There's a local photographer who shared a photo she took recently of a newborn "just before she was separated from the tree of life".
The photo is taken from above the newborn, looking straight down onto her full-length body with the umbilical cord still in-tact and connected to the entire placenta, which is laying there next to her and does, oddly enough kinda look like a tree. It's all on a white background...no idea how she achieved this. Perhaps it was a home birth?
From the comments, people either think it's amazing or they think it's gross.
I think it's curious but placenta just isn't my thing...if I wanted a photo like that I would at least warn people before showing it to them.
Have you seen this done before? What did you think?

I think YUCK but I'm sure there are plenty of people who think it's a thing of beauty. Whatever.

It's not my cup of tea but, to each their own. I can't imagine saying to friend, "Want to see a picture of my newborn and my placenta?!"

Interesting for me. Depends on how the picture looks, I guess. I could see it being a beautiful picture, but I could also see it as very gross. Interesting.

I think it is a highly personal thing which has meaning to the parents and family so who am I do judge. I do hope that the photographer had the family's permission to share. Do you know OP?

I honestly don't care. Her photo her choice to share...as long as the family okayed it of course. I don't see why a warning is needed.

I think I'd need to see the photo first. I suspect it could go either way.

Sounds disgusting. Not something I would be interested in documenting, have documented or share with anyone.

I'd just wonder why the baby was still attached to the placenta. All of my babies had the cord cut before the placenta was delivered. Is it normal to do it that way? Is it a home birth thing? Were my doctors weird?
Apparently I can make a picture of a baby I haven't even seen all about me. That's talent.

It sounds interesting. I'd have to see it to know, really.
However, I'm sure my DH would faint or something. Not a fan of childbirth that man.

It's fairly common for the cord not to be cut during a home birth until the placenta is delivered, so I'm certain it must have been a home birth.

I'd really have to see it to comment. Is it black & white or some muted color scheme or is it full color and brightly lit? That would probably influence my onion (um, thanks, autocorrect?!) opinion greatly.

Apparently some choose to leave the cord in-tact and let it continue nourishing the baby until it dries up on its own...from ten minutes to ten days. (I did like 5 minutes worth of reading about it.) it's called lotus birthing. You can google. Both my births involved surgeons and drugs to keep me from dying...I wasn't in a place to be concerned about extra time with the placenta.

You'd have to buy a second bouncy seat just for the placenta.

I'm not a fan of anything childbirth related, the whole thing scares the living crap out of me so no it's not a photo I'd want to see.

I don't have a problem with it. I think if well done, it can be artistic and beautiful. It's a placenta, not a heaping pile of steaming poo or something.
While I do not have photos of any of our placentas, I did appreciate and enjoy it when my midwives examined it with me and showed me areas of interest.
I also always wanted to delay cutting the cord but never could due to the circumstances of my births (too fast, or way too long, and pitocin injections had to be given).

MMM, no, I don't want to see the placenta any more than I want to see someone's kidney stones in a jar.

DO NOT GOOGLE ATTEMPTING TO SEE THE PICTURE. Seriously, DO NOT DO IT!!!! I thought it could be an interesting picture. I am not easily grossed out, but apparently a lot of people like to post really gory, full color pictures.

I couldn't find it - I found a zillion color pictures of placentas attached to babies in varying states. There were also a few preterm babies. It was very, very bad. I need the Clorox emojicon!

LOL I googled what I thought might bring it up and the first photo I saw was a morbidly obese lady with her lady bits hanging out. I couldn't look any further than that - but I am curious to the artistic value of the original photograph.

Yeah, so...I have photos of my placenta. DH is a photographer and took photos of it. (I also have amazing photos of our son at just a few seconds and minutes old, so I didn't hold it against him THAT much when he said he also took photos of the placenta.) I did NOT want to see them, but my BFF was visiting a few years ago and begged to see them - she was a few months pregnant with her first and had morbid curiosity about the whole thing. Time had passed and I was much less grossed out/much more intrigued. They are...interesting?...to have. But we don't pull those out with the rest of the newborn pics.

Let's see if this works. I found lots of pictures. Most weren't too bad but I'm not overly squeamish. Looks like some people take the placenta and have a print made from it and it looks like a tree. Some are actually quite pretty.

Nope, that was nasty and I couldn't resist clicking the spoiler. I don't care what anyone else does with their placentas or anything else, but I don't need to see pictures of it!
