Question about drinking water...

My nephrologist told me that I need to be drinking 100 oz. of water per day, in order to avoid more kidney stones. Unfortunately, I don't come anywhere near that, no matter how hard I try.

ETA: I weigh between 125-130 lbs.

I think it would have a lot to do with how much you weigh, exercise, overall health, etc.. 6-8 glasses a day is recommended and easy to remember. I would say if a doctor recommends more or less then go with that. Honestly, I can't drink that much. I have a 16oz. turvis cup that I sip water out of. I like it ice cold so once the ice has melted I either add more ice or get fresh water and ice.

I don't get anywhere near that amount of water, but if you add in coffee and tea I am golden. 

I had always heard that it isn't always about water exactly, but as long as you are getting the appropriate amount of liquid that isn't coke-colas you are okay.

I think it's all about moderation. I drink well over a gallon of water a day--it's the only thing I drink. But I'm not chugging a gallon in one sitting.

My kidneys are in absolutely amazing shape.

I've always been told half your body weight (in lbs) in water (in ounces) plus 8 ounces for every 30 minutes of vigorous exercise. This is for a healthy person.

I find it strange that your doctor would be concerned about a slight overage of water (12 oz.) hurting your kidneys. Did she ask about how much protein (esp animal protein) you were eating? Digesting protein also works your kidneys. Perhaps you should see a nutritionist.

I have no idea how much 90 oz or 72 oz is. I've always been told to drink 8 glasses per day, which would be 2 litres. 

ETA: According to on-line conversion:
90 oz = 2.66 litres
72 oz = 2.1 litres

I wouldn't have throught that 90 oz was over-the-top. 

The guideline is usually  1.6 litres but no more than 2 litres of fluid for an average weight woman (140/150 pounds) over here which is about 56 to 70 fluid oz. Obviously that has to be adjusted if you are doing strenuous exercise or the weather is particularly hot.
Drinking too much water on top of the other fluid that you absorb from the rest of your diet can be dangerous as gar mentioned in an earlier post.

We wouldn't force ourselves to over-eat, I don't get why some are convinced you should force yourself to over-drink.

The weight loss world seems to think that drinking a lot of water will help them burn fat. It is true that you need water to burn fat, however, having an excess of water around is not going to help you burn more fat then your calorie consumption level / energy burning level dictates.

The concept of 'flushing out toxins' is super trendy right now. However, that is something your body does naturally with its waste products. There aren't really 'toxins' like some marking campaigns want you to believe. By consuming excess water you are not 'flushing out toxins.'

Constantly consuming excess water puts your body's cells in a hypotonic environment, causes electrolyte imbalance, and causes your brain to swell. None of this is healthy and can lead to death in extreme cases.

I am horrible about getting my water in.  But if you include coffee and crystal light, I'm golden!

I don't force myself to drink water, but water is 99.9% of what I drink. So on a hot summer day I may drink much more than a freezing cold winter day. I don't really think about if I am drinking too much.

Wow! It's all I can do to drink one bottle of water a day, I can't imagine 10. I know I should drink more water but I'd be living in the bathroom if I drank that many!

I don't force myself to drink a gallon a day. It is a rough estimate. I don't drink coffee, sodas, wine, etc like I read a lot of you all do. Water and ice tea are my go to beverages.

It doesn't burn fat, but it does keep me full enough that I don't want to snack between meals.

I also keep a check on my urine and if it becomes too pale, then I back off a bit.

ITA.  Unfortunately it's the only water option available at work.

Can you bring your own? Now that I have to drink at least 3 liters per day I went and bought six 1-gallon bottles at Costco and at the end of the week I take them to a refilling station at the grocery store. It only costs 30 cents per gallon for a refill and since I'm not physically drinking out of the gallon bottle, it is ok to refill it a handful of times before putting the bottle into recycling.
