Years ago I went to an estate sale and bought an old plastic box full of colorful buttons in medium and large sizes. I think I paid $3.00 for the box and I bought it more for the interesting box than the buttons. when I took out the buttons they smelled awful. I tried to wash out the smell but that didn't work. When I researched why they smelled, i found out the buttons were actually Bakelite buttons! I've never used any of the buttons in a project and just keep them in the clear (now slightly yellow) box the came in.

Oh those are lovely! The purple ones are great, hardly see those! I am always on hunt for buttons at our area flea markets. I really love it when there is a little treasure mixed in with the bags or jars. I've gotten stamps, tiny old photos, coins and so on.

What a fun find, congrats! I love second hand purchases and hand me downs, they are like finding hidden little treasures.

Great find, especially with all the colors! My neighbor moved away and she was border line hoarder..but she had to downsize big time.. sad story.... but she gave me this HUGE bag of buttons, one of those gallon size Ziplock bags.. full of them.. most of them are the little white'ish clear ones. Not sure what I am going to do with all those but it was fun to go through and pick out the unique ones. If you have mostly white, and prefer colours, you can actually use Rit to dye them whatever colour you like. Just a thought.

Awesome! My MIL was having a garage sale recently, and she had a few bags of buttons ready to go, so I said I'd buy them from her. She gave them to me, saying that they had been her mother's. her mom worked in a dress factory and was allowed to bring home extra buttons. Then she went upstairs and came back with a huge basket full of buttons! I filled 2 jars so far and haven't even put a dent into this button basket. i need to dig out some more jars. This post is useless without pictures!

I forgot all about this thread. Many of the buttons are just basic solid colors, which I definitely use, but there are some fun ones mixed in here and there, too. I love the nautical one and the ones with 2 different bands of color, for instance. The amount in the basket looks so little, until you break open those bags. I could only fit about 2 1/2 bags in the green-lidded jar.

I see a clear button in that pic. I like those because I punch out a circle of patterned paper and adhere it to the underneath of the button. It looks pretty neat.

How lucky! They are really pretty buttons. I just sorted out my sewing cabinet and found a tin full of assorted buttons. I must have gone through a stage of matching buttons to the dress I was making because I found lots of little fabric coloured ones. The dresses are long gone but the buttons brought back memories. I am another who loves buttons, buys buttons but forgets to use them. In fact, I just checked in a drawer and found my treasured collection of MM buttons - beautiful matte colours and flat, perfect for scrapbooking pages. I bought them when I first started scrapbooking and (shhhh, don't tell!) they cost about $60. It was my birthday and I got a small discount. I love them and am now going to put them in a jar on my desk so I can remember to use them.
