*****update 5/20/15*****
My new bed was delivered and set up last night. I haven't slept this well in years and it's just the first night. I am so glad I spent the extra for the great matteress and the adjustable base! Thank you all for your input, it really helped out a lot!
Hello Pea-verse!
I am going to be buying a new bed in the next week or so and I really want one of the adjustable ones that lifts the head and knees, etc. I also want gel based memory foam (because hot flashes).
Does anyone here have one that they love? How about had one but hated it? I will test-lay on many beds, but having a running start of what to avoid or go for would help.
Thanks!

We have one, which I frankly do not find all that comfortable, but my DH loves it. Ours was from Costco a few years back -- two twin beds that fit together inside a frame to be a King. My parents stayed over once and used our room-- my mom found the bed to be uncomfortably high for her to get into it -- she needed a boost to get up, and she's not unusually short -- like 5'5". There's no way to lower the bed, so I would say that height is a key piece to be sure you are ok with.
With the adjustable features -- not sure if all beds have it, but you may want to be sure that it will go to flat with batter back up -- if you have power outages it would suck to have the bed stuck in knee lift or some odd configuration.

We bought a Sleep Number bed last October. I can sleep on almost anything so I didn't really care what we bought. My husband wanted the Sleep Number and the salesman had me at "anti-snoring bed." My husband snores like you wouldn't believe. He's comfortable, but I don't find it any more comfortable than a regular mattress. It is nice to be able to raise our heads when watching TV or reading. I don't raise the feet often because I'm a side sleeper with fake knees so it isn't comfortable to have them bent funny on my side. As for "anti-snoring" - I'm still on the couch every night within a couple of hours due to his snoring. Frankly, I think it was a waste of $8,000 - my husband would say otherwise.

I have the Tempurpedic. You can get whatever mattress you want, it's the base that raises and lowers. Dh and I love ours. It really does help with dh's snoring, and I can lift my legs and recline during the day, raise the head of my bed when I'm hurting too badly to lie down relatively flat.
Before this bed, I was sleeping on a ton of pillows because lying down completely flat was too painful for my pancreatitis. Now I can sleep reclined, put me feet up or down, and adjust the bed for sleeping on my side or back.
I like the tempurpedic material because it's so soft yet supportive to my joints.
I have a latex allergy, so I was really restricted on what mattress I could buy. We have the regular tempurpedic, but it isn't very hot. I have the night sweats anyway. I sleep with a lightweight down comforter, and we keep our room at 68. I sleep so much better than I used to sleep.
My doctors recommended that I take naps and sleep as much as I can since your body heals in your sleep. I've actually had some nerve regeneration, which is excellent news.
I have a lot of insomnia because of my illness and pain, but I do sleep when I can. This bed has really made a difference.

I have the Serta I-series gel based foam mattress. It definitely keeps me cooler than a Tempurpedic, but it doesn't spring back the way that the Temp does. So I constantly feel an indent in the mattress and we have to rotate it once a month..you can't flip it. It's a this of the cost of the Temp but DH and I both aren't in love with it

We just got a Serta adjustable bed about a month ago.
Ours is a few inches higher than our old regular mattress, but not terribly high - and the base came with two sets of legs - different heights so it could be lower if we wanted (although the bed skirt we already had would be too long to use if we used the shorter legs). Ours has a cushy top on it, which is nice, but the bed is firm underneath that.
We tested a lot of beds. We very quickly rejected the Tempurpedic ones. Neither of us liked the way they sink down under you and don't come back up quickly. We just didn't like them a lot.
Our bed is one mattress. I think all the ones on the display floor were, and the salesman said almost everybody who gets the split ones ends up disliking them. Most people don't like the "ridge" in the middle that you get with two separate mattresses.
Ours hasn't solved the snoring issue, but it wasn't presented to us that it would. It does take some strain off our backs when the head is raised even a little. It's much nicer to watch TV or read in bed with the adjustable feature. We've been experimenting with different angles for sleeping and usually have the head raised at least a little.
When we went looking for beds, I very quickly realized I liked the adjustable beds more than I thought I would. It made lying on a totally flat bed feel weird. It cost a chunk more to get the adjustable features but so far I think it was worth it.

