I was thinking of his death by cancer, and the anti-smoking commercial he made, and googled it to find out when it was. Turned out I was way off.
Do you remember? Doesn't have to be exact day/month/year. If you get it within even a couple of years you're much closer than I was!

I would guess about 1976. I'll never forget that commercial! What a brave man he was to make it.

Around Halloween 1985. Could be 1986.

I know who he is.
I looked up when he died and I was only a few years old at the time, so I don't remember it and I had never heard about the commercial. I wonder if it's on youtube.

The best I could guess would be mid-80s.

Name is familiar but no idea why. Why would his death be remembered?

I was off by a couple of years. I don't think I remember the commercial you're referring to though.

I think the bigger question is why am I supposed to know when he died? I don't remember the commercial he made, so I'll say 1985 without reading responses. ETA: OMG! I promise I didn't google first!

I don't know, so I had to look it up. I had also never heard of the commercial and found it a few links down when I Googled his name:

Yul Brynner was an actor, probably most famous for his role as Ramses in The Ten Commandments. It was seeing the movie this weekend that made me think of him again and wonder.
He was a smoker, and died of cancer, and he made a power anti-smoking commercial, which was much talked about at the time (and I think it is available on youtube).
I won't give the actual date yet, I'm curious to see what others might think.

No one is necessarily 'supposed' to remember him, or when he died. The thread was more for those familiar with him, who do remember his death by cancer.
We often remember things that happened in the world according to what might have been going on in our own lives at the time, etc. I was just really off this time, and for interest sake wondered whether others might have a more accurate memory than my own!

I remember him from The Ten Commandments of course but also from Westworld, which was popular amongst my friends when I was a teen. I didn't know he was from Vladivostok! I have a friend from there.

I am super terrible with dates. So the fact that I couldn't pin down a date is completely related to that issue of mine and has nothing to do with Yul Brynner. I couldn't give you a date for any other actor who had ever died, either. Basically, I can recall seeing that commercial in a certain house, and that's how I made my guess....based on when I would have been in that house.

before I look, I'm guessing early 80s because I remember the first time I saw it. Around 81 or 82 maybe?

Yul Brenner is also widely known for his Tony & Oscar winning performances as the King of Siam in the musical The King & I. That movie was my niece's favorite. She actually wore out a VHS tape and mom had to get her another one! I'm singing "Shall We Dance?" now.

I remember him dying so it had to be around 1985 or so. I was a big fan of The King and I growing up.

So that makes perfect sense to me. But I do not remember when or how Yul Brynner passed.

I love "The King and I" and I certainly know who Yul Brenner is, but I have zero recall of that commercial or the circumstances/timing of his death. My memory for those things is terrible. There is an iPad game called "Dead or Alive" ( morbid, I know) and I always suck at it, even though I'm so into movie stars of yesterday and today.

I remember the commercial, but couldn't pin down the time.
But when I was 10 or 11 years old, I had such a crush on him (well, I guess I had the crush on Ramses). It just amazed me that a man could look so good in a dress.

I know he died not long after I graduated high school (1983), but I don't recall ever seeing that commercial. Wish I had, because I smoked from age 14 to 47. (Three years smoke-free now, but yeah, I should never have started and definitely should have quit much, much sooner.)

One of the sexiest men ever in Hollywood imo, and The King and I was my favorite (the sexual tension in the Shall We Dance scene - oh lordy). I dont know off the top of my head when he died though.

I remember him from The King and I as well. He and Deborah Kerr had some excellent chemistry!
