DH and I are going to build a covered patio off the back & side of our house. We're planning to screen in a portion of it and leave a portion of it unscreened. We're in Texas and don't want to make it an "all season room," we just want to screen it in due to bugs.
Tell me what you love, hate, or wish you'd done differently with yours. Sky is the limit. Bonus points for pictures. I'll post a cool gif for you if you post pictures.

We really appreciated when our contractor put screen underneath the porch boards to keep bugs from coming in that way. I wish we had room for a hammock, but we love having a large table, chairs & comfy furniture on our screen porch. We live in NC & spend a lot of time out there.

We have a 3 season room, different than what you're describing. Every person I spoke to prior to us adding this to our home said that they wished theirs was larger. So, our room is a good size. We have a lot of space and seating in ours.
Just wondering....if you don't want the bugs why not screen the whole area? If bugs are an issue I'm guessing you won't use what isn't screened in.

We don't have one (yet!) but spend a lot of time in my brother's when we go to NC. He has a main table and chairs, plus several accessory seats/chairs and small tables; an overhead fan/light; bamboo-type roll-up shades for the afternoon sun; entry from the house AND from the rest of the deck. What he wishes they had done differently is make it somewhat deeper, although it's a pretty large space, and added more lighting and outlets. He's also mentioned having the entire deck screened in. Me? I just love it and wish so much we had one! Yoki - that's a wonderful idea from your contractor! If we ever have one, I'll make sure to include that.

Just wondering....if you don't want the bugs why not screen the whole area? If bugs are an issue I'm guessing you won't use what isn't screened in. Great ideas, I agree you can never go wrong with more lighting & outlets! Easier to put in when it is being built. The idea of screening under the deck boards is GENIUS! We're going to do a stamped concrete patio, but that is super smart. To answer the question, it would make more sense if you saw our house, but it will be sort of an L-shape and there's a natural breaking point. The unscreened area will be close to the kitchen and will be the grill area or if you want to sit out in the sun (we do have a big tree over the area to provide shade but there are pockets of sun or in the winter). To put a grill in a screened porch requires more venting and "outdoor kitchen" than we probably want to shell out the money for. It also will be less imposing in our backyard. This patio will take up probably 60% of our backyard (because we have a rear entry garage, our backyard is split, our side and front yards are much larger), so having part of it not going 8 - 10 feet in the air with "walls" will make it feel more open.

Pretty much what everyone else said. We used to have a screened-in porch (it has since come into disrepair and is on our loooong list of things to work on) and we loved it. We also had the concrete floor.
One of the things I liked was that the screens were only halfway up. It definitely helped keep out the water, splashing mud when it rained and random grass clippings. It also allowed for a little ledge where I was able to put votives all around the 3 sides. It was so pretty at nite w/all those candles glowing.
Things I hated were that whoever built it didn't use the right wood and it all rotted. I'm guessing pressure treated is the way to go? I also wish we had more lights & outlets and when we rebuild, we will be addressing that issue. And like everyone else said, make it as big as your space/budget will allow. Trust me - you can never have too big a porch!

We put a doggie door in ours. Not sure if you have pets but my doggie uses it all the time...and it means we can leave the back door open for him some too.
Ours is rather large as it was underneath a 2nd story deck (which we had to water/bug proof). We have a concrete floor and it is easy to upkeep compared to outdoor carpet or tile. We have a hose/waterspout IN the screened room too (it was already there).
We did two ceiling fans since it was a long space. Probably double what other ones I have seen. But we do love sitting out there when we have company or when it is raining/storming.
We have a sofa, chair, end table, coffee table and then a bar height table with 2 stools. We got a used hottub that we put in at the same time. We love it!

I hate that I don't have one! I'd go out onto my patio a lot more if the mosquitoes would leave me alone!

I wish my patio had an actual roof or cover. It's under a huge shade tree which is nice. The downside is I have to keep covers on the furniture unless it's in use to keep the bird poop off. Luckily, nobody has been pooped on while sitting on the furniture.

We love ours. Let me second the ceiling fan and extra outlets. I work out there on nice days and it's nice to have a plug for my computer.
Pay the extra money for decent outdoor furniture -- Pier One stuff broke down from the weather in a few years. Lloyd Flanders is going on 18 years now and is in perfect condition (I've replaced the cushions.)
My screened porch is my absolute favorite spot in the house and I've never regretted putting it in.
If you have a wood floor, skip the oil-based porch paint. Ours is too slippery when it's wet. I should have left it alone.
Our screens were DIY, and we're perfectly capable of replacing them if the neighbor's dog runs through...

I haven't tried to post a picture here yet, so not sure if this is going to work or not. That said, here is my take on the screen porch: We used to have a 4-season porch at our last house. LOVED it. It was right off our kitchen and also had a screen door to the deck. Now we have a screen porch that you have to go outside to get to. I know I will sound lazy, but we just don't use it and I think we would use it more if there was a door directly from the house to the porch. We get all sorts of bugs in the porch and also get all that cottony stuff from the trees stuck in the screens. It is a pain to keep clean. We don't even have any furniture in it (picture was taken when furniture was in it from previous owners). My advice is to make it accessible and convenient to use. Also, good lighting, lots of plug ins, and do whatever you can do to keep the bugs out because they always find a way in. And, comfortable furniture that is weather proof.

Hope this isn't too big. I also did the screen under the deck boards to keep out bugs. We have a ceiling fan and several outlets along with a cable hookup so we can watch TV out there. One thing DH did was to make our screens in panels. If one gets damaged all he has to do is pop it out and repair or replace. you can't tell from the photo but it's a big room. I have a table that seats 6 along with a portable buffet type thing and a seating group in one corner.

