The police are using restraint. I believe there is a fine line between controlling the situation and making it worse. I think if the police go in there and tase and arrest everyone ithe situation would escalate and there would be trouble all over the country.
It's a terrible situation. The trouble makers are doing nothing to help the situation. The news is showing citizens trying to call for calm. I believe most people just want their voice to be heard.
The beauty of this board is that we see no color when we talk to each other (unless you have a pic or say) but I as a Caucasian have no concept of what other races go through on a regular basis. My friends have shared their experiences but I don't live it. We see the world from our own perspective and sometimes need to try to see things from another perspective.
There are the criminals causing problems but there are things that need to change.
I lived the la riots. My workplace was attacked. The day after the riots went through downtown la we were escorted by armed national guard to our offices. I personally know innocent people who were injured.

My authentic self? Really? Just so I know, what exactly is that? Because if I'm not sure how much more real my post could've been, I'm sure you can educate me, seeing how much you know about me from approximately a thousand random message board posts. So what's your idea on how to handle lawless people? Should we hand out lollipops in a caring manner? Say pretty please? Ridiculous. Go back to all my posts and quote where I've said lollipops should be handed out to the rioters and looters. Don't try and deflect. If you don't want to discuss what I've actually posted then don't. I asked you a point blank question TWICE as to how you would deal with lawless people. You've ignored me twice. I provided a few polite suggestions..you know, more caring ones since you care so much. Deflect on that for awhile. My conversation with you is over and was a complete waste of my time. Is that authentic enough for you?

I'm about 15 mins away from where all this is going down. It's tragic and just senseless. People who are doing this don't care about Frwddy Gray, they are lawless thugs. They don't care about statistics that show that more white people have died in police custody than black people. They don't care about hurting anyone..they just want to act like animals. Lock em up, tear gas them, tase them, I don't care. Is it a flawless system..no. But there are laws to protect people and they need to be followed..on both ends. Why the curfew is not tonight, I don't know. Half a block is burning. Our mayor is a complete moron telling police to stand down and let them destroy. I'm praying for our city tonight but part of me never wants to set foot in it again..I'm just disgusted. Medved said that police kill more whites than blacks. In absolute terms, that is accurate. However, the statement ignores that there are more than five times more whites than blacks in America. When comparing death rates, blacks are about three times more likely than whites to die in a confrontation with police. Talk show host: Police kill more whites than blacks

I'm not "scooting" or whatever that is. Do you even know what happened that started all this? A man named Freddie Gray had his spine severed while in police custody and it wasn't the first time that someone was hurt or murdered by the Baltimore police. This fact is getting put aside while everyone focuses on the riots. Don't you understand that? Do you care at all?

So what do you suggest they do? The city government has begged for peace, the local ministries have begged for peace. A councilman yelled at them to go home. The whole nation is seeing how effective that was. I care about people being treated like human, but these rioters aren't showing any concern for their fellow humans, so can you really blame the innocent in the area who are fearing these rioters for not caring how the authorities regain control? I don't profess to be all knowing like some peas. I'm not a riot expert. Nothing I've said in this thread should have lead anyone to believe I am okay with the fact that people are rioting and looting. I used very pointed and clear wording and shared my views on the killing of black men at the hands of police. Thank you for not allowing the riots or the people here to forget why this is happening. The police murdered Freddie Gray and they need to held responsible for that. Now.

That fact has been put aside by the rioters, the arsonists and thieves rampaging on Freddie Gray's behalf. Do you understand that? Everyone has agreed, from what I've read here and in the media that Freddie Gray is a victim of police brutality. They are investigating, no one is sweeping this under the carpet. There was no reason to burn Baltimore in the name of justice.

I'm pretty sure that murdering a suspect while in custody is also a felony, no? Putting the fool in foolana, are we? I already spelled it out for you once, but you conveniently ignored my post. Murder, committed by police: Felony Murder, committed by criminals: Felony The looting, rioting, arson and assault being committed tonight: Should be a felony What do you not understand about two wrongs don't make a right? You are SO witty making fun of my user name! What about the murder of a man in police custody with no charges being filed is what began the protests and then the riots? I don't agree with the riots at all but can you comprehend that none of this would have happened if not for the actions of those police?

I've heard a lot of nasty talk about thugs and a lack of understanding about how and why we got to this terrible night.
Do YOU understand THAT?

