Love the tweet that say #hometovote is like watching the Hobbit and an army of elves you'd forgotten from earlier in the film arrive over the hill.

Good luck! Be sure and let us know when there's an answer. (I always get my news faster here than anywhere else.)

I follow the BBC news twitter account, and it seems like (at least based on my limited knowledge of how the system works) that there are a lot of people that are for it-or at the very least some big names in the world of Irish politics are coming out (so to speak) for it.

It has the backing of all the main political parties but I believe it is a world first to have a referendum on the question.

I heard about this, and I am hopefull it will have a positive outcome. Interesting that it is put to a referendum... But this makes me wonder; is abortion still illegal in Ireland? It just seems to be that the Irish people might be very conservative in regards to familyvalues. Just curious, if anyone knows please enlighten me

rainangel As far as I'm aware abortion is still illegal in Ireland unless it endangers the life of the woman.

Good luck, I hope it is a YES vote!
I can only hope my country eventually gets its act together and allows same sex marriage. I'm sure it will happen in my lifetime, but hurry up already!

I got up this morning thinking that there would be an answer, but I guess they are still counting votes?

it passed. Ireland is now the first country to legalize gay marriage by popular vote. Proud of my heritage today!

Great for Ireland, but this Aussie is hanging her head in shame on behalf of her country.
Seriously Australia is one country that would have been expected to lead the charge on this (and should have) but our politicians are keeping us well and truly in the dark ages.

Wonderful. So pleased to see the Catholic Church losing more and more of its power in Ireland and delighted for those to whom this will apply.

YAY!! I found out about the result via Facebook whilst I was at the football last night. Great for Ireland, but this Aussie is hanging her head in shame on behalf of her country. Seriously Australia is one country that would have been expected to lead the charge on this (and should have) but our politicians are keeping us well and truly in the dark ages.
My thoughts exactly pjaye. I am embarrassed and ashamed. I would LOVE to have a referendum here on whether to allow same sex marriages. Then when we have an overwhelming YES vote, stick it up the clackers of the gutless politicians.

Go Ireland! This kinda makes the fuss over allowing gays to march in St. Patty's Day parades seem a little silly.

Thrilled for Ireland. And I'm surprised how many people are surprised. Yes, Ireland is socially conservative, but my off the boat Irish mother in law used to say things like: "the Pope can stay out of my bedroom!" and "we love who you love." It's family first there and, if you have a gay child, well, nobody better tell them what their child can and can't do. It's an exciting day for Ireland and the whole world.