Minnesota*Mom - can't see the picture, but great tips and an earnest try! Bugs, they will get in. Your message has been received. And yes, we will have 1, if not 2, doors from the house to the patio. lindas, your home is beautiful!! I like the idea of running cable out there. We don't have cable right now, but you never know, and easy to run while you're at it.

I'm having a hard time envisioning what you mean by not totally screened....will one of the sides be open/not screened and won't that defeat the purpose?
I always thought screened in porches were very 1970s, but I like the examples posted here. Minnesota Mom, I love the colors in yours and Linda S, your house is gorgeous and I love your cute little doggies!

I'm having a hard time envisioning what you mean by not totally screened....will one of the sides be open/not screened and won't that defeat the purpose? Okay, so the patio base will be L-shaped wrapping around the house. The larger back side (south side of the house) will be a screened room, totally enclosed. Then there will be a narrower patio along the west side of the house that is connected to the screened room but not screened in. There will be a door between the open and the enclosed areas. It would be rad if ProBoards had a whiteboard feature so you could draw out pictures in your replies!!!

We have a screen porch that we love. It is exposed on three sides, to the north, west and east and we get great breezes that way. Ours has the wood decking floor and we have the whole bottom of that screened. The actual screen portions are made of screen doors; they were originally wood doors but we replaced them about three years ago with vinyl door panels. We have the screens that are top to bottom open screen, with just some bars across the middle, and we like the added air flow/breeze rather than having partial screened walls. We have a ceiling fan with a light made for outdoors and we have the fan and light on dimmers so we can control both. We do have an outlet on the porch. If I were doing it again I'd have had them put another on the other side of the door into the house (door is in the middle of the wall), but it wouldn't be that difficult to have one put in now. We have fairly wide overhangs around the porch, which gives a little more protection from rain and sun. We just got a new sun shade and installed that on the part of the west wall where the early evening sun can be glaring if you're facing it. We have an aggregate patio to the west and that's where our grill and more outdoor seating are.
Some things I love: we can hose down the whole porch when needed, we can replace just one door panel if we need to (we bought an extra when we redid the panels), we can sit out there when it's raining or when the bugs are bad. With the fan it's comfortable even if there isn't a breeze.
We just had neighbors over last Friday. When they were arriving it was raining very lightly. Once they were on the porch, it was fine to be sitting outdoors. We had 13 people on it, and it was a little tight, but we could have squeezed in another. The outside dimensions of our porch are 14' by 14'.
One thing we did when we got new porch furniture last year was get two smaller, 30" round, tables instead of one bigger one. This gives us more options for arranging the furniture, it's big enough for the two of us to eat at one when we grill and it makes it easier to have nearby tables for drinks and food when we have a bigger group and need to bring out more seating. We got the Telescope Casual brand and have been very happy with it. I'm sitting on our porch now and it's a beautiful day with a great breeze!

I totally agree with the ceiling fan suggestions and an outlet or two out there. Here's my board that I used for ideas when we built ours: Pinterest Board

We LOVE our screened in porch and deck; however, I told hubby the other day that the horizontal boards across should have been slightly lower or higher. We overlook the lake and have an acre of land but when I sit, I see the horizontal boards because I am so short. Hubby sees above it but for me, it's a problem. If there are going to be horizontal boards, make sure when you sit that they won't be in your line of sight! Here is a photo. Look to the far right, and you will see the horizontal board then smaller vertical boards below. Other than that, I love it! We have outlets, a ceiling fan with light, and really nice furniture in there. The only thing about the nicer furniture is that when the pollen comes, the furniture gets yellow. Wished I would have realized that. I also love the idea screening underneath because we do get some bugs. I may have our contractor come out and do that! Have fun!

We have a 14x18 screened in porch with a fireplace and two ceiling fans and can be entered from the back door off of the greatroom/diningroom or a door from our master bedroom. Then there is a 10 x 14 patio off of that so we have a lot of usable outdoor space. The only thing that I would suggest is to be sure that you have plenty of electrical outlets. The back porch has outlets on 2 walls, but one of those is over the fireplace where it is also wired for cable for a tv. I wish that we had an outlet on the other two walls, because we have a fountain that I would like to move to one of those walls. If it is where you can do this, before closing in your porch, take notice of where the sun is during the day. We had originally wanted our patio on the other side of the the screened porch, but the builder noted that the sun would be hitting it in the evening at that location. We put it on the other side and now the patio is shaded by the porch every evening, making it very pleasant to sit out there if we choose. Our original reason for having a screened in porch was so that our two cats could safely go out occasionally to enjoy the outdoors. Our precious kitty that died last summer, loved to go out there. Glad that we were able to give her that.

We put one in our last house. I used all sliding screen doors around it. Every day I wished I would have used windows instead and just had a knee high wall at the bottom.

We have a stone floor on our screen porch; obviously with stone or concrete you need to have a drain for water runoff. I agree that a ceiling fan is a huge plus. Our screen porch also has a fireplace with an outdoor TV hanging above it - it's my absolute favorite spot to watch football games.

We sold our house a few months ago and our screened porch is one of the things I miss most! Ours was big enough for an outdoor sofa, dining table, and our grill. It was fantastic to be able to cook/eat/relax outside regardless of rain.
Things I would recommend: - half wall to keep out splashes from rain(ours was vinyl siding on the bottom and screens on top) - solid flooring to keep bugs out - water spigot inside to easily wash down the porch - ceiling fan and lots of electrical outlets - if your house has gas, a gas hookup for the grill
