I thought of the peas and how often people mention using Craigslist and other online sources to buy and sell goods when I read this story. A pregnant woman responded to an ad on craigslist regarding baby clothes, and was attacked when she went to pickup/view the clothes. She was stabbed and the baby removed from her womb. She is expected to recover, but the baby died. This happened in the middle of the afternoon! www.cnn.com/2015/03/19/us/craigslist-pregnant-woman-womb-baby-removed/index.html

I saw that earlier - it's one of the saddest, most horrible, heartbreaking things I've ever seen in the news!

Shocking and heartbreaking that poor mom my heart breaks for her. I can't believe the hospital put it together. They said they were trying to put the time line together to put all the peices together. Sick sick woman. The 911 woman did a lot to help her. I can't even imagine. Just horrific. What the crap is wrong with people?!

This is unbelievably sad and she, of course, in no way deserved what happened to her. However, I can't believe in this day and age that a woman went to a private home alone in response to a Craigslist ad. That is incredibly naive.

That is just a horrific story.
SO and I were just talking about the safety of Craigslist sales yesterday. I have several pieces of furniture that I would like to get rid of, and Craigslist seems like the obvious route. This story just validates my decision that the few hundred dollars I could make on the sale of my stuff is not worth my personal safety. I will be donating!

This really scares me because I'm 30 weeks pregnant and we've purchased a lot of stuff for the baby room off Craigslist. My husband & I never go by ourselves to look at/pick up items and when we sell stuff, we always make sure the other one is around if someone is coming to look at something we're selling.

How horrific! My heart goes out to this poor woman.
I will still continue to use kijiji though (more popular here than craigslist) despite these sorts of terrible stories. There are steps you can take to stay safer, and these incidents are very rare.

Just when you think people can't sink any lower. I hope that poor woman gets a lot of help.
The BBC are reporting the following
"She came by this house. She was attacked, and her baby was removed from her," Longmont Police Cdr Jeff Satur told the local newspaper.
Mr Satur said Ms Lane has two children of her own, and that her husband had driven her to the hospital before returning to the scene."
My question is...Did the husband of the accused leave the poor woman at the scene and travel with his wife to the hospital to pass the child off as theirs? If so, why is he not arrested as an accessory? Was the attacked woman left alone for a long time?

I'm sure it makes people feel better about their security to blame the women being naive or that they never go alone. I'm sure the couple trying to buy the vintage car thought they were safe as a couple - right before they were murdered. I posted this in a small part as a PSA for considering ways to maximize your personal safety in dealing with internet sales. But I think it's distasteful to slam this women who had to wait 6 1/2 minutes for help to arrive knowing that some monster cut out her baby and fearing she would bleed out. She might have been naive, but her strength on that phone call was admirable. I have no doubt she'll spend the rest of her life regretting her decisions.

The accused was claiming that she miscarried.

Darcy Collins Thanks for the reply, I will have to work myself up to reading your link. The BBC didn't report where the attack occurred so that was confusing me. Two families changed forever, how tragic.

it's especially heartbreaking that they may not be able to press murder charges. that tears me up. it was a living, growing child until she ended its life, she is not the mother, it was against the mother's wishes, she should be charged with murder.

So sad. If I sell things I try to meet them in a public place. If it's a large item I make sure dh is home. I've never had any problems and this young woman probably though nothing of it either. Unfortunately, you can't be too safe...always best to take precautions.

This happened near me a few years ago. A woman killed the mother and stole the baby. She was caught within a day or so. I guess it was an absolute bloodbath. Baby made it ok, but she was about 8.5 months pregnant.
I can't even imagine what's has to go through someone's mind to do something like that.

Our local police department recommends you use their parking lot to meet for these types of transactions. I think that's a wonderful community support/safety idea. This is just so f#cked up, that poor woman.

This is just so f#cked up, that poor woman. Our local PD has established an area of their lobby as a Safe Zone for Craig's list and other related personal transactions. When I list on CL now, I state any interested persons must be willing to meet there. Heartwrenching what happened to that baby.

That's so sad! A man I know that wanted to buy something from a seller on Craigslist asked the seller to meet him in a busy parking lot (maybe even a police station). That way he was safe!

Wasn't this the plot in that show Private Practice or something? Because this sure sounds like something that would only happen on tv/movies. It is truly heartbreaking that this actually happens in real life. I feel so sorry for this woman, as a mother I can't even imagine.... I am at a loss for words....

I've heard of this happening before. I have used Craigslist a bunch to sell things, hire handymen, movers, buy things, etc. Never a problem. However, even when I sold a car, I never got in it to do a test drive. I figured, hey, if they want to steal it, at least I won't be with them.
I've gone into a private residence to buy my daughter's flute but normally I meet at a Starbucks or similar place.
As far as blaming the victim, it's sort of like saying a woman/man should never go into a house alone with their date. When does it become ok? After so many public dates? Anyway, I feel terrible for this mother/father that were excitingly expecting their child to be born and all the plans that go along with that.

This is so incredibility sad and disgusting I'm usually fairly easygoing and sometimes too trusting. But I also read true crime books so CL is one of the places that I think I'm pretty cautious and not trusting. I have only bought a cat tree off CL and met in the Home Depot parking lot. Years before I did get my rescue cat from CL and that probably wasn't smart to drive down there by myself to meet him (the cat) I do trust my instinct though and did not feel any funniness at all.
