I just wanted to say sorry. I have chronic pain and there is no surgery to fix it. It will be with my the rest of my life. Yoga and stretching help. I also take 40 my of percocet a day. Less if I can. It sucks depending on pain pills but the pain is worse. They really just dull the pain enough for me to get off my butt. I'll never be pain free. I hope you get some relief and if taken correctly you can feel better with pain pills.

Have you tried a pain specialist? I have e found great relief from my back pain by going to a pain specialist. Along with the treatments that worked wonders, he suggested yoga. I also did physical therapy, which I didn't think did much good.

My mom is suffering from Sciatica right now and someone in this thread recommended a Tens Unit. Has anyone else tried it? My co-worker has it too and is doing dry needling at her physical therapist and getting a epidural on Friday. Anyone have experience with that?

My mom had dry needling in her neck for disk degeneration. I was sitting right beside her when she had it. It didn't work for her but it may for your mom good luck!

I had been suffering with sciatica pain myself this last month or so.
I had no pain in my back / hip but my knee was unbearable so I ended up at the doctor who prescribed (brand name) Lyrica (ingredient) pregabalin.
One table at night to see if the pain resolved, if not will have MRI so clarify the situation and referral to a specialist for other treatment.
I have taken five tablets and already there is a significant improvement already so i am hopeful.
Hope you find some relief soon.

If you are in so much pain, I would wonder if your MRI was done right. Did you have a closed or open MRI? I would find the best neurosurgeon in your area for a second opinion. In the meantime, I hope the epidural steroid injection gives your relief.
Oops, just re-read your post, the cortisone shot will give you some temporary relief.
i went down the same road you are on, I think there is a path of things doctors try before surgery to reduce inflammation. Are you seeing an orthopedic doc? I would talk about trying epidural steroid injection (you can get a series of three) and then if that doesn't work consult with the very best neurosurgeon in your area.

I would recommend looking into myofacial release massage to see if it works for you. I have it done (for a different pain in my lower back) by a physical therapist and even after the first session there was a noticable difference for me. Initially I felt like I was run over by a truck, but 48 hours later I was looser and in less pain than I have been for years. For me this is the best option so that I can treat the issue where the tightness is causing the problems and not just the symptoms. My doctor did recommend that I see a PT for this, or a massage therapist very experienced with this form of massage due to some complications she has seen.
An option available to me from my pain doctor was treating the ends of my nerves where I was having the pain. It's not a permanent solution and would have to eventually need to be repeated as the nerve endings grow back. However, it would get rid of the pain for quite a while without having to worry about damage to my organs, or my body getting used to or dependent on narcotics. I'm hoping I can avoid that with this myofacial release massage and PT, but perhaps it is an option available for you so that you can function?
I'm sorry for your pain and hope you find relief soon.

I would try a chiropractor, make sure you use someone recommended by friends/colleagues and make sure he isn't one who thinks you should come three times a week forever. We had one we liked, but he was one of those, so we switched to one who is more about coming as often as you need to once the initial treatment is done. I agree. My DH had bad sciatica pain from a car accident. He finally tried a chiropractor and is so much better. He still has some back pain, but usually just goes back to the chiropractor and gets relief.

My sciatica was so severe I would sometimes use a motorized cart at the grocery store. It was cured by a chiropractor and proper stretches. The chiropractor told me that there's tissue that passes over the sciatic nerve and when it gets too tight it irritates the nerve causing pain.
If you google piriformis stretches you will find most of the exercises my chiro had me do - I had relief in about two weeks and continue to do those stretches and haven't had a significant relapse in years.

Just wanted to say I understand your pain!! I have been there & took a long time to get things figured out. To spare all the details, I did therapy, injections & meds tried every option recommended. The person that saved my life & turned things around for me was my neurologist! I also found great relief with Naproxen 220 MG 2 x daily (per dr. advice). I did try many other meds too. I hope you find your answer soon & get relief! When I have flare ups now, taking Naproxen 2 x day for a couple days cures my ills! Best of luck to you!!

I had it last year, bad. I'm a teacher and had to be put out of work for a couple weeks. It got to a point where I couldn't sit, stand, or lay down without being in extreme pain. I had to sleep sitting on a exercise ball and could only sleep for 1-2 hours at a time. The only thing that touched the pain at all was the pill form of morphine. I had 2 epidural shots, which didn't help. I rested quite a bit over 3 months. I was all set to have surgery because I couldn't take it anymore. 2 days before my surgery I noticed that the pain was starting to subside. I called to cancel my surgery and they told me to call back if I felt I needed it still. After about 4 months the pain was gone. Now I occasionally get the beginnings of the pain but usually take NSAIDs to help. I feel as I'm starting the pain now but unfortunately I can't take NSAID because of blood pressure medicine I'm on. Anyway, I know how you're feeling and it is absolutely the worst. I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy.

That's such a horrible nagging pain. I have a hip replacement so I couldn't do the stretches/therapy. My sciatica was caused by a bulging disc. I received an epidural injection and I've been great since. The doctor told me I would need three injections, but one is all it took.

My mom has had similar sciatic pain for years. Recently, a new back X-ray showed the arthritis in her back had worsened and her spinal fluid was not getting through as well. She had her first of three cortisone shots two months ago and it helped a lot. She had her second shot yesterday but told me that she can't imagine feeling better so she doesn't know what this second shot will do. She still has to have a third shot, and then boosters every year. Her doctors also think surgery might help her but she isn't willing to go that route yet.
She he is also working with a physical therapist - stretching, core strengthening, and balancing.

maybe someone has already asked this, but I am leaving in a minute for work and don't have time to read the whole thread.
How has your muscle cramping been? Has that gone away or gotten better? I remember reading your posts about it and feeling so bad for you. I always get terrible cramps in my feet, and I can't imagine having those same cramps all over my legs. I hope that has improved, but I am sorry for everything else you are dealing with.

I went to a pain specialist. He did an injection in my lower spine first but I didn't get much relief from that. Then he did one in my right butt cheek, right where the pain was/is located. It hurt like a son of a gun but it gave me relief. It still flares up but between the shot and yoga, it is 80% better which is liveable to me.

Like you said, I can't believe that in this day and age they can't fix this, can't even seem to diagnose it properly.
I'm so sorry that you continue to go through this; it must be hell.

Thanks for your update, will keep sending good thoughts, prayers and big hugs. I occasionally get cramps in my toes at night that make them stick out straight and it is a pain beyond belief ~ now I realize how lucky I am that it only hits very occasionally and I will never complain again after reading what you are going through.
