I'm sending my oldest daughter off to college soon and my younger daughter will be a 7th grader in the fall. It's good that she'll be ready to take over the daily reminders of just how stupid we are. Me too! (oldest to college, youngest to 7th, and a 15 yr. old that will be a junior)
I love these responses, because each one I can relate to with my girls!

Is any of his lack of focus due to the concussion? Maybe he's just taking longer to process?
My friend is having the daily struggles of getting her son up, getting homework done, etc. In his case, I think there may be some undiagnosed ADD/ADHD issues. He has never been able to sit still, stood in class, bounces on his toes frequently. She is having a tough time with him right now. He's just 14.
Hang in there.

He's not a monster kid and he doesn't even have a bad attitude 97% of the time, it's just the daily realization that there is no way he'll ever be able to function in the real world. Someday after we send him to college, they'll find him comatose from dehydration in front of the Playstation, twenty pounds of skittles wrappers surrounding him, wearing wrinkled unwashed, unmatching clothes, hair having been unwashed for 2 weeks despite thrice daily 45 minute showers, never having attended a single class because he couldn't wake up in time. One of my daughters friends had a roommate at Yale who is essentially this person. I cannot Imagineactually getting into yale and then flunking out in the first quarter because I never went to classes.

I want to add that there is light at the end of the tunnel. There comes a time when you actually get to enjoy the delightful people they become

I'm sorry for chuckling but I remember those days and not so fondly. My girls are now 39 and 41 and they are the most dependable, compassionate, aware young women I know. It does get better! A lot better!