I'm confused with the statement above. No one that I have seen on this thread or that I have seen on any news coverage, has given those responsible for the death of Mr Gray a pass for their crimes. I think everyone wants this properly investigated and those responsible prosecuted. Those rioting and setting fires in Baltimore are thugs - they are certainly not doing any of these crimes in support of Freddie Gray and his family, the latter having expressed their sadness at the turn of events since they specifically asked that there be no protests or demonstrations on the day they put their loved one to rest. These people don't care at all about Mr. Gray, they are just taking advantage of the situation. Perhaps I am just naive though, as I have never had a colour associated with the term "thug". I just always thought the word described anyone who breaks the law and inflicts harm and chaos on those around them. Since I laugh every time I get called a "union thug" by some of the redneck nutters in my area any time I'm ever quoted in the paper about a faculty union issue, I, too, have never considered "thug" to have a racial connotation. If I were any more white, I would glow in the dark. Why is it that some on this thread believe that we cannot condemn looting and rioting by opportunistic criminals unless we are condoning incidents of police brutality? I have no problem saying that what happened in Baltimore needs to be thoroughly investigated and IF evidence of police brutality is found, the police should be charged. I also believe that those using "racial outrage" as an excuse to destroy and loot should also be charged and locked up. The vague excuses that people wouldn't be acting like this if they had any recourse . . . . Yeah, no. "I'm pissed off at police brutality, so I'm going to rob this store and then burn it down" makes NO sense. No amount of rationalization can legitimize such behavior.

I've been following the news, absolutely scary! By the time I visited this message board, the page was 7 pages.
I don't have time to read it all, but I want Baltimore Refupees to know that I am sending them my best, most peaceful wishes. Stay safe!
I'll never understand the "I'm mad at (some legal decision) (some incident with authority) (some accident) so I'll take it out on my community" mindset. And the violence is so often perpetrated by gangs, and individuals who are not directly involved, who just want the anarchy that instigates the violence.
My wishes for safety and peace for all involved.

I care about the safety of those in the area and I care about the property damage. the people being affected by these riots are now the priority. The rioters took that away from Gray. And if you, or they, think for one minute that rioting is going to change a damn thing, you are misguided. It turns the sympathy away from the victim and turns anger and blame toward the rioters and by extention the race of those rioting. It doesn't help. It hurts.

I'm just in shock watching this all unfold on tv. I turned it off for a few hours and now I see the National Guard, fires and continued looting. I feel like I'm watching a third world country; not the U.S. This is so sad and horrible. I feel so sorry for Mr. Grey and his family and I can't stand police brutality of any kind, but to ruin your hometown under the guise of making a statement over such death, is nonsensical and sickening. Prayers to everyone in the midst of this.

It was more of an observation about your user name. And yes, I can comprehend that if Freddie Grey hadn't been killed, this wouldn't have happened tonight. I don't know why that means that I shouldn't be outraged at the rioters. Again, two wrongs don't make a right. Apparently that is too complicated for you to understand.

The point being is these thugs and what they're doing is a waste to resources. It was more of a statement in response to the idea that everyone that doesn't like what is going on today must have forgotten what started this in the first place.

Do you think the Baltimore Police Department should be tasked with figuring out what happened to Gray? The Department of Justice of the USA is not authoritative enough for you? No, the Baltimore Police Dept should NOT be tasked with figuring out what happend to Mr. Gray. It should and is being investigated by a separate entity so there can be no accusations of "cover-up" -- unless, of course you think the DOJ isn't authentic enough?

Many of us understand that unless you have all the facts you can't be sure that you're making a proper judgement. (in any given situation, be it someone parked in handicapped spot that doesn't looked handicapped, to judging what someone purchase on and EBT card, or a police brutality case being investigated) That was driven home in the Michael Brown case as it turned out that he was actually a thug that threatened a police officer's life, after he had robbed a convenience store. In that case you should be sad for Darren Wilson having his life ruined for doing nothing more than his job and defending his life.

Indicative of how senseless the riots are is the burning of a brand new senior center built by the baptist church. There are parishioners out there praying and crying. My brother is law is an MD state trooper and is on his way there. My thoughts and prayers are with him and all those responding trying to protect the city. Your BIL will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Because you seem intent, throughout this whole thread, to simply hone in on the circumstances of Mr. Gray's death, which everyone here has agreed was criminally wrong, and somewhat dismiss the fact that a faction of violent thugs are determined to destroy as much of the city as they can, using Mr. Gray's death as an excuse. People aren't condoning what happened to Mr. Gray; they're condemning the criminal behavior of the thugs. And, no, of course the investigation won't set Mr. Gray's loved ones world back on axis; by the same token, destroying the city won't bring him back either.
