It is one of my favorite recipes. I made it this week without the onion and I loved it even more but then again I am not a fan of raw onion.
Yes it looks delicious! I make something similar with avocado, mango and Spanish onion.

The same old same old is so good though, lol!
I always do sauteed mushrooms with steak. I prefer oyster mushrooms because they are so meaty and don't shrink down as much.

In the context of the post I believe it's the same thing. Where I live we use BBQ'd interchangeably with Grilled. Technically though, I think, BBQ interprets as low and slow and Grill interprets as hot and fast. This is one of those words that always gets me tickled. In my world, bbq doesn't refer to the how something is cooked (slow/low, fast/hot) or that it is on a grill, bbq is the sauce that is put on the meat. You can have bbq chicken that is made on the grill, in the oven, in the crock pot... You can have sweet bbq sauce, you can have vinegary bbq sauce, you can have all kinds of sauce...
You grill out on the grill. You put bbq sauce on the meat.
Down in my neck of the world, if you told someone that you wanted bbq steak, they would look at you like you were speaking Martian. Yep, that's the south for you.

Either sauteed onions and mushrooms or creamy stuffed mushrooms
Skewered veggies: chunks of onion, mushroom, peppers, cherry tomatoes
Wedge salad with homemade blue cheese and ranch dressing
Spinach and strawberry salad
Cucumber, tomato, red onion, kalamata or black olives, garbanzo beans with a Greek style viniagrette
grilled stuffed tomato halves
herb butter to go on the steak and the corn on the cob
twice baked new potatoes
deviled eggs
Garlic bread on the grill

Can't help you with your sides. Although sometimes, we grill some shrimp on skewers. Our typical sides are corn and/or baked potatoes and a dinner bread of some kind.
edited to add...sometimes, I'll throw some fresh pineapple (either on skewers or rings) on the grill...but I'm not sure I consider that a side. Just a little bonus treat.

Thanks for all of the wonderful ideas.
We always spread barbecue sauce on the meat while it's being barbecued.
I learned a bunch from this thread!!! I always thought everyone thought "barbecue" meant the same to them as it does to me.

I love fried mushrooms with my barbecued steak. And lately I've been making a creamy onion salad that I quite like to accompany any type of meat. Do you mind sharing the recipe? I'm hoping grilled onions might be involved

With steak, I typically serve a potato, green beans, corn, shrimp, crab cakes, salad, bread, & chocolate dessert.
Although I despise BBQ (i.e. pork slow-cooked, & usually smoked, at a low temperature over hardwood & basted or served with a tomato/vinegar/pepper sauce), I serve the obligatory slaw (with a tomato/vinegar/pepper base, no mayo), baked beans, salad, bread, & fruit dessert.

Our family faves are a nice creamy potato bake & a caprese salad. Usually a nice fresh salad as well.

I'm picturing us walking into Home Depot and asking where the barbecues are. I kid! I kid! I know it's a regional thing. But do the Home Depot ads call them grills or barbecues? ETA: I forgot about the original question. I fix a fruit salad pretty much every night from mid-April until October so there would be that. Maybe a green salad. Definitely some grilled veggies. I slice up some onions, zucchini, red bell pepper and a lot of mushrooms then marinate in a splash of House Italian dressing. Grill for about 10-15 minutes. Yummy! I've also grilled pineapple smeared with brown sugar.

An appliance used to cook/grill outdoors is a barbecue - ergo anything made on it is barbecued, even if you're weird, like my mom ? and don't want sauce on your meat. re the original question - depends on how many at coming. If it were just the 4 of us, salad, potatoes + one other hot veggie (two if we have corn on cob) and salad. If guests - any extra couple salads, maybe one more vegetable.

When I was growing up, it was "forbidden" to put anything on steak, Dad's assumption being why would a really nice cut of beef "need" anything except salt and pepper. In his world, a lesser cut of beef might necessitate A1 or something, (but he never would have served lesser cuts of beef)
I've never heard of putting barbecue sauce on steak.

I'm sitting here looking at my June 2015 Consumer Reports and they call them grills. In other areas of the country does this article call them barbecues?
