I think I'm going to hyper-ventilate. DS#2 (he's 15 and should know better!) was loading the dishwasher, that's the good news. The bad news is, that as I walked into the kitchen to see how he was doing, I discovered that he was pouring Dawn liquid dish soap in the rinse-aid compartment.
His Dad's come over and the two of them are working on getting it out. They have the shop vac out and they're trying to suck all the dish soap out of the dish washer.
I guess this could be worse. He could have just run it and we would have bubbles all over the kitchen.

Actually, the shop vac. is working. They're also pouring water into the rinse-aid compartment to flush it out.

Do you know the vinegar and salt trick to get rid of the bubbles from any leftover dishsoap?

Phew! Thank goodness you didn't run it that would have been a giant mess to clean up. Maybe a little vinegar to rinse out the dregs? ETA: Hello Cookie Monster @ IAmUnoriginal above.

Put a cup of white vinegar directly in the bottom of your dishwasher and toss a couple handfuls of salt on top of that. Run your dishwasher on a regular cycle. The vinegar and salt helps to break down any bubbles. Put towels on the floor all around your dishwasher just in case it bubbles over. Sometimes it takes two cycles, but with the shop vac, you should be in pretty good shape.

Whew! Lucky you walked in on time.
I'm wondering about vinegar/salt too.

My grown nephew was arguing with his mom the last time they were visiting. He said she did everything for him and he never learned how to do anything until he moved out as an adult. Maybe if she had shown him how to do laundry he wouldn't have put dishwashing powder in his washing machine front loader liquid holder. I felt it was a giant victory for me because I made my kids start doing their own laundry at seven.

Every once in a while, I have a brain fart and put laundry soap in the softener dispenser of our washing machine. DH's fix for that was a turkey baster. After the 3rd time of me making that stupid human move, he bought a turkey baster that now has a permanent home near the washing machine. L ETA: Dawn in the dishwasher is MUCH more preferable than an entire commercial sized bottle of the stuff poured onto your fabric couch. Yep, two of my urchins once did that very thing. We never did get all of blue goop out.

One time I was at someone's house, and I was going to help them out by loading and starting their dishwasher. I started putting some soap in, and my friend that was with me, stopped me, and said,"Not THAT soap! That's handwashing detergent! You have to use THIS stuff!" So we put the stuff he gave me in and started the dishwasher. We started talking, and he was telling me about a time he put handwashing detergent in a dishwasher. I looked over at the dishwasher, and bubbles were starting to pour out. I couldn't get the words out, and started to pull the plug when I electrocuted myself. We finally got the dishwasher stopped, and were trying to clean up when the people we were helping out came home, lol.
I gave him a bad time after that. "Not THAT soap, it's THIS stuff!"

Oh, and in my defense, I did dishes growing up all the time, but we never had a dishwasher, so I didn't know about the kind of soap to put in a dishwasher.

(Shhhh I did that once, too, by accident. I was thinking I was putting in powder and put in blue Dawn. Brilliant--not!)
