I'm not sure if anyone pays attention, but I've mentioned before about DH being a coal miner and that he's been out of work. Our entire area is falling apart due to the changes in the coal and energy industry, thousands have been laid off and coal is the primary source of income here. Our community and many of others around us are dying. I'm back in college, I start the RN program 8/18, so we can't move out of the area right now and I'm 2 years away from that degree. We've been scraping by for the past year or 2 but it looks like unless something miraculous happens, our house is going to go into foreclosure. This is not a surprise and we have been looking at our options, it's just happening a little faster than I expected with the mass amount of homes already in foreclosure in the area. Many of the rentals in the area are not well cared for, so I'm hoping we can find a decent one we can afford and won't have to send our dogs to family members. They are like additional children and although I have family that is willing to care for them until we get back on our feet, I don't want to have to do that. Also, DH has seriously injured his knee just this past week and it looks as though he may have torn his LCL which will require surgery, the timing on this is definitely not good. He won't be able to move furniture for sure, so we will have to find additional help when the time comes. I have always been able to handle a ton of stress and take things in stride, but DD is 14 and I know its hard on her. We try to keep all the financial worries outside of her knowledge but she's a nosy little thing and hears enough to understand whats going on. If you can, just say a quick prayer or send some positive vibes our way, we can use all the we can get right now.

I am so sorry. We have faced times of unemployment between DH and I. It's so very hard. I would have a talk with your DD because it might keep her from worrying from what she doesn't know and fear of the unknown. Hugs to you.

My husband's whole family also lives in coal country (southwest VA and far southeastern KY) and were seriously impacted by the changing economy over the years. I understand how hard it is and I hope that you are able to find some solutions. Wishing you all the best.

Honey, I am so sorry.
I am from a small town originally, and I completely get what you are saying. ((hugs)) Great job on getting into Nursing School. Just try to stick it out and keep positive.

Thank you all so much I have explained to DD and she understand that we will be moving eventually and why; but the collections letters that show up every few days, mine and Dh's conversations about how long/ how much etc. are what I try to keep from her knowledge. I just don't want her to dwell on it.

I'm so sorry you are going through this situation, sending every possible good thought and vibe your way.
I can guess how difficult things are for you now - the economy of this area was based on coal and had the very same problems that you are going through now for the very same reasons, years ago. It's not much consolation to you now I know but there will be light at the end of the tunnel and things will improve eventually as they did here!
I hope you get the miracle you need to be able to keep your house and if not, that you are able to find a rental that you love at a price good for you. Also, that it won't be long before your husband's knee is sorted and he has a good and quick recovery.
Sending all best wishes to you and your family and lots of *big hugs*!

(((Hugs))) Stephanie. Prayers and positive thoughts going up for you, your DH and your DD. I can't imagine how stressful things feel right now. I'm a KY native and my paternal grandfather was a coal miner in a small town...I can totally relate to what you're saying about the surrounding area...when things like that hit, they hit hard.

Hang in there and just be open and honest with your DD. My BIL and MIL/FIL lost their homes recently in the real estate bust here in Southern CA. BIL has 6 kids and is a single dad (mom walked out on them). He just takes it day by day and I know you can do it too! Can you declare bankruptcy to keep the creditors at bay or would that create more problems than it would solve? (HUGS)

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this situation. We're in coal country too, and although we haven't been hit as hard as Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, there are still a lot of people out of work. We're feeling the secondary impact as stores and other businesses close too. Not sure which state you're in, but if you are in Kentucky, have you checked into the Unemployment Bridge Program and other foreclosure assistance programs? Has your DH been tested for CWP to see if he qualifies for any type of benefits?

Sending positive wishes to you and your family! Try to stay strong and be as honest with your daughter as you're comfortable with. As long as she knows you are all in this together, she will be fine. Kids are resilient; it's just hard to remember this while in the midst of the storm. And I hope you get to keep your dogs with you. They are amazing comfort-givers!!
