The second set of sheets thing is a joke among my friends with boys. Despite our strong advice to only send one set, one friend insisted on sending two. At the end of the year, the second set came back still in the package.
My daughter would say ziplock bags (assorted sizes) were the best thing I suggested. My son's ziplock bags, on the other hand, came home dusty...

I never asked about the sheets. It made me feel better to be able to pretend. At Christmas, I bought him a couple of pairs of fleece running pants, a couple of long sleeved shirts and a fleece zip up jacket. He told me he sleeps in the pants/shirt, gets up, brushes his teeth, puts on the jacket and goes to class. He said thank you for making his life so easy. (Read lazy boy goes to college. )

Do you have a Bed, Bath, and Beyond in town? Ours has at least a dozen of the closest colleges' list of what to bring and what not to bring. My son was on the fence about staying in the dorms (school is about 22 minutes from our house) and I brought home that list from BBB and he signed up that night.

Thank you for all your input. We were at orientation the past two days so all your posts were appreciated when I got back.
I did hear to get a trash can - and a solid one, not a metal mesh one. I guess if the party gets a bit out of hand a mesh garbage can won't help much. That's advice for mom of boys!

Windex wipes or other cleaning wipes. Microwave safe cup, bowl and plate, a box of disposable forks/spoons
If they are going some distance from home, order or mail things to arrive for move in day - we had dd's printer, some bed linens, and other things sent to pick up the day we got there. Bed bath and Beyond will also do a pick up locally.
