Well several days ago I dropped off all of my information at the bank so that my taxes could be done, and I was supposed to come back this morning to sign the papers. This morning I find out that I have to pay over $500.
I have never owed, ever. So I'm in shock. The kidlet and I are very low income. Kinda scraping by type of income. I don't know how I'm going to come up with this money. I don't even know why I owe it.
I wouldn't have even filed except I heard that I had to because of the healthcare thing. This whole thing is a fiasco. I am paying for insurance that I can't use because I can't afford the copays and can't afford all of the medications that I need and I can't get any help with it because I have insurance. I just want to get in bed and stay there.

That's your starting point then, find out why you owe it. Maybe it's a mistake (everything crossed that it is)? Hope you get it sorted out.

I'm sorry, that sounds like a really tough situation. Did you ask about why you owe? If not, I would definitely make an appointment to have it checked out; perhaps an error was made.
I had a "go back to bed and stay in bed all day" day last week.. and I DID get back into bed and stay there until dinner time!

Ugh,that is frustrating.
Have you tried doing them yourself to make sure they have gotten everything correct?
I feel your pain on owing, we owe 2500

I plan on going to our local IRS office next week. The gal at the bank (who did the taxes) told me to ask them if we could be a hardship case. I am hoping so but really not counting on it. They have payment plans but if you don't have the money how is that going to help?

What an awful surprise to get, no wonder you are in shock! I hope that when you check the tax payment out it does turn out to be incorrect and that it's sorted soon. Do hope that tomorrow is a better day for you.

Oh man that sucks rocks! I have never owed but it always scares me that I will.
I got audited once. I was low income then and for whatever reason I got audited. I had all my receipts, everything they wanted. They said have a nice day. I laughed at the expense they went through. If they wanted to do my taxes in the first place why not do them for me??? They would have saved me a couple of hundred dollars. Sigh.

Ask her why you owe first. There has to be an explanation.
When I did taxes it was usually unemployment that caused people to owe. So glad I don't do them anymore and have to tell people that have no money that they owe.

Yup, we owe this year as well...we almost always own a little on state, but typically get back more than enough from the feds to cover it. This year, we owe both state and fed. I'm not a happy camper.

I'm sorry you got bad news from the tax preparer. I agree that you need a second opinion, preferably from the IRS themselves.
About your health plan ... can you not get subsidized health insurance in your state? If you're on such a limited income, you shouldn't have to pay for health insurance. But I don't know how it works in states that don't have an exchange. I really wish they hadn't let individual states opt out. It just hurts people like you and your DD.

Doesn't everyone have to file their taxes every year?
I have been filing since I was 14 years old, my employer gave me a T4 and that was my first year of filing.

I only filed this year because I heard that you have to because of the marketplace insurance. So I did. My credit union files it for me for free.

I have been filing since I was 14 years old, my employer gave me a T4 and that was my first year of filing. Not everyone has to file because not everyone owes or gets a refund. The IRS doesn't care if you don't file and are owed a refund. They aren't going to send a notice or come after you unless you owe. Why you wouldn't file if you were getting a refund is beyond me, but I know some people who weren't much back and didn't want to pay someone to do them. This was before you could e-file on your own. I just looked at that healthcare form you have to file if got insurance from the marketplace and it seems extremely complicated and an easy place to make a mistake.

I just want to get in bed and stay there. Do you have health insurance through Obamacare and do you receive a subsidy? When you applied for your insurance and gave them your income information, was it correct based on what you ended up earning by the end of the year? One tax that is hitting a lot of people..........a lot of people who are not expecting it and can;t afford it................is that their subsidy that they received ended up being too big due to making more income than what they reported that they expected to make. They are having to pay back some of their subsidy. Is there a chance that you are getting hit with this? I hope it turns out to be a mistake.

I'm sorry. That really stinks. I'd definitely have someone else look at them, if possible. I got bad news yesterday on filing taxes, too--someone has already filed a fraudulent tax return using my husband's SSN. Now I have to jump through so many hoops just to be able to file by April 15. I do not understand why the government has to do it this way! I'll be thinking of you and hoping it was a mistake. Good luck!

I do not understand why the government has to do it this way! I'll be thinking of you and hoping it was a mistake. Good luck! The same thing happened to us and the process of filing was actually quite painless. First, call the IRS and let them know what happened-they were able to look up dh' s soc and see the fraudulent return. Next, complete the IRS fraud affidavit and make copies of your dh' s drivers license and soc card. Mail that in with your return. The IRS will tell you that it can take up to six months to get your refund, but we had ours 3 weeks to the day after I dropped the return in the Mail. Since I couldn't e-file my state return (with turbo tax, if you can't e-file federal, you can't e-file state), I included a copy of the IRS affidavit and proof, and wrote a note as to why I was including it. Got that refund one day before the federal.

I don't know if it works this way in the US but, can you retroactively file for the years that you haven't if you were owed a refund?

I don't know if it works this way in the US but, can you retroactively file for the years that you haven't if you were owed a refund? Yes, but only for 3 years after the return was due. Tax day is usually April 15th (this might move a day or two due to a weekend or some other special circumstance). Therefore, if you have not filed 2011 taxes and were due a refund, they have until April 15, 2015 to file or forfeit the refund.

Rainbow, I hope that you are able to get it all sorted out. I have been doing our family taxes for 20 years - even when they are complex. I wish that we lived closer and then I would do yours for you.
It sounds like someone needs to explain how it is that you owe this year - whether there wasn't enough held out from the income you did make or whether it was due to your health insurance subsidy, so that you can make adjustments so that you don't owe again next year (if you indeed do owe this year and it isn't simply an error).

It sounds like maybe the girl at the bank has made a mistake. I saw on the news this morning that if you are going to the tax office, to plan on a long stay. They also showed a special number that you could call to make an appointment. I didn't write it down because we filed in Feb. Is there someone in your family that may be able to just look over your taxes for you and just see if they can understand what is going on? It might be worth it to buy a tax program and try to do them yourself. I use TurboTax and it walks you through step by step. We have used that program for many years and never had a problem. Good luck. I hope that you get it figured out and end up not owing taxes.
