I believe if the government had investigated and penalized those in law enforcement who perpetrated these crimes we would not be seeing this now. Aren't they doing that in this case right now?

I don't understand why the police who are there just stand around and WATCH the rioters destroy, steal, etc. Why aren't those punks arrested on the spot? Seems to me if they were arrested, it would deter others from doing the same. Because arresting someone would incite the crowd. From what I have heard 11 police officers were beaten pretty severely for trying to stop unlawful behaviors. I'm glad the National Guard is showing up. This afternoon the Cripes and Blood gangs joined with Nation of Islam and said they were there to show solidarity and to find police officers. And the amount of kids that are on the streets. The Mayor or the Governor asked that parents keep their kids at home. I'm of Mexican descent, trust me, I know what it is to be stopped just because of what I look like. But I have never been arrested or handled roughly by a police officer because I always acquiesce to what the police are saying. Heck, my brother lives closer to the border here in Texas and he gets stopped on a daily basis. He has never been treated roughly by a police officer. Jennifer Thank you for sharing your experiences Jennifer - me and my ex are Mexican too. He was pulled over and frisked for wearing an Oakland Raiders jacket. It wasn't even his, but it appeared gang related at the time (years ago). He didn't have any issues and was not handled roughly either. He didn't even have his green card on him because he had lost it, but he still wasn't harassed. He was just questioned and we went on our way.

I guess I don't understand what changed today. There have been protests for days in Baltimore and until today the protesting was peaceful. The funeral for Freddie Gray was today.
Typically, I will always come down on the side to support LEO's. If you don't want to be treated like a criminal, don't act like a criminal and things will be fine.

Baltimore P.D. needs to address the issue in regards to Mr. Gray and swift action needs to be taken against the officers involved. No one should have their spine severed in police custody.
The Governor should've taken action hours ago and the Baltimore mayor is a lunatic.
God bless those good people in Maryland because it really doesn't seem like there is any competent leadership in the state. My limited understanding is that he had a rap sheet a mile long and was well known by the cops in his area. His eye contact was immediately followed by running. Given his history and sudden need to bolt, the police assumed he was up to no good.
Again, my limited understanding. I read this in two different places and reserve the right to be totally incorrect.

Oh God! She just said "Beetlejuice"!!! The mayor of Baltimore just said anyone who wants to come to help calm things down should come...she uttered Al Sharpton's name! Jeez! Al Sharpton is/was calming??? Where, when? ( seriously not as snarkily as that sounds ) I've only witnessed him fanning the flames. Twice in person. I'll readily admit that I avoid him if possible because of the things I've personally seen him do, and the lives he's damaged. So I might have missed his calming actions, I'm seriously curious as to what he did that calmed a situation. Maybe he's changed.

I was being extremely sarcastic and wondering why on earth she would say such a thing. As someone mentioned above, the mayor was terribly unprepared to speak and doesn't give me warm, fuzzy feelings of confidence in her abilities to "manage" the situation.

My husband is from El Salvador and grew up in L.A. So, we're both very well acquainted with gangs, thugs, bad cops and good cops. It's a tough job, tough life. We both had to get out of the areas we grew up in to escape.

There are photo's of all those "out of towner's" causing violence, looting and running out of the CVS with toilet paper. Enough of this bullshit. The dumbass Governor should have called in the National Guard hours ago. The governor can't do that until the mayor requests it. He is not a dumbass. He's doing his job. Ugh. This very thread is indicative of nonsense in our country today: let emotions rule every thing we say and do instead of allowing some common sense prevail. The mayor looks listless? Wouldn't you be if your town was imploding and it's likely you've hadn't slept in days? The governor is a dumbass because he didn't come charging in with NG uninvited? Good grief people. Get a grip. And this thuggery going on in Baltimore today has nothing to do with Freddie Gray. This is the chance the thugs, the gang bangers and the criminal element have been waiting for. They know the police won't fight back because it would been viewed negatively. These are the same people of Baltimore who watch their children and others get slaughtered on the streets of Baltimore almost daily. There is no outrage then. Why? Because they're the ones doing the shooting and stabbing. Justice for Freddie Gray will occur. I believe that. But we will never see the justice done to many those you see tearing up the streets of Baltimore tonight or many other nights through the year.

Really moving it is really something and I hope they are successful I just saw that it was really moving the crowd was getting bigger in a good sense so i hope that was good thing in that sense as well, I remember the band they had tried to make to protect the officers in Fergeson as well. There is good in this as well too. but I love to hear the singing I wish they would have kept showing that instead of the other stuff. Dh said one of the moms caught her son on CNN ha ha I wondered if that would happen! I wouldn't want to be that kid!

Perhaps in this case but there are many that are either not investigated or are investigated by the same police department accused of the crimes.

Then why not protest those? Why protest one where they're doing what they're supposed to and exactly what you'd want them to do?

In one of my police wife groups a lot of the ladies are down that way and their DHs work there. They are all reporting theirs DHs have been hit with bricks, bottles with fire among other stuff. One woman said her DH dept can't afford the proper gear for something like this so he is out there in regular uniform. Talk is going around where my DH works about asking them to volunteer to go down there since we're a little less than 2hrs away. I really am nervous for him to go if that happens. His Kevlar vest is outdated by many years and we can't afford a new one. How much is a new vest? That at is one Go Fund Me I could get behind.

I honestly would not call those people "protesters". Rioters, looters, sure. But not protestors. I don't believe that all the people there are breaking the law. Generalizations like that strike me as racist. b I'm sure that they aren't all breaking the law, but the footage is right there on TV. A lot of them are. Two wrongs don't make a right. This looks to be spinning out of control, and it's bad news. The death of Mr. Gray, while suspicious and tragic, should not be a license to destroy property, injure others, and help themselves to free stuff.

I'm not sure if that includes having someone come out and size/measure you because they have to do that as well. I know 1k may not sound like a lot to some but it is for us at the moment. Good news is were expecting some job news anytime now if it's happens like were hoping for he will be issued a new one. *please keep your fingers crossed for us!* There are some organizations that buy and donate vest (none in our county though) because so many officers aren't provided with a vest. I don't have the link anymore but if you google you will find some of these organizations they do take donations. They even provide vest for K9 dogs❤️

If that's true then they should have done their job and taken him into custody without murdering him.

I have several friends who live and work in Baltimore as well as former students. I'm very worried for Baltimore.

hop2 Thanks for mentioning what you did about the volunteering part of my post. I hadn't even thought about what you said. Thank You. No problem, who would think that if your asked/ requested to go ( and paid ) there would be an issue. My relative works full time for the town in another capacity ( medium sized town, volunteer fire dept w paid chief and drivers ) and part time as a paid fire Chief ( seperate budgets as the fire dept is subsidized ) so the town essentially took their own fire dept to court. Life is crazy sometimes.
