Ok, so we need a new car. And for the first time in my life I'm considering a brand new one. Specifically, looking at the Toyota Yaris hybrid. We took one for a test drive today and it was so quiet! But surprisingly nippy and coped really well with some big hills.
(I'm looking at a brand new one because I can get a 0% finance deal. If I get a used one, I'd still have to get some finance but it wouldn't be 0% so I'd end up paying the same anyway.)
So...anyone got one? What are they like to run?

We looked at both the Toyota Yaris hybrid and the Honda Jazz hybrid and liked both but we went for the Honda because we just like Honda. Really pleased with the hybrid and it's good on fuel consumption. The Toyota 0% finance deal is good too so it would be a win/win if you decide to go for the car!! Well, in my opinion anyway!!

Ah, ok, cool! I've never met anyone else who has one, so it's good to hear you're enjoying yours. How are you finding the battery? They're supposed to last as long as the cars, I think?

We have the all-electric Nissan Leaf (my husband requires that you say all four words when people ask about the car....he's pretty nerdy about it). We looked at all of the hybrids and since we have a minivan that we take when all five of us need to go together, we opted for the all-electric for him for a commuter car. We leased a new one, something I swore I'd never do, because that allowed us to roll the entire government incentive into the three year lease and our payments are less than what we used to spend on gas. It's peppy, fun to drive, and there are a bunch of charging stations in DFW so we can take it wherever we want to go in the area.
I have a business that sometimes involves making deliveries, so he'll let me use it to make deliveries and it's saving us a TON on gas doing those, too. I'm thrilled with it.
The hybrids were a good choice, too. He really liked the Honda and that's what we were looking for, but for us the math on the all-electric is what made it win out over the hybrid.

I don't have that Toyota. I have the Prius. I love it. I get over 50 MPG! It is very quiet.

We leased a 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid a year ago. I love it. I went from a big Yukon that was getting 10.1 mpg to a little sedan that gets 30. LOVE it! No problems so far, we have the maintnance included for the life of the lease (3 years.) One recall that it was taken care of no problem.
Typically I'm at 28-30 mpg (almost all city driving.) When we travel I can get it to 45-49 mpg. I do notice that if we haven't driven it much for a few days the battery will be low and I'm using more gas than battery power. But once I spend a "normal" day driving it charges back up.

I got a Prius in 2007. Traded it in on a 2013 model last year. I love it, it gets great mileage, it's comfortable, and much roomier than you'd think.
I really would love to have a tesla. But until I can afford one, the Prius will do.

My dh drives a 2013 Toyota Camry hybrid. We love it. The gas mileage is incredible, and it is a smooth and quiet ride.
We didn't really consider the Prius, but we chose the Camry over the Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata hybrids. In our opinion, it had the best ride, the best pickup, and the interior feel really appealed to us.

Most of the driving I do is freeway driving and my commute is about 40 minutes each way. When my husband, a nerdy engineer ( ) analyzed the cost savings from reduced fuel usage, it did not off-set the extra cost of a hybrid car. If you do mainly city driving, you'll save money, but not if most of your driving is at freeway speeds.
That being said, everyone I know who has a hybrid loves it! My DD and SIL had a Toyota Prius that they loved. Unfortunately the electrical system got wet when they drove through a deep puddle. The cost to repair/replace the electrical system was about $15,000 so the insurance company ended up totaling the car out as by that point it was worth less than that as it was several years old.

DH has a 2007 (I think that's the year) Toyota Prius with about 230,000 miles, original battery. So far, so good and he only gets it serviced at Jiffy Lube.

Ok, I guess I don't need to worry about battery life then. Most of the driving I do is freeway driving and my commute is about 40 minutes each way. I live in a small county in the UK where there are no motorways/freeways, but lots of little country roads and small towns. Our current car has a big gas-guzzling engine and I reckon the hybrid could at least double our mpg. I really would love to have a tesla. But until I can afford one, the Prius will do. YES! This is my DH. Thanks for all your comments everyone...I am quite excited about this. If I get a hybrid, I'll post a pic!

Our county is much the same away from the one main road going north, and we have no motorways. Our car does a regular journey over the Military Road which runs alongside the Roman Wall. The Romans may have built the road absolutely straight but it goes over hilly terrain so is like a roller coaster!! The hybrid copes really well with that and still comes up with excellent mpg. We have had our Honda Jazz hybrid for about a year now and haven't noticed any problems with the battery. We like the fact that it's quiet and great on both urban and more main roads and good in small towns.

We were seriously considering the 'all electric Nissan Leaf' but because of a regular run over a remote country road and a lack of charging stations around there we decided to go with the Honda Jazz. However, we do have another Honda Jazz (non hybrid) and when it comes time to change that I'm pretty sure we will go with the Nissan Leaf as it would be a commuter car - and especially after reading your description of your experience with it!

We looked at various options for dh when he was changing his car this year. We were tempted by hybrid or full electric but it turned out that they were going to be too expensive for the type of driving he did. We ended up with an Eco boost model which has a small engine but a turbo boost so you don't realise you're driving a car with a small engine. It definitely pays to do your sums and work out fuel cost and everything you are paying just now vs. what you will be paying for the new one.
Happy car shopping!

I have a VW Jetta with a Diesel engine. Not a hybrid, but it gets GREAT gas mileage---50 mpg on the hiGhway and 30--35 in town. I really like the size and comforts of this car. Check it out.

We have a Mercury Milan hybrid- no longer made, we bought the last model year. We love it!
One thing, it is so quiet that people walking through a parking lot may not hear you coming behind them. I freaked a parking booth guy out because he thought I turned it off when it was in electric mode. And if you do any kind of valet parking, give them a heads up, too!

Ahhh, yes - good point, I had forgotten to mention that! You do have to be a little more vigilant in car parks. Thanks for the heads up on the valet parking, I'm not sure I would have thought to mention that! Hadn't heard of the Mercury Milan hybrid so just googled it.....nice looking car!
