I looked on a map where it is as I had no idea where it was. It is a Great Lake State? The very tip of it is on Lake Michigan. Indiana Dunes is a wonderful national lakeshore Most of IN is landlocked.

You perfectly described the thought process behind the term 'Chicagoland'!! When we lived there, I never understood that. You don't have Seattleland, or San Diegoland so I never understood why Chicago labeled it's self that. But the 'rest of the state' is exactly why!! Hmmm. I think "Chicagoland" is just a goofy term unique to Chicago. One theory is that it caught on because it's hard to say "Metro Chicago." It dates back to at least the 1920s, so who knows? Just don't say "the Chicagoland area." Well, don't say it around me. Drives me crazy. So redundant. So many unnecessary syllables. I assume that Seattle and it's surrounding counties are called the Seattle metro area? And San Diego, the same? Chicagoland does just mean the metro area, including the surrounding counties.
