Beautiful photo and beautiful bird! We have a lot of intresting birds in & around the yard ( snowy egrets, roseate spoonbills, herons, woodstorks, sandhill cranes, bald eagles, hawks, snail kites, woodpeckers) but I never get a great photo like that.

Your photo is beautiful.
I love how the background is blurred, and the tree limb/bird is crisp!

I am a pretty poor photographer, so I won't share, but I love your beautiful bird and the other photos the rest have shared. I'm very fond of the dragonfly, especially.

That really is a great shot! Such a pretty little fellow. Can I ask what lens you used? I'm saving for a super telephoto - haven't decided exactly what yet, but as you say they're not cheap! ETA in the same vein, but far less impressive, this one was taken in my garden a few days ago. I used my DH's P&S which was to hand - not bad quality, especially as this is through glass, but I shot it by looking at the LCD not through a viewfinder, and just chopped off the point of his toe. It's a juvenile starling, they've just fledged recently, and have been regular visitors. I also like this one - we went to a local lambing event a few weeks ago. The lambs were super cute, but my favourite shot of the day was these two expectant ewes looking at us very suspiciously.

Though I really wish I did! I have a Nikon D5300 and I used the Nikon 55-300 mm that was part of a body & two lens kit at Costco. It's a pretty good lens, but it would be nice to have something longer. I've been thinking about getting a great lens, but what I think I'm going to do is get a spotting scope and adapter that I can use for digiscoping. That will give me more magnification for photos than a lens can, and the scope will be useful for general birding purposes as well.

My longest lens is currently 250mm, so I definitely need something longer. Last one I added to my kit bag was a 10-22mm, so I'm going from one extreme to the other!

jennyap, unless you're an avid bird- or nature-watcher, it's not the route I would recommend going. For us, though, it makes sense. If I buy an expensive long lens, I'm the only one who can use it. Then we'd probably need to upgrade DH's & DS's binoculars as well and those are also quite pricy (I almost had a coronary when I priced some). If we get a good spotting scope, we can all use it. As expensive as they can be, it will be less than the alternatives for us. However, spotting scopes are bulky and if your primary use case is general photography, not just birds/wildlife, I don't think you'd be happy with that solution. Optics are SO expensive. And here I thought birding would be a simple, inexpensive family hobby

jennyap - I really like both of those, and I hate starlings I love the sheep that's half hiding behind the other one and looking at you so skeptically.

What a handsome little guy! Do you have to use a telephoto lens to capture these? (I guess I should read the entire thread before I ask that.)

That is a fabulous photo! If you were local, I'd suggest you enter it into our nature preserve's annual photo contest. You should look for something similar in your area. Very nice composition.

Nice!
Your best bet for the hummingbirds is to set yourself up in a chair with your camera on a tripod. Work on setting your shot for the area where the birds are likely to hover and then wait. Try to be still without driving yourself crazy. I'll try to dig up a my hummingbird photo where I did this and got a great shot with my old Canon G3.
P.S. If you have a remove shutter, even better. They aren't very expensive at all.
