Specifically from Albuquerque NM back. We plan to stop at Four Corners Monument, the Grand Canyon (1 or two nights) then down through Fullerton, CA (to visit one of her friends for lunch). From there, we'll head to San Jose and stay a couple of nights with family. Then on through Redding, Horn Brook then up I5 into Oregon. We plan on a one-way car rental, which is horrendously expensive, and I think we'll try and stay at "Choice" hotels which seem to get fairly good ratings and look quite affordable. My question: do you know of a way to get a one-way rental at a decent price? And, do you know of any awesome landmarks we'll be passing that we wouldn't know to look for? Thanks in advance!

I referenced this website in another recent road trip thread. Road Side America. You can find all sorts of unique things to see or just drive by on this website. Have fun... I did a two-week road trip with my then 15-year old daughter three years ago. It was my favorite vacation ever.

You didn't mention when your trip is but I believe that during the summer you can see Native American dances every evening in Gallup, NM. And you can drive straight to the 4 corners from there.

Sounds like a great trip . If you don't already have plans for where you are eating in Fullerton and like Greek food, try Kentro Greek Kitchen - the food is great. It is in the old downtown area that has some fun shops to poke around in like Out of Vogue which supplied a lot of the set pieces/accessories for Mad Men. Lake Shasta Caverns are less than 30 minutes north of Redding and always on my list but we haven't made the stop yet. Not really landmarks, but we have planned stops in Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and in Grants Pass for the Hellgate Jet Boat river tour. The whole town of Jacksonville, OR is designated a national landmark and is a very short detour off the 5 at Medford. We stopped for lunch there on a trip many years ago. I would talk to someone at the car rental and try to be as flexible as possible where you are picking up/dropping off the car. I don't know where you are ending up in OR, but it might be worth the extra time to take it to the Portland airport location instead of the one nearest your destination. Once you have a couple of quotes, go back & forth and ask if they can get you a better price. I usually book through Costco, but for this I'd go directly to Enterprise. Another thing to try is breaking the trip into two rentals NM-San Jose, San Jose- OR instead of NM-OR.

How far up into Oregon are you going, and what is your daughter's age?

I know nothing about rental cars, but as you are driving up I5 stop in Corning California at the Olive store. They really have good stuff in there.. Also stop and enjoy the view of Mt. Shasta. It is beautiful. Enjoy the drive and listen to good music.. I love car trips with my daughter. We always stop at the olive store and mt shasta.

From everyone I know who has been there, I would hope you're not going to far out of your way to visit. If you are a AAA member could you call them about the rental cars? Have fun ~ y'all will have a ball!
