There are plenty of odd foods that should be on that list- tripe, menudo, thousand year eggs, durian fruit, head cheese and pretty much all jello mixed with meat main course dishes from the 50's and 60's. Menudo is not odd. Menudo is made with tripe and cows feet, I am sorry if that offends you, but I find that odd.

I am Ukrainian and head cheese is something we supposedly eat. I will not go near it. Menudo doesn't sound too appealing but if people love it it's your thing, right?
Let's get back to the chicken fried steak...

I don't know what is regional other than Dole Whip is from Disney. Dole Whip isn't really what most people would consider a regional food - regional foods are traditional foods in a certain geographic area - think grits in the south, poutine in Canada. Dole Whip is a single product sold by one company, it's not representative of a tradition or food culture. While there are things on that list I don't eat/don't like, I think it's insulting and narrow-minded to say they are foods that "shouldn't exist". I like and eat (or have eaten) many of the things on the list. Most I don't eat with any regularity because they aren't at all healthy. I love chicken and waffles, country fried steak and white gravy, meatloaf, mayonaise, grits, and peanut butter and banana sandwiches (great way to use over-ripe bananas), and gumbo. I have no interest in olive loaf, pickled pigs feet, scrapple, or gizzards. Chitterlings gross me out and are really the only thing I would leave on that list, but that's my bias - I know there are people who enjoy chitterlings.

I don't know what is regional other than Dole Whip is from Disney. I don't know how white gravy is made. (I have only had brown gravy). Chicken fried steak looks good (I do like deep fried food but can't eat a lot of it) but have no idea where it is from. Pickled pigs' feet? No clue. I just wondered if people ate these kinds of things. I don't eat jello as it reminds me of a stomach procedure I had done years ago. foolana put me on ignore already. You are caustic all the time on any post I write. Clearly you do not like me so remove me from your existence. Who the hell is afraid of a food? Several people agree with my post so please don't act like I'm the only one who doesn't get you. I don't get Delta Dawn either. Her mom is sick in the hospital, talks about spending a lot of $$ on stuff and a whole bunch of other stuff. Something isn't adding up. IMHO

No, it's actually pretty standard here to serve sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top. I myself don't care for it but love to make my sweet potatoes with a brown sugar and nut crumble topping. I get the sweetness, I eat sweet potatoes, but to add that much actual candies to a veg dish isn't appealing to me but I appreciate that its a cultural difference when i was a kid i would eat the marshmallows and leave the sweet potatoes!!

What about liver and onions? My father loved when my mom cooked that for him. It was the only meal she let us skip out on!

@gar - To explain the marshmallow-topped sweet potatoes: have you ever toasted marshmallows on sticks over a campfire? If you have, you know how delicious the toasted crust and melted center can be. When you make a sweet potato casserole, you have to add the marshmallows at the last minute (otherwise, they'll puff up and spill over the rim of the casserole dish onto your oven floor, and you'll have a sticky mess to clean up before serving Thanksgiving dinner to your guests--ask me how I know!! ). Anyway, if you do add the marshmallows, you have to watch carefully and pull the dish from the oven when they are just golden brown but not quite ready to spill over. Think of them as the topping--like frosting on a cake. In our house, they're a once-a-year indulgence, a trip down Memory Lane for my DH.

I must be an adventurous eater...chitterlings, burgoo (actually I think I might have had this...), gizzards and pigs feet are the only things I have never ate. I have seen it, smelled it, walked (ran) away!
Odd some of the things on the list, never considered them regional favorites, they were always staples in our house.

How hard is it to be nice? as for the OP, I didn't know that there was a dish that contained both opossum and squirrel.....that's a little too rural for this city girl.

Sausage white gravy with homemade biscuits is great as well!! Now I'm hungry... Oh my, I have sausage, I have flour and butter and milk. I have toast instead of biscuits. I'll be back in a little while... . Only white gravy on my chicken fried steak too.

Menudo is made with tripe and cows feet, I am sorry if that offends you, but I find that odd. No pigs or cow feet for me, just tripe. I've never seen it made that way (with feet). No worries, I'm not offended. Its not for everybody. It's totally an acquired taste.

I was in the mood for menudo a couple weeks back but didn't feel like all the work that tripe takes. I instead made it with pork carnitas and it was amazing! We also serve ours with corn tortillas or garlic bread.

All I have to add is after reading that list, I want some Cincinnati Chili from Skyline. Like right this second. Yuuuuum. I wonder if Nashville has a Skyline...
And when I make my chili at home, I top my bowl with lots of cheddar cheese. And DH and I were just talking about serving it over noodles next time. Ha!

I will admit this that I do like deep fried food. I realize it's bad for my arteries but I do like it. I like butter. I love butter on toast and waffles or pancakes, etc. But deep fried butter I am struggling with. Is it not so rich that it makes you feel kind of sick inside? I am betting that the deep-fried butter photo was lifted from some state fair website-- state fairs are notorious for having food stalls with all sorts of odd things for sale that people wouldn't necessarily actually eat. For instance: deep-fried pickles (not so odd, actually-- it's sort of like fried zucchini), deep fried beer, deep-fried oreos, snickers bars, or twinkies, deep-fried koolaid or lemonade, and even deep-fried butter. It's just a novelty, not an actual 'food' that you would find on a restaurant menu.

Never liked "olive loaf" and wondered just why it was ever made. I like "Strawberry or Cherry Jello Salad" (a dessert not a side dish), never liked the stuff served in the school cafeteria that had shredded carrots in it. Kraft singles, hands down over Velvetta, but I still like Emmentaler/Swiss or Munster cheeses better. I go with real mayo (not Miracle Whip), and homemade "fry sauce" is better on batter fried fish than tarter sauce. Lots of the "Southern Foods," which was most of that list (battered fried butter???) No thank-you.

Errr.....those are mostly way outside my realm of knowledge. And marshmallows on top of a vegetable dish??? That's a bit odd isn't it? I agree! But then, we're European, so I don't think we'll ever "get" it. But, I'm from the country of sausage and waffles, smalahove, lungemos and lutefisk, so what do I know? (And some people think pig's feet, cow's tongue and tail, is delicious. I don't know, I hope I will never have to try it).
