SIL and she likes it.

link to Carbons Waffle Mix on sale at World Market it is only $6.99 per can. You can either order online or head to a World Market if you have a brick and mortar version. I noticed that one of the listings on Amazon is for a 16 oz. can. That is tiny and will be gone after one family Sunday morning breakfast. I order the 3-packs of the 33 oz cans. I know that you want to try it before buying a lot, but keep in mind that it goes quickly!

Elaine, thank you for posting the link for the Carbons Waffle mix. I'm glad I just have it in my cart on Amazon and I didn't purchase it already!
