DH makes excuses for everything...
well the fridge is still under warranty so we'll have them come out and look at the door, could have happened to anyone (except we, and multiple other houseguests open the fridge many times a day and none of us have broken the door).
The milk and a lot of the food would have to have been tossed when we got back anyway (yes, but why didn't THEY toss it when they could not close the fridge and did they not notice the stench?!!? They certainly had no problem borrowing one of our coolers from the garage to keep their fruit and yogurt in while we were away - and WHY THE FUCK did they keep coming back to the damn house anyway?!?!!?)
You know how the back door key sticks (yes, but I also KNOW you stood there and dangled the key chain with the ONE KEY in your STUPID sister's face and said THIS IS THE KEY TO BOTH LOCKS FOR THE BACK DOOR, why the FREAK would she start shoving random keys in there?!?!?!)
The part that ticks me off is that we were still reachable, still in the country that first day so they could have called about the key if they were having trouble and the fridge as soon as they broke it.
And for the record - I ALWAYS say no when he says they're coming to stay, and I get overruled.....Let's not talk about the filthy, disgusting state of the shower when I went to get in it this morning....blech! I don't know that the hell they tried to wash off their bodies in there.....but DH will be cleaning it the next time.

Game over. They would NEVER be invited back or agree to them staying in the house EVER again. I would also make DH be the one to say this to them.
It would also be a consideration to have them pay not only to fix the door knob and fridge, but to also pay to refill the fridge.
Absolutely, TOTALLY unacceptable. Those are not house guests. They are unwelcome for any overnight stays. PERIOD.
I'm really sorry you are having to deal with that! Uncalled for.

I think you deserve another vacation. After you change the locks, of course. That's outrageous!

What did they say about their destruction? Who in their right mind would leave a refrigerator like that for a week?? Are they planning on paying to fix it?

I can come over and punch them all if you want. I'm not real busy. I'm in. And what do you mean 'overruled'? Hell, no. I suppose you can't stop them from visiting you, but Hotel *christine* is closed. And not just for the many renovations. Permanently.

And were they "supposed" to be staying in your house the whole time you were gone? I'd be having a lot longer conversation with my husband about the situation, if it were me, and I'd have to make it clear that this is NOT acceptable - and will never happen again!

Maybe you need to go spend a month at their house and cause your own destruction. (JK, but really.)

Alright, so here's the real question - what does your husband say (and do) about all this? Nosy me wants to know this too. Surely even he can't give them a pass for that kind of destruction.

destruction! (sorry ran out of room!) DH's sister and her family (BIL and 2 dds) are here for the MONTH of July! The whole month!! Yippeee!!!! They stayed with us from the 1st (well 1:00 am on the 2nd is when they got in) until the 5th. We were away from the 5th to the 13th, and they were there waiting for us when we returned late yesterday! Yay! When we left on the 5th, we gave them a key ring with ONE KEY on it which locks the back door. They were asked to just lock the back door when they left. Same key for the door knob and the lock above it. But, they couldn't get it to work. So they went to our key rack and grabbed other keys and shoved them in and tried to lock the door and proceeded to break a key off in the door knob. they decided the best course of action was to leave my house unlocked for our entire vacation, but continued to come and go as they pleased (which wasn't part of the original plan. But before they left, they also broke my refrigerator door which will no longer close and so they left that ajar all week, with food in it, that sweltered in the 80 & 90 degree heat and humidity and my house smelled like a thousand dead corpses were in there when I returned. I love having houseguests!!! Oh hell to the no. DH would be finding and requiring alternate arrangements for them or me. But I would not put up with that at all. I'm so sorry! I cannot imagine having people so thoughtless and careless in my home for a month.

Just curious as to the reason why they are there for a month. Is this month long vacation for them? Are they retired? Where were they supposedly staying while you were away for the week?

What did the house wreckers have to say for themselves?

How completely inconsiderate!! Why in the world would people (let alone family) think it would be ok to destroy things and then not even have the decency to try to fix things.
They would NOT be coming to stay at my home ever again! Do they vacation at your house often?

Well, my DH would have two alternatives: he could tell them to get out of the house immediately after getting cash to fix all their damage OR he could send me on an all-expenses paid vacation to my destination of choice until they leave---and hire a maid to deep clean the house when these pigs leave. Seriously, he EXCUSED them? WTH! It's a good thing you're married to him, because if I'd come home to that, DH wouldn't have had a chance to excuse anything. I'd have kicked their free-loading butts out of the house, and perhaps DH's with them.

Who decided they are staying a month? That's a really long time for any family. I love my family, but a month, I don't think so.

I can come over and punch them all if you want. I'm not real busy. I started reading this thread completely horrified and now between this comment and the gifs, I'm dying. I can't stop laughing. I'm really curious about how they acted about the whole thing. I could not apologize enough if I ever damaged property like that. I would be selling my luggage if I had to in order to pay for what I did.

MizIndependent - that's exactly what they're like! And they have offered to pay, but DH likes to play big strong older brother and never lets them.....
Fortunately SIL no longer works for the airline, so they don't come up as often as they used to. Unfortunately, since she no longer works, she's staying here for a month for the summer. Her DH can work remotely so he was back and forth all last week to use my DH's printer in his home office since the friends they were staying with had a non-working printer. And to check the house since they left it unlocked! I think he probably liked the quiet away from his crazy kids and wife and the kids of the friends they were staying with.

I know most people would say let the dh handle it since it is his family. However, in this case, where the dh is refusing to deal with it, then I would take matters into my own hands. It's also YOUR house and you should be able to evict those bums!
