*** - Original Post - ***
We just received a sweet, handmade gift from a dear friend. We LOVE them and I am so touched! I want to make sure I identify the gift correctly in my thank you note though. I originally thought these were personalized dish towels (the blurring of our last name is my doing) but now I'm wondering if they are napkins (we received a set of eight).
I am also attaching a view of them stacked (still in the gift bag) in case that helps. They are approximately 19 in. x 20 in. each.
*** - Update - ***
I saw the talented gift-giver yesterday and told her I had shared photos of her handiwork with some friends (I resisted the urge to say 1,000 of my closest friends) and told her how we all agreed that it was a beautiful, thoughtful and treasured gift. She then told me that her 21-year-old son caught her completely off guard by requesting an identical SET OF NAPKINS because they were so cool!
Mystery solved!
Thank you again, this thread was fun!

They look like napkins to me ... what a thoughtful gift! Love the colors. I think so too! The set of 8 definitely made me think that. But one of my sisters in law mentioned that she thought if they were napkins they would all match and not be different colors. So I'm rethinking. Again.

Wow that is difficult. I would have first assumed they were towels too but they do have that napkin type fabric. Could you say something like, "thank you for such a thoughtful personalized gift......"?
Does the person that gave them to you have an Etsy store perhaps? You could look up what she/he sells them as.

I am so glad I'm not the only one wondering! LOL She doesn't have an Etsy store unfortunately. She is a business associate that I do NOT want to offend by asking. And a mutual friend told me today that the gift-giver purchased a sewing machine so she could make these for us!

I am getting ready to be no help at all...but my guess is that they are hand towels. Napkins tend to be square, finger tip towels are smaller and hand towels tend to be a bit larger. Also, the personalization seems a bit large for a napkin.
But, I honestly couldn't tell you for sure. LOL

I am thinking hand towels as the monogram is parallel to the corner. Don't napkin monograms usually go at 45 degrees to corner? These would sit on a counter or hang with the monogram facing the user at the correct angle.
Thank you for the thoughtful gift covers it, however.
Eta. Then again, would hand towels be centered?

They are beautiful. My guess is hand towels since the size is not square, and larger than 18"

Instead of wracking my brain trying to figure out what they are, I'd be pondering clever ways to word the thank you note so as to avoid mentioning the words "napkins" and "towels."

I would say they are napkins, because the embroidery is on the corner and because of the colorful border. If they were dishtowels, it would be in the center so you could see it when it was hanging.
It is a very thoughtful gift!

I guess you could say 'linens' and then emphasize the gorgeous embroidery!

So now you need to start another thread with clever ways to word a thank you note lol. I like the previous posters suggestion of 'linens'.

Maybe you could just call them personalized or monogrammed linens. They are very nice.

Definitely personalized linens would work for any of those possibilities!

Like others have said you can say personalized linens. Or, you can talk about how versatile the beautiful personalized linens will be since you can use them for so many purposes like napkins or hand towels.
***ETA I love all the pretty colors! An awesome gift!

An awesome gift! I know you meant well but I would not do this. If she made them thinking you would know exactly what they were she will probably be very offended if it sounds like you don't know WTF to do with them I'd just say linens and say how lovely they are (and they are!). FWIW I think they're napkins do to the embroidery in the corner vs. center.

Are they maybe tea towels? Like, to be used as bread (or other types of) basket liners, etc?

I agree with you, it would be flattering but I think it's one of those things that would have to be said in person, in written form I would immediately read between the lines and think the recipient doesn't know what they are.

They definitely look like napkins because of the weight of the fabric to me. We have a set of multi colored napkins (solid color, not with the borders), so I didn't think twice about them being different colors.

I believe they are napkins, but i would use linens in my thank you to be safe.

I think they're napkins for three reasons: 1) when they're folded as shown, the borders are not symmetrical (I don't think dishtowels, when hung on a towel bar, would have a border on just one side and the bottom); and 2) the assortment of colors, which go together so well, would make a beautiful display on a dinner table; and 3) they're so pretty that I don't think they're meant to be used one at a time, in the kitchen--they're meant to be used as a set.
But if you want to hedge your bets, "personalized linens" works for me, too.

I don't think they are napkins. Every napkin I have ever seen is square - in the fanciest restaurants to the cheapest and every linen one I have bought. Plus surely you'd make napkins all one color and not in a rainbow...unless you know the hostess loves quirky things like all different colors for a table setting.
but to me it wouldn't sense in the center of a dish towel or a hand towel then you are going to be drying the dishes or your hands with the monogram all the time. You want to be drying with the actual fabric part - so having the sewing off to one corner makes more sense to me. ...but then again if she just bought the sewing machine and this is her first set of these she probably hasn't thought out some of the practicalities yet - so it's a bit hard to base it on logic if this is the first time she has made them.
My vote is dish towels or kitchen hand towels.

Those are awesome. My first thought was hand/dish towels..looks like a similar fabric. Hope you can find out for sure. Personally, I would use hand towels more often than napkins. What a great gift!!

I would think dishtowels because of the size. Napkins are squares.

I thought they would be guest towels but looking at the large version of the pic, I really think they're napkins. Linens is a fairly safe word, but she'll still realize you don't know what they are. (And honestly, if I gave a gift like that, I'd SAY what they were! LOL) I would just grit my teeth and thank her for the napkins and pray for the best.
And did you just get married? Congrats!

I found this listing on Etsy which makes me think yours are also cloth napkins. Just from where the monogram is located. I think if they were dish towels they would have the monogramming in the centre. Cloth Napkins
