...I'm not watching the news, but someone earlier said people were looting a CVS, stealing toilet paper?? how does stealing stuff embody hopelessness and anger?? to me, that's just theft.
eta: after reading the post after mine, it's not just theft- it's theft and reckless destruction of property... still don't see how that is a (good way) to show hopelessness. What do they hope to gain by acting like that?? Nothing positive.

Stupid bastards cut one of the fire hoses that the Fire Dept. was using to put out the fire at the CVS the looters just cleaned out. Chunks of concrete being thrown at Police Officers. Setting Police Cars on fire. This is completely disgraceful.
My thoughts are with all the Law Enforcement, Business Owners and the Residents of Baltimore who have to deal with these animals.

crimsoncat05, I don't think they were stealing it so much as spreading it all over the streets outside the CVS... before they set fire to the store.

Typically, I will always come down on the side to support LEO's. If you don't want to be treated like a criminal, don't act like a criminal and things will be fine.
But in the case of Freddie Gray, I would really love to know why he was even a blip on the radar and why the police felt it necessary to try to detain him. I'd love to know his crime because based on what I heard today, it started with Freddie Gray making eye contact with an officer. Last time I checked, making eye contact was not a crime.
Baltimore P.D. needs to address the issue in regards to Mr. Gray and swift action needs to be taken against the officers involved. No one should have their spine severed in police custody.
The Governor should've taken action hours ago and the Baltimore mayor is a lunatic.
God bless those good people in Maryland because it really doesn't seem like there is any competent leadership in the state.

I'd been watching the coverage on that, but I can't figure out if that was enough to cause the whole thing to blow up or if there were other factors. I know they shut down transit and that was a mess (lots of school kids out on the streets), but it seems very abrupt how it all went from rival gangs protesting side by side to stuff's on fire in no time flat.

CNN is right now showing two people with their arms full of stuff coming out of the mall and shoving it all into a white car in the parking lot. If you can zoom in that far, they can zoom even further and get license plate numbers and their faces too. I'd want them to identify and press charges on everyone involved in the looting and rock throwing too. They are hunched over and look like roaches scurrying away. Disgusting.
Curfew is now in effect. 10pm - 5am
We'll see what good that does.

Oh my goodness! Our police in the UK are provided with everything as part of uniform, including Kevlar vests - and full riot gear, shields and vehicles if the situation warrants it.....and their families worry. I cannot imagine how stressed and worried the families of police personnel out there tonight must be.......especially if they are just in regular uniform! My thoughts are with all police personnel out there tonight in the present circumstances, it sounds like a scary place to be. A lot of depts do provide at least uniforms and a vest. Whether it be with a uniform allowance yearly or them buying it for you. Some depts (mostly smaller places) don't unfortunately and you're required to buy it yourself. It's NOT cheap. Some go completely without a vest because they can't afford one. DH is outdated but he wears it out of habit but it won't protect him. I hope your husband doesn't have to go.

They have been organizing and rallying through social media. An actual call for a purge was sent out. It had all the elements required for a perfect storm. Unfortunately I'm not surprised it's spiraled out of control this way.

They are saying that social media has played a part in this. That you can pretty much say what you want and people believe it to be true.

I don't understand why the police who are there just stand around and WATCH the rioters destroy, steal, etc. Why aren't those punks arrested on the spot? Seems to me if they were arrested, it would deter others from doing the same.

Were you all as horrified by the video of the police dragging Mr. Gray's body with his broken spine and when they through him in the back of the van as you are about the looting and protesting? I don't think what's going on is at all right but I didn't see this outrage when the video of Mr. Gray dying with his broken spine was shown.
Interesting.

In one of my police wife groups a lot of the ladies are down that way and their DHs work there. They are all reporting theirs DHs have been hit with bricks, bottles with fire among other stuff. One woman said her DH dept can't afford the proper gear for something like this so he is out there in regular uniform. Talk is going around where my DH works about asking them to volunteer to go down there since we're a little less than 2hrs away. I really am nervous for him to go if that happens. His Kevlar vest is outdated by many years and we can't afford a new one. Wow! Be cautious about dept policies before 'volunteering' I have a close relative who is a first responder ( fire ) and was asked to 'volunteer' to go help and he said yes, was injured. The dept then turned around and refused to pay benefits because he 'volunteered out of jurisdiction and therefore was not on duty. ( though paid so go figure ) If it had been in county they have required reciprocity policies but since it was out of county they claimed they did not have to pay. Long story short he had to go to court for his benefits. Actually it was his employer ( the town ) that sued the fire department ( same town ) because they did not want to pay for it on health insurance. As to the OP It is so horrible what is happening, violence is not going to 'fix' anything. I support peaceful protests ( and participate ) as things HAVE to change. Lives matter. But random violence, looting and arson are not the answer and it will take everyone many steps back from any progress or resolution. It's sad really.

I agree, but regardless of what actions are taken by the Baltimore PD, this rioting is uncalled for. Whether in Ferguson or Baltimore, the way to affect change is not through the burning of police cars and CVS stores. Watching the mayor now, and wow, is she unprepared. She looks completely listless and invokes no confidence whatsoever.

In the current climate police are damned if they do and damned if they don't. They are better letting people do as they want than attempting to enforce the law.

Are you seriously suggesting that our disapproval of rioting means that we support police brutality? I'm assuming you are either an extreme nutcase, lacking critical thinking skills, or just trying to be argumentative. Let me spell it out for you. Police severing spine of anyone (criminal or otherwise): reprehensible. Rioters committing violence in the name of "protest": reprehensible.

I don't understand why the police who are there just stand around and WATCH the rioters destroy, steal, etc. Why aren't those punks arrested on the spot? Seems to me if they were arrested, it would deter others from doing the same. Because arresting someone would incite the crowd. From what I have heard 11 police officers were beaten pretty severely for trying to stop unlawful behaviors. I'm glad the National Guard is showing up. This afternoon the Cripes and Blood gangs joined with Nation of Islam and said they were there to show solidarity and to find police officers. And the amount of kids that are on the streets. The Mayor or the Governor asked that parents keep their kids at home. I'm of Mexican descent, trust me, I know what it is to be stopped just because of what I look like. But I have never been arrested or handled roughly by a police officer because I always acquiesce to what the police are saying. Heck, my brother lives closer to the border here in Texas and he gets stopped on a daily basis. He has never been treated roughly by a police officer. Jennifer

God bless those good people in Maryland because it really doesn't seem like there is any competent leadership in the state. The bolding is mine. That is not true. Obviously if the police always treated people the way they should there would not be victims of police brutality. There are far too many instances of people of color being targeted by the police. There are far too many cases of police violence against people of color, including deaths. I understand the frustration of the victims, their families and those who simply support them. That being said, there is no reason for violence and looting by these people whether they intended to be part of a protest and got swept up in the violence or intended to loot and wreck havoc. I believe if the government had investigated and penalized those in law enforcement who perpetrated these crimes we would not be seeing this now.