I can't help on the gel mattress you are talking about but I had the exact opposite experience with our sleep number than what Idahomom had. I have an i8 series sleep number that is a split king with an adjustable base. I really like the mattress. I like that I can adjust my side and DH can adjust his side for how firm we want them. What I LOVE is the adjustable base. It has stopped DH's snoring! What I have a hard time with now is when we are at the lake house, a hotel or someone else's house and I have to deal with the snoring again. I like the adjustable base for me too because I like my head raised some. I tend to sleep on my sdie a lot so I don't raise the foot of the bed all the time but every now and then, it comes in handy too, especially if I am having back pain and trying to get comfortable.

We have an adjustable bed (although not a gel mattress) and if it flew away in a tornado tomorrow, we would run out and throw money at any store that could get another one delivered to us by that night. We love it that much. My only regret is that ours is a King with a regular King mattress rather than a split (the base is split, but the mattress is not). We got it on sale as a floor model and if I were to do it again, I would get a split mattress too.
Look for floor model sales - I believe ours is a Tempurpedic and it was under $2,000 for the base and the mattress. Ours does sit high, but not because of the bed itself - we put it inside another headboard/footboard frame and modified it to fit but it had to be raised up quite a bit. At some point, we will probably have to rethink that because we are both short and it's ridiculously high.

We have the Sleep Number I10 split king adjustable. I do like the adjustable aspect. The split king is basically just two twin beds pushed next to each other so that is so-so. We use a king size top sheet and blanket so we are still sort of together! I HATE the sleep number bed. I am in pain every.single.day. from sleeping on it. DH hated our off-brand Temperpedic so we got this sleep number bed and now I hate it. We can't win.

I love love LOVE my sleep number bed. I got the adjustable frame and that's part of what I love, I think. I just ridiculously love it. Doesn't help with any snoring though

Thanks everyone for your input. I have bad knees and snore. Laying on my back is painful, and I like to sit/recline in bed and read, etc. Your input has almost sold me on the adjustable bed. I'll try to remember to update with what I buy and how much I like it. Going bed shopping tonight. Luckly, it's just me and I only want a full. I have no plans at all to invite anyone home to share by bed. LOL! So the split mattress or not isn't a worry.

I would like an adjustable bed to help with reflux and also headaches. But would I have to give up my sleigh bed? I don't think an adjustable base would fit, would it? I love my pretty bedroom furniture.

I love my pretty bedroom furniture. When I bought mine, I think they told me it will fit in pretty much any bed. I would go to a store and ask a salesman that knows about them. Or you might be able to call a sleep number store and tell them you are interested in a bed with adjustable base. You don't have to really buy from them but they should be able to fill you in over the phone regarding what the adjustable base will fit and what won't fit.

Since you bought a split king, why don't you buy yourself a twin mattress that you like and replace the sleep number mattress on your side? Then you can both have what you like.

We have been looking for one but cannot find one that is as thick as the Sleep Number mattress. Its bad enough to have the split in between, I didn't want a drop down too!

You probably won't have to give up your sleigh bed! our adjustable bed is on a metal frame that just sits right inside the wood bed frame that matches the bedroom set!

We bought a Sleep Science one at Costco last Christmas. Its just regular memory foam, not the gel kind. But I would highly recommend it. We tested out the Temperpedic, and I was a bit leary of ordering online from Costco on a bed I had not tested out, but it was less than half the price of Tempurpedic and I have no regrets.

My parents bought two king adjustable beds, one to have at each sister's home. When she moved back here a few weeks ago, she brought one side of the king to set up in my dining room since her good queen bed here is being used by my niece and her daughter.
She told me it and the other side are mine when she passes away. I'm unable to sleep without sitting up a bit due to my spinal pain. I've trained myself to sleep on these special support pillows from Relax The Back that put you in the same position as an adjustable bed would do.
Mom loves hers and the times I've used it were so comfortable for me. Her mattress is like a temporpedic, but isn't that brand. It came with the frame setup.

Another thought...............what about trying to find one of the bed toppers that people use and put it under the new mattress. That would lift you up. You would need to find one that has the right amount of thickness.

I have a sleep number adjustable bed. I could live without the sleep number part… But I love the adjustment part! I'm just like one of those old ladies in the Craftmatic adjustable bed commercials!
