If it's a new rug, send it to a professional rug cleaner. Unless the cost of such isn't justified by the replacement cost of the current rug.

Even though it can be a pain , can you use a baby gate to contain her to one room ? I am glad you are committed to this pup, they are family for life even with their issues. Thank you for caring for this pup...

See avatar for what she looks like. She is NOT that innocent looking. To me, without the rescue we would not have our dog so I support rescues. I would adopt from one again and if I had no other choice but to place a pet in a new home, I would put a pet in a rescue before I would take it to the SPCA. you just don't get it. You can support rescues by adopting from them. You don't support them by giving them more pets. You are not doing them a favor. My point is that the OP should not give up the dog to anyone but her DS. Those are her options IMHO. Keep the dog or give it back to DS. Thankfully she is a good enough person to agree. Giving a pet up just because "it's not the right fit" or "not working out" gets you unequivocally placed in the "you're a piece of shit" category.

We use Nature's Miracle for removing any dog or cat pee/puke/poo stains and accident areas in our house. You can get it at most pet stores, feed stores, etc.
good luck!

We do things for our children because we love them and don't want them to struggle. But in the long run, that is not always the best thing. It's ok for us to say no to our kids sometimes.
With that said, I'm glad that the dog is with you and being well cared for.

I understand that it's hard to say no. My kids are now almost 15 and 18. They want more pets (we have 3 cats and a dog) but I have had to say no since I don't want to be left with them when they go to school/move out.
I left my dog with my mom as she was in love with him.
I hope you find a solution. I have a cat that refuses to use the litter box. Drives me nuts. She also hates me but likes everyone else in the family. Not sure what her deal is. The other 2 cats and dog are fine with me though.

I lay my area rugs over a few wooden 4x 4s in the driveway. That keeps the rug raised off of the concrete. I spray all the really dirty spots with pre-wash and rub it in, then wet it down with the hose, slop a bucket of detergent on it, then rinse it all out with a high powered nozzle on the hose. I just leave it lying on the 4x4s while it dries. Do it on a hot day and it dries in a couple of hours.

I get that you want your son to succeed. I think that it is possible for him to do so with a dog.

I give you a lot of credit for taking care of the dog after your son couldn't take him with him. I read your post as more of a vent. Here you got stuck with this dog that you didn't want and he's making a big mess in your house. You did your part already and you don't need to feel guilty about insisting your son take the dog. You also don't need to feel guilty about telling him he owes you a new rug. I totally agree. You did a kind thing, tried to help your son. Once he's in a position to take the dog, he should (and you shouldn't feel bad about it). You're a nice mom.

This is how I got my dog 7 years ago. My daughter had him in college and then, when her rooming arrangements changed and she could no longer keep him, he came to my house. I fell in love with him and - a year later - couldn't give him up.
We all deal with these situations differently. Hopefully your son will be able to make arrangements for him. Otherwise, may I suggest you get your carpet cleaned, roll it up and put it away, and buy FLor carpet squares for the time being. They are rubberized underneath so liquids don't spill through and can easily be lifted, washed and dried.

Thank you Yubon for standing up for the dog.
Thank you OP for refusing to rehome it. It's not the dog's fault, it is your son's fault. You are a GOOD pea! (and a good mom!)

I also think you should get the rug professionally cleaned since it is expensive.
A lot of the dyes used in wool and silk rugs can run and some detergents can make the dyes fade or damage the rug material itself.
As dogs age, they tend to leak urine. You could put a diaper on your little dog for a day while inside and see if there's any leaking. If that's the case, then you'll know that the other dog is going to mark the spots where the other dog marked because they're dogs and that's what they do.
I totally understand why you kept the dog. I would also totally side with you if you decided that you're too attached to the dog to let your ds have him in a couple of years. That would be a great lesson for your son to learn.

Ok but what about Lupe our family friend's dog. The father went into a condo as he had to sell the house and split the proceeds of the sale with his ex-wife. The dog couldn't go into the condo. They had a choice to make, either put the dog to sleep or give her to a shelter. I agree the dog is the son's problem, but what happens in a case like the above scenario? I am sure the whole family was very upset Lupe went to a shelter, too.
I will adopt from a shelter AND I will continue to support people who are forced to give up pets i.e. death, major life changes etc. giving pets to shelters. You may not agree with me and that's your prerogative, if my Josie's owner had not given her up to the shelter I wouldn't have her.
She is hungry again. The whole family needs to know she is hungry.

Thank you for loving the sweet pup! Sounds like you have a big heart. I agree with crating both dogs. Don't want pee on the rug at night? Don't give them access. Sort of like when people say my dog chewed up such and such or ate such and such off the counter- well then pick up your crap and they can't eat it!

The whole family needs to know she is hungry. when my son and dog first came to live with me, I lived in a condo. I was allowed one small dog. That was my dog. well, son brought his dog and we let her move in and we broke the rules. Daughter moved in and she brought her dog …. we broke the rules again. 3 dogs in a condo was too much for me, but i will not tell my children they are not welcome in my home, unless they are on drugs or going backward in life. In my case, both kids were enrolled in college and working. I was just lending them a hand, by letting them move in with me. We moved back into a home we own and now i can have my own rules about pets. The pets did no damage to the condo and I left the condo in better shape than when i moved in. I got 100 percent of my deposit back. If it was a choice between my home and shelter…. i would find a new place to live, which i did. Everyone does what is best for themselves i guess. PS… my daughter just got her Nursing degree, because i let her move home with her dog. She's now on her own…. with her dog. Hopefully son will do similar...

I agree with the others that say crate train. I also recommend either putting down either hardwood or porcelain tile. I put that in when I did the Basset Hound rescue and it was fabulous. It cost less than carpet to replace, no stains, and easier to sweep up dog hair.

If the dog is housebroken and is Peeing in the house, is there any chance that it has some type a bladder infection?
If it's not a medical situation then crate training would probably make both you and the dog happier.
And I am with you. You don't just rehome a dog because it's inconvenient.

You deserve your freedom and he is the responsible owner of the dog so he should either take care of it or find it another home.

I wanted wood, but i know wood is not as durable as tile with pets.
