We're headed north from Chicago to Northern Michigan. Trying to plan out my days to make hotel reservations ahead of time. What is your opinion on where I should stay? Should I stay in Mackinaw City, Sault Ste. Marie on the Michigan side, or Sault Ste. Marie on the Ontario Canada side? It will be over Memorial weekend. I like the idea of staying in Sault Ste. Marie on the canadian side but I also like the idea of being in a town other than my own over Memorial weekend. Maybe we should stay on the American side since it's a holiday weekend and go over to the Canadian side for the day. What are your thoughts on this? Also, what is not to be missed besides seeing the lock. Thanks.

Even though I'm from Ontario, I'm not really familiar with that particular area. All I can think of is that your money will go much further in Canada! Our dollar is down so low right now that you will gain around 20% if you use American funds. Hope you have a great trip!

From what I remember there is more to do on the Candian side.
I'm confused by your post though, you say Mackinaw City, Sault St. Marie on the US or Candian side. You know that Mackinaw City and Sault St. Marie are about an hour apart?

We want to see the Mackinac bridge, Mackinac Island, and Sault St. Marie. We'll be driving all around doing day trips from our hotel.

If it were me, I would stay in Mackinaw City and take a day trip up to Sault St. Marie instead of the other way around. I think Mackinaw City would be a better "home base". You could also take a day trip to Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point (Shipwreck museum).

I suggest you do some pricing on the hotels. Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island are pretty expensive, probably even more so over Memorial Day. So while it's gorgeous, you might save quite a bundle by staying elsewhere and just visiting.

I'd choose Mackinaw City. If you are there June 5-14 you'll hit the Lilac Festival.

Keep in mind that if you choose Mackinaw City as your 'home base' and do day trips to Tahquamenon, Whitefish Point, Sault Ste Marie, etc you'll have bridge fare x2 each day!
