It used to be 'YOU KNOW', but I think 'I MEAN' is now the more frequent phrase people use. Just a peeve. Even actors who are speaking from a script do it (Jared Paladecki I love you, but cut it out!)

I notice things like that the most when sports reporters are interviewing athletes after a game. It's a constant stream of "um", "er", "you know" and "I mean". I don't think it bothers me nearly as much in regular face-to-face conversation, and I'm probably guilty of doing it myself.

I don't hear I Mean as much as You Know but my SIL says You Know a million times during every conversation! I hate it with a purple passion. I think it makes him sound ignorant

It drives me bananas. I've noticed it recently in sports. The reporter will ask a question and the first thing the athlete says is "I mean, it was ....." I mean should come after the first sentence ONLY IF their explanation was confusing. Right?

I work with teenagers. This is a constant occurrence. I'm pretty sure that if you are saying something, that's what you mean. If you have to qualify your comments so often with "I mean," you probably should work on your communication skills.
Another pet peeve - starting a comment with "Wait." Students cannot simply raise their hand and ask a question. They must say "Wait!" raise their hand and then ask. "Wait" starts more sentences than "I," "the" and even "but."

I mean, why does this bug you? You know, it's just a phrase when you know, you don't know what to say. I mean, really, get over yourself. It's epic.

Note to self, pay attention to what you are saying when you talk to people.
I mean I just might use those words myself, you know.

Totally and completely off topic: Trixie Bender (or the alternative Trixie Benderover) is my stripper name. (In my bookclub, we all have our alternate universe names)

You know it's bad when students try and put their filler phrases into their writing. I see "I mean," "you know," and, my personal favorite way to start a sentence in an essay, "Well." I told a girl to not start a sentence that way the other day and she was quite surprised that it wasn't ok.

I have a friend who regularly adds in both of these to every sentence, do you know what I mean? Yes, I know what you mean, I am a fairly intelligent woman and you are not talking about rocket science!

How about " you feel me" and "you know what I'm saying". Drives me nuts, although some times it's not a far drive. .

Weird. I've actually never heard "I mean" as a filler. "Like" and "you know" are rampant, though.

When did "I hear you" morph into "I feel you."? I just don't think it's the same.

The other night I overheard a conversation in which a young man (college age) said the word "like" in one sentence at least 12 times.

What are your feelings on "Just sayin'"? I mean, I know some people who use that in their speech literally all the time. Not me, you know, but others. Just sayin'.

My pet peeve is people who don't ever shut up. You know, the constant jabberers. The ones who have to broadcast every thought, question, or whatever other minutiae that scrolls through their brain.
