I buy expensive purses. Usually one new purse a year, but I have bought two in one year before.
Why?
Because I like them.
Some people want new cars. Some spend tons of money on food. Me? I like my purses.
I was in Las Vegas last weekend and yep. Bought a new makeup bag with the $ I won gambling.
Did I take any extra money home? Nope. But I did take home my original $ that I took with me AND a new makeup bag. So I was happy.

Maryland, purse, bag, handbag, it's all the same thing. Maybe what's 'current', maybe regional, maybe the age of the speaker, but there's really no difference. A thing to tote your stuff around in. Or, in south central PA, a 'pocketbook.' I usually say purse.

I think everybody should buy and carry the bags they like and enjoy and can afford comfortably and are happy with.
For me, being of moderate income and having a very small closet - I have a very tiny collection of bags. I have two i carry regularly plus one beloved tote bag and a backpack. I gave everything else away.
I have a Fossil and a Coach and the tote is a Baggallini. Mid range brands without a lot of social cachet but quite adequate for the task. I've seen higher end and lower end bags that I like too.
I don't have any emotion about the cost one way or another. I am just at a point in life where I'm done worrying about that, or about what anybody else thinks of my things. It's so much easier that way.

I don't carry a purse unless we are traveling. I would rather buy paper and stamps.
But don't ask me about pretty organizational pieces for my scrap room. Lol...

I have a hard time justifying expensive purses from a longevity perspective when my $40 JCP special lasts for years and years with frequent use. I like to have a lot of purse style choices and am perfectly happy with less expensive ones. But if you love the more expensive ones, rock on!

I have learned there is a definite difference in quality with slightly more expensive bags. And I'm talking like $150, not really much in the purse world. I beat them up going to and from work, I often use the same ones, I just switch out colors for seasons. I tried to buy a cheaper bag ($30) bcz I wanted to try a certain style I wasn't sure I would like. The zipper busted in about a month of use, so I learned my lesson there. Although, it was worth to figure out that style did work for me.
I don't really like the idea of a purse as a "status symbol", there are so many knock-offs, how can anyone really tell?!
I do know of someone who valued her purses more than her family, even though she was bankrupt. So I would never assume anything about anyone based on their purse! I do have 2 nice Michael Kors bags, but they were purchased half price as part of a fundraiser, so I'm sure someone could assume something about me when they see that, but I honestly don't even like Michael Kors style that much, I just got them for quality and to support a charity.
I say just do what works for you and what makes you feel comfortable. But that's pretty much my motto for all of life, I get that it's not always easy.

I am definitely an 'expensive' purse person ordinarily, and it's totally because they're well made and last a long time. I had a Coach purse that I finally had to retire last year because the edging is wearing out and can't be fixed-- but I used that purse for 15 years. and I still miss it.
I'm currently using a purse I got at Kohls for around $15 (their price tag said its regular price was somewhere upwards of $60- yeah, right- snort), and it's already falling apart. I'm going to get another Coach; I just have to decide what style-- I am fully prepared to pay anywhere from $300 - $500 for it, and it will be well worth it in my opinion.
I don't like purses that have huge logos on them just for the sake of being able to see the logo, but I totally think expensive purses (and shoes) are well worth the money if you look at it from a 'cost per use' standpoint and if you take care of them. 15 years of use from a $300 purse is pretty economical.

I'm not a designer person by any means, but several years ago I saw a friend carrying a designer purse that had my initials on it (a Dooney & Bourke) and thought it was the cutest thing ever. After investigating how much that bag cost, I was appalled-but within a year I saved up and bought it for myself. Didn't tell the husband how much - still can't believe I spent $235 on a purse! But he loved it (also was his initials) and he bought me several other purses over the years. What he liked (and I do also) is the customer service - when the zipper on that original bag broke, they replaced the bag for free. I have a large tote bag (in pink, of course )and the leather handle ripped. For $30, they replaced all the leather on the bag--and it looks like new, not 7 years old. After waiting a long time (and saving up), I just bought another bag -- leather this time (in pink, of course ) I'm wearing pants today that are 5 years old, my shirt is older than that, and I spent maybe $20 on my shoes--so I guess it all balances out.

I like designer purses, logos and all, let me show the world that I've got a nice purse lol. Most of mine don't have logos but I don't mind big Cs or the classic LV pattern. And of course Burberry has that classic plaid pattern that I love.
I don't really buy purses anymore, that was a thing I was into several years ago. But most of them weren't particularly super trendy styles, so I can still carry a 13 year old Kate Spade or whatever and they still look current. And, by having so many and switching them out frequently, they all are still in fabulous condition except the Coach our kitten chewed the straps on. Little bastard!

I don't typically buy expensive purses simply because I can't see spending that much money on a purse. That being said, DH bought me a D&B purse the Christmas I was pregnant with our now 18yo DS. It still looks much like it did when it was new. I usually switch to it in the winter time and use it for 3 or 4 months. I am hard on purses and that one has lasted like a champ. I will probably keep it til I die. I usually buy them at TJ Maxx where I can get a pretty decent quality bag for $30 or $40. Then I wear it the hell out. DH and I went to the mall this weekend to look for new tennis shoes. Dillards was having a really great sale on the name brand bags and they had a clearance table full of coach, MK, D&B etc. He made me stop and shop for a purse because he said my current purse is embarrassing because the fake leather is cracking and peeling on the straps LOL. He continued to 'lecture' me about the pros of going ahead and buying a good quality bag if I'm going to use the same one for so long (and he pointed out the still going strong 18 year old D&B). The sales clerks were getting a huge kick out of him. He made me feel better about splurging a little on a nicer purse than I would typically allow for myself. Then of course I couldn't choose between the ones I liked the best! I ended up getting a really nice purse for a good price and have had several compliments on it just the few days I've been carrying it. So my issue is spending the money, and honestly if were to buy a Coach for instance I wouldn't get one with the C logo all over it. Just not my thing. But I will say that I am tickled with my new 'expensive' purse (It's Kate something and was $150 originally and I got it for around $75). We have a friend that was going 'die' if she didn't get a Louis Vitton. It's ugly as hell (to me) and she spent over $1000. I was FLOORED. It's not even that big and isn't all the functional (again, that's only my opinion) and was a huge fight in her house until she got her way. I was more appalled by her foot stomping than the cost of the purse. I think it's one thing if your budget allows it, but completely another if it doesn't comfortably fit something like that. But to each their own!
