We put in a pool in 2002 and it was one of the best things we ever did!
Ours is 5 feet at its deepest. That was deep enough for us. It goes from 3-1/2 to 5.
Nobody ever comes by uninvited.
I don't worry about drowning. Probably 99.9% of the people who are at our pool are adults. DH and I do have a firm rule though that no one swims alone.

We bought our house with a pool and we love it.
We've never had a problem with people showing up invited or being a nuisance. We use it nearly every day in the summer.
The pool goes from 3.5 to just under 5 feet which is great for pool volleyball and floating.
We got a salt water chlorination system which was the best decision - it's cut the chemical maintenance by more than 50%. We test it and vacuum the pool every week and shock it every so often and that's about it.
By the way, we also have a hot tub and we actually get even more use out of that.

I live in Texas where we can use our pool a lot, a hell of a lot more than you can in Yakima! & how I know this is because I used to live there & still have tons of family there! I visit them every summer & the ones that have pools have covers on them, solar covers.
I don't cover my pool, not even in the winter. It runs on a salt system which is pretty cheap. Not cheap to install tho. I have 3 waterfalls on it & a diving board. It is 10 feet deep at the deepest end. I am in the process of building a new home & will build a pool with it but this pool will have a beach front entrance. Try to so that if you can MaryMary, you will be glad you did, no stairs!!!!
My Rottie swims the most in the family & then me,. No near drownings, nothing like that even. No friends showing up...maybe it's because I don't encourage it!!! They all come over when invited tho!

We bought a house with a pool. TBH, I wish we didn't have it. It's great for floating on a hot day. But it has to be cleaned once a week or pay someone $50 per week to do it. We pay for additional insurance for it. And in our case it's below our house so when we have a pool party everything has to be carried down 23 stairs. The back up again. And there's no toilet down there. My sisters family gets the most use out of it, but I feel like I have to entertain them if they come over. We don't heat ours (propane is too expensive here) so if we don't have good weather it doesn't heat up. We probably use less than 20 times per year. So our expense outweighs our enjoyment.
And like TxMary said, no one swims alone. DH doesn't like sun, so I don't go down there alone.
(My post sounds like I'm grumpy today!)

We bought a house with an inground pool, and it had a lot of problems. We nursed it through 17 years of them, and last summer it sprang a leak we couldn't fix. At that crossroads, my husband and I went through all the pros and cons during the course of a month.
This Memorial Day weekend, we took our first swim in the NEW POOL!
And this is in Indiana, where we were only getting three months of use out of our old pool. Now with the new heaters and automatic cover, we're thinking we can get May and September each year, too. We absolutely thought the fun was enough to take out a loan for it.
We do find it's harder to get away on weekends because that's prime pool time and therefore people ask to come over then, but some of that is on us and how we interact with our friends and family. We've always told them they're welcome. On the other hand, we do have two families we're good enough friends with we've taught them how to open the cover, and we trust them to use the pool if we're not here. We're talking adults who might come over and jump in while we're at a wedding or church services or whatever.
We're the magnet house for summer holidays, and we now have two grills on the deck to keep up with the July Fourth type crowds.
We not only have a deep end, we have a diving board on it to go with the volleyball net and basketball net. I'd say the only oddball rule we have is that with all of this activity, we don't serve alcohol at our backyard events for liability reasons. I don't care if someone brings a six pack of Bud and has a beer with their burger, but we don't supply it and we ask our friends not to bring glass bottles or just sit around drinking all afternoon. Not a single person in the now 18 years we've had a pool has ever balked or tried to get around that rule.
No one has even come close to drowning, but when our circle of friends' kids were younger, I did ask that we have at least one person in the backyard who was lifeguard trained. Worst accident we've had was when my husband was in a race, lost track of where he was in the pool and raised his head up to hit the floating rope bolt. He ripped the side of his head open and needed stitches. These days, they build those suckers recessed, so that can't happen.

When we were house hunting and saw this house, I told DH the backyard was meant to have an inground pool. He laughed. It already had an above ground, which was fine, but our yard is a decent size, and a rectangle. It needed a pool. So, 6 years after moving in, I got my pool!
We live the SW suburbs of Chicago, so our pool is usually open from mid-May until mid-September. We get plenty of use out of it. The only "guest" that's showing up regularly is my mom, lol. I don't mind her here, but, ummmm, sometimes I'd like to just float alone, or dh and I have some time alone. That doesn't happen often, lol.
We have a deep end with a diving board, but added 4 more feet to the shallow end because we wanted to have decent sized shallow and deep ends. They both get used a lot. I actually use the deep end a lot to get away from my kids when they want to try to sink me, or annoy me by splashing me (they'll get tired of swimming after me so retreat back to the shallow lol). Oh how I do love the days when no one's here and I'm floating alone with the fountain feature on the diving board on. It's so relaxing.
The year we had the pool put in we didn't buy the auto robot cleaner. The first thing we did the following year was buy one, and that thing is a lifesaver. I drop it in the pool in the early morning and let it run until we're ready to swim. That thing is absolute must if you ask me.
Also, I don't "do" the skimmer baskets. Nope...no way; dh has to do that. I won't even open them to see what's in there. I've seen enough bees, cicadas, mice, frogs, spiders the size of a small child in there and I just can't. I'll do everything else except that. No way. Nope.
I absolutely love it, and do not regret it. It's a bit of work when it's first opened in the spring, but you get in a routine, and it's pretty simple after that.
