I once drove off from the gas station with the nozzle still in the tank. Ripped it right off the pump. It was awful, the pump guy had to make a mad dash to the emergency shut off button, there was a spill...OMG so embarrassing.

My mom once did the exact same thing. She didn't think the garage door was about to fall on her, though. Just just plumb forgot to close the driver's door before pulling out. Oops. She also once sneezed while parallel parking and slammed into the car behind her. (Her sneezes are legendary.) Oh, and then there was the time that DH pulled into the garage with his bike on the roof of the car. I mean, he was sweaty from his ride and had the sunroof open. Not sure how he forgot it was up there. Amazingly, the bike and house were fine. The car, though, had four dimples on the roof from where the bike rack was. He still hasn't lived that one down.

I'm not perfect by any means but I am surprised by the number of people here who don't look before backing out of their driveways. What if there was a child or pet in it? I know many people may live where there isn't a lot of foot traffic so you don't expect children to be there, but I'm a complete nut about checking! It takes just one scare to make it a habit.
A couple years ago I started out my driveway, slowly, after looking...happened to look again and a kid had come out of nowhere and was right behind me. Scared the living shit out of me.

I backed into my oldest daughters car, so had some marks on the back. About 3 weeks later,my youngest daughter backed into my car, so I had marks on the front, too!

My tale of woe is not an accident, but it did end up costing us over $5000. We were on our way to the mountains for a skiing trip, and my car engine blew up. Totally my fault, I was waaaaay overdue for a service and the oil had clogged. We were 2 hours from home and 2 hours from our destination in the middle of nowhere. My MIL and SIL came to the rescue with a 4+ hour round trip to bring us another car so we could continue on our journey. My car was towed to the nearest country town. DSO was FURIOUS and was swearing and carrying on. I was in tears and said to him that I knew it was all my fault and I felt like crap and begged him not to make me feel worse. Thankfully he calmed down and didn't say another word about it. We're still recovering financially from that, 4 years later! (We couldn't claim on our insurance.)

My DH wrecked a car on a test drive. In. the. parking. lot. I have never laughed so hard in all my life. He was PO'ed and embarrassed. I think I could wreck just about anything and still have the upper hand on being angry. It's just a material thing. That's what insurance is for.

My mom also drove off at a gas station with the nozzle still attached to her car. My dad's good friend owned the gas station and had been talking to my mom. There were a couple of guys with him, and I think they were flirting and got her rattled. It took her years to live that down.

My dh is also the close to perfect one. We were leaving my best friend's house after a Super Bowl party in our ginormous Suburban. It was dark and her driveway was extremely steep and curvy. He was backing out. I started to tell him the best way to get out. I had it down to a science since I was there almost every day. He gets really irritated when I try to give him driving directions, so I just shut my mouth and closed my eyes. He plowed over their mailbox!! It was all I could do to contain my laughter!
Yeas later after the same friends had moved out of state and were visiting us, he backed into her car in the driveway leaving for work!
Hopefully your dh will realize it was an accident and get over his anger.
I've done my share of stupid things too, but accidents to happen even to the most perfect people!

ONe day as I am pulling into the garage, DH called me on my phone, stupid me answered. I became distracted and I didn't pull up far enough. When I got off the phone, I pushed the button to put the garage door down. It scraped the trunk lid and bent the $hit out of the bottom of the garage door before the safety mechanism caused the door to go back up. I was so embarrassed and angry at myself. DH came home and was able to bend the door back and then took my car to the body shop. Fortunately, they were able to buff out the scratches. I was way more harder on myself than he ever was. He told me every one makes mistakes and gave me a hug. My husband did this to our brand new Audi. He was so upset with himself over it I couldn't possibly be angry with him. Mostly I was relieved that I didn't put the first scratches in it. Shit happens. I'm sorry your dh is being a butt about it OP. Try not to beat yourself up over it. I'm glad you are ok!

I'm curious to know how your pumps over there work. Are you able to put the nozzle in then somehow set it to fill without holding it? I can't think how else you could forget to put the nozzle back. Here you have to hold the handle on the nozzle down the whole time you are filling the tank, then you have to put the nozzle back in the holder before the guy in the store can ring it up.

I did that. I pulled the car in and forgot to put it in park....it rolled down the driveway and hit our other car...then they both rolled into the street. Then one time well, 2 times the garage door blew down as I was halfway under it and smashed my hood.... This was before garage door openers kept them kinda stable. Accidents happen and your husband needs to get over it....

AussieMeg There is a little metal "thing" in the handle of the pump that you can use so that you don't have to hold it the whole time. Most people pay at the pump with a credit/debit card, so you don't have to go into the store and pay the cashier at all.

I ripped a side mirror off a week old car...I'll never forget the sight of all those wires pulling out... Like in slow motion.... I almost ripped The side mirror off of DH's brand new Camry while backing out of the garage while he was watching! I say almost because it still dangled there on its own. Had to be taped on when going through the car wash. He laughed at me then stopped because I was crying and felt so bad. That was it. Shit happens.

Oh yes. Some years ago, we went on a ski trip. We had a suburban at the time that barely fit in the garage. We had a ski car top carrier. I said to dh when we got home, please take the carrier off because I'm afraid that when I get home from work tomorrow that I'll forget it's on there and drive into the garage. He said that he was too tired and that he would do it the next day and that surely I would remember that it was on there. So, in I came after work, right into the garage about halfway as I heard the huge crumple sound. I got out to see if it was best if I pulled the rest of the way in or if I should drive back out. Drive in, I decided. Dh came home and he knew better than get too mad at me. He had to take air out of the tires of the truck to get the carrier off. The car top carrier was ruined. . He should have listened to me!

Most people pay at the pump with a credit/debit card, so you don't have to go into the store and pay the cashier at all. Thanks for the explanation. The pumps here used to have that back in the "good old days" when the attendant would fill your tank for you, but not anymore. I wonder if it's for safety reasons? Also, most of the petrol stations that used to have "pay at the pump" facilities here have gotten rid of them now - they want to force you to go inside the store and hopefully make additional purchases. Too many people paying at the pump = less revenue for them. It's a PITA.
