I've been sick and dealing with some health stuff lately, but just had to make a quick mom brag, since I am so incredibly proud of my son today. Tomorrow he graduates from summa cum laude. He started off at , and left there with a 4.0 when he changed his major to a more liberal arts oriented degree, and just didn't have an equivalent program. We much prefer as a school, but as that was the biggest disappointment in his university education so far, I'll take it! He has also done work-study at the Federal Repository in the University library for the three years that he has attended . He also just got notified that he was awarded an International Fulbright Teaching Assistant-ship, and so he will be going to in late July or early August (not many details yet) and staying for at least 1 year. He's talking about staying longer to get more experience with his Mandarin in. This is a kid who started out his school career with some pretty big difficulties ( ), but persevered, worked his tail off, and totally turned things around by 4th grade. He's been an academic overachiever ever since. This is also a kid who has a . I'm just so incredibly proud of him and all he has accomplished so far, and couldn't resist the temptation to brag on him a bit.

Thanks for indulging me, everyone! akathy , he did a dual major in . Makes my head spin! I tease him that he's like a female Rory Gilmore. If anyone remembers when she went down to Florida for Spring Break and her and Paris were watching the Joseph Campbell Power of Myth Series on videotape, I was LMAO, because that is totally something he would do. DS discovered Joseph Campbell in high school and went all out intense on reading his books, etc. I was recently giving him a hard time when he took a bunch of old VHS tapes with this kind of stuff that one of his retiring professors was offering up. He's an old soul for sure. He started out at as a major. He is a true outdoors-man and loves hiking, camping, etc. (no hunting, though. He's more of a John Muir type). He had been wavering between and when he was heading off to college. I had hoped he would stick with the , because I thought his job prospects would be much better long-term-especially back home in He ended up switching to the after 1 year at , and he seems to love it. So I'm happy that he's happy.

I've been sick and dealing with some health stuff lately, but just had to make a quick mom brag, since I am so incredibly proud of my son today. Tomorrow he graduates from the University of South Carolina summa cum laude. He started off at Clemson, and left there with a 4.0 when he changed his major to a more liberal arts oriented degree, and Clemson just didn't have an equivalent program. We much prefer Clemson as a school, but as that was the biggest disappointment in his university education so far, I'll take it! He has also done work-study at the Federal Repository in the University library for the three years that he has attended USC. He also just got notified that he was awarded an International Fulbright Teaching Assistant-ship, and so he will be going to Taiwan in late July or early August (not many details yet) and staying for at least 1 year. He's talking about staying longer to get more experience with his Mandarin in. This is a kid who started out his school career with some pretty big difficulties (reading and writing problems due to SPD), but persevered, worked his tail off, and totally turned things around by 4th grade. He's been an academic overachiever ever since. This is also a kid who has a POS bio father who never paid a dime in child support and hasn't even attempted to contact him or his sister since they were 4. We have made it through some extremely tough emotional times and even tougher lean financial times. Of course, current DH gets a huge portion of the credit as he has been an amazing father to them, and truly loves them like his own since we got married when DS was 8. I'm just so incredibly proud of him and all he has accomplished so far, and couldn't resist the temptation to brag on him a bit. How amazingly awesome! Great job, mom!

Wow what a shift and I bet it makes for interesting convo. Forestry to Mandarin! Congrats to both of you. It totally does! I remarked on the crazy opposite-ness of his choices while he was still debating majors his senior year of high school. My uncle said the exact same thing when we saw him recently. He gets this look quite often: Thank you for the congrats

How lovely! Well done, mom! Kinda makes the struggles worth it, doesn't it? It really, really does. I had quite a weepy spell earlier tonight when I thought back to some of his early struggles, and the nights he (and I) would cry over how difficult it was for him . . . and his letter to J.K. Rowling when he was in upper elementary along with her response, his later academic honors, high school graduation, etc. Times like this are a sweet, sweet victory for sure.

What? Clemson to USC? Tiger to a Gamecock? They're natural enemies. Kidding. That's fantastic for your son, congratulations! My daughter just finished her junior year at USC and I love that campus.. but man, it's a sauna in the summer!

He struggled with it for sure, and he's (understandably) not very vocal about it around school, but he's still a at heart. He has had some wonderful mentors at though. His boss at the library has been absolutely amazing. Completely agree about the summers. They are long (so long!) and brutal. The humidity ranks right up there with sometimes.
