I prefer an app or even Google maps. We have a couple of stand-alone GPS units, but IME, the apps and Google maps are usually more up to date than the Garmin, et.al. So those only get used for back up. Unless you're willing to constantly shell out hefty fees for mediocre updates with the stand alones.
A couple of years ago, we did an experiment when the whole family had to drive into Cincinnati for an emergency. The newest Garmin with the newest map update got us lost way more than our phones, or even the way old and hardly ever updated Garmin. It still seems beyond kooky, and I probably wouldn't believe it if I hadn't witnessed and experienced it. That was really what changed my mind on using the phone for GPS. I was in the car that kept getting lost, and it was more stress in an already stressful situation.
The screens on our Garmins are no larger than our iphone 4s screens, but YMMV I guess, depending on the model.

Google maps here. I like that you can toggle traffic off and on, helpful when you hit heavy traffic.

When I use Navigation, I always plug in my phone. No dead batteries that way! That would probably be a good idea ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg)

Dh and I share a Tmobile plan with unlimited phone, text, and data.
We got rid of our TomTom a long time ago and don't miss it.
The up to date traffic info really comes in handy since we live in RDU, which has worse traffic jams than Chicago did.
I'm going to try Waze. I don't use navigation on my phone unless I'm out with my mom, but the app I have doesn't work well.
Siri has also come in handy, since sometimes we only need a street address to figure out where we need to go. I use her to tell me the closest restaurants or shops to me.
The thing I love the most about my phone is using my thumb print to unlock it. Genius.
