I'm sorry you got bad news from the tax preparer. I agree that you need a second opinion, preferably from the IRS themselves. About your health plan ... can you not get subsidized health insurance in your state? If you're on such a limited income, you shouldn't have to pay for health insurance. But I don't know how it works in states that don't have an exchange. I really wish they hadn't let individual states opt out. It just hurts people like you and your DD. If your state doesn't participate in the ACA then you have limited options... I think Rainbow is in NC like I am and the prices are expensive.

rainbowIF you purchased your insurance through ACA, you should have got a form (Sorry I don't know the name) that you need to do your taxes...a bunch of the ones in NC were incorrect and had to be re-done... double check that you have the correct one. If you think the amount owed is incorrect you can file for an extension and get someone to check them for you. There will be fee for paying late but it won't be much on $500. ETA: I hope your day gets better!

You need to learn how to do your taxes yourself so you can understand the intricacies. Otherwise you will have a thread like this every April.

I'm sorry. That really stinks. I'd definitely have someone else look at them, if possible. I got bad news yesterday on filing taxes, too--someone has already filed a fraudulent tax return using my husband's SSN. Now I have to jump through so many hoops just to be able to file by April 15. I do not understand why the government has to do it this way! I'll be thinking of you and hoping it was a mistake. Good luck! The same thing happened to us and the process of filing was actually quite painless. First, call the IRS and let them know what happened-they were able to look up dh' s soc and see the fraudulent return. Next, complete the IRS fraud affidavit and make copies of your dh' s drivers license and soc card. Mail that in with your return. The IRS will tell you that it can take up to six months to get your refund, but we had ours 3 weeks to the day after I dropped the return in the Mail. Since I couldn't e-file my state return (with turbo tax, if you can't e-file federal, you can't e-file state), I included a copy of the IRS affidavit and proof, and wrote a note as to why I was including it. Got that refund one day before the federal. You got lucky then. Someone filed a fraudulent return under my DHs SSN last year and we are still waiting for them to correct it. We were also owed a refund and are still waiting on that. They just did a news story here about the large number of fraudulent returns this year and how people are lining up outside the IRS office at 3am and still not getting to talk to someone before they close. It's a mess!

I'd check into why you owe. Maybe something got missed.
I almost wrote a check to the state for taxes until I double-checked DH's work. Turns out he missed a line, a step and we actually ended up getting a small refund.

In California, when you sign up through the exchange, if your income is low enough, they put you directly on Medi-Cal (state version of Medicaid) and it doesn't cost you anything for medical care. Is there something similar in every state?

If your income is low enough that you aren't required to file you can go to irs.gov and find a free file option. Get your papers and go through them step by step on a website of your choice. I have used HR Block and Turbo Tax, but I find the HR Block to be easier to use. Complete your taxes and see what they say, you don't have to file them electronically unless you want to. You can go all the way through and then just never submit. HR Block and Turbo Tax have free file options so doing this will cost you nothing. At least then you will be able to see why you owe, though I can't imagine that the person preparing your taxes is unable to explain it to you. That makes me think they shouldn't be preparing taxes.
