I can't say I'm excited, but I will join in with you ladies. I feel I really need to kick the habit. I get headaches every afternoon and have that fuzzy brain feeling all the time. I'm also trying to lose 40 pounds and I constantly crave sweets and carbs. From what I've read, my Diet Coke addiction is probably the cause of all of this. I love tea, so I can substitute that, but I also love the fizz and the bubbles of soda, so I need to find some good substitutes for that. This has been something I have wanted to do for quite some time, so I may as well go for it when I have a support group. Yikes! I'm scared!

I don't think it is the fizz for me. For me it is the cup, the ice, the straw...the experience. I think I will stop at Sonic today for a bag of ice and break out the Tervis.

Just wanted to chime in and say you guys can do this! I posted this on the other thread...
Hang in there through the first few days/weeks. It will get easier. The bonus for me was weight loss and feeling so much better...less sluggish, achy, and tired. I went completely cold turkey and I think that was beneficial for me. If I have a little bit, it just makes me crave more.

This has been some of the toughest for me. The times I associate the soda with the experience. A few months ago, I was going to grab Sonic for lunch while running errands. Then, I realized I couldn't have any of the fun drinks and it lost its appeal. I was not a happy camper. However, I know that I need to have a hard line, absolutely no soda. It is too much of a slippery slope otherwise.

I'm with you guys! I'm already in the process and down to one can of Pepsi Throwback with one can of ginger ale to replace my lunch Pepsi, a day. (I started doing this about two weeks ago) I've been drinking as much soda as I wanted/anytime I wanted, since I was a kid. For about 35 years. At the height of MY addiction, I was drinking two red bulls and at least a 2 liter of regular Pepsi or more, every day for a couple years. ( I worked in a convienience store at the time. Easy access.) I am going on a two week vacation with my family to Alaska in September and I want to look good in the pics. I know this will be the easiest way for me to lose weight. I hate this bloatd feeling in my midsection and puffiness in my face. Five or six years ago, I gave it up and after six weeks, I made an appt. with my Dr. because I thought I was dying. I forget my symptoms, but, I left that appointment with the Dr.'s instructions to get a pepsi on the way home and if my symptoms went away, it was still caffeine withdrawl and how MY body handled it. I can't/won't drink diet soda due to the tingling feeling I get on my head. There's a little area on my scalp, I think it's on the right side, that bothered me. I finally figured out that it came and went with my consumption of Diet drinks. So, no nutrasweet for me for the past 8 years or so. This little 12 fl. oz. can of Pepsi Throwback is my only source of caffeine. I'm 44 years old and have never liked coffee. I like my white teeth and my cold carbonation. ![:2thumbsup:](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/zKsqKGInldFvtmx415J3.jpg) I tried seltzer water and even though it's not, tasted too salty for me, but sometimes, I am unable to finish my pepsi because it's too sweet... I have two cans left. LET'S DO THIS GIRLS!!!!!!! ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/U60p50mxzUNFaJHP0XeB.jpg)

What do you all think about at least all taking a proper 'before' pic to share later with our proud 'after' pics?

What do you all think about at least all taking a proper 'before' pic to share later with our proud 'after' pics? Funny you say this. I took a selfie with my ds at the grocery the other day. It was well past noon and my face looked so puffy! That is when the seed was planted to give it up.

I may join you in Sept.! We go to the beach for 4 weeks and I already bought some soda. And I love walking across the street to Sheetz for a fountain drink Diet Coke and Washington Post, then drinking it on the beach. But even if they say diet soda makes you gain weight, I won't. We are oceanfront and on the 3rd floor so I am constantly running up to the condo to the bathroom after drinking a medium soda! And I always take the stairs (fear of elevators).
But I will be happily reading your success stories! Congratulations to all of you giving up soda and sugary drinks!

I had my last coke last Thursday and surprisingly, it hasn't been awful. I've replaced it with decaf tea and lots of water. So far, no headache which surprised me. Now we will see what happens when school starts. I'm not a coffee drinker, nor am I a morning person. That coke was my wake-up for the day.

I'll also be cheering ya'll on! In 2009 I started a 'lifestyle change' at that time I was up to 3 to 4 cans of Pepsi per day. I started with Sparkpeople and their quickstart program of making a 2week commitment of stopping cold turkey. Then I started having one 'every now and then' (it was harder in the beginning to not feel dependent on pepsi for stressful moments) ...and before I knew it, it became about once a month.
And I cannot tell you the last time I had one, and it was probably only part of a can...as the taste is too sweet for me now. I think that is the good part, after a while, your tastebuds and body rejects it... whenever I did indulge the heartburn/gurgling from my tummy let me know my body does not like this.
I substituted with hot and cold tea for the caffeine. And Ginger ale for the bubbles. (but not very often)
About a month ago, after a scare ...had the caffeine jitters so bad, I thought I was having a heart attack. I went on a caffeine detox...and have not had any tea for the past 2 weeks. It was about 5 to 6 days of some pretty bad headaches, but gotta say, it has been a revelation as I have never felt better and more clear headed as I have these past 2 weeks. (Not saying I have no caffeine, as I still have dark chocolate)

I could give it up now, but I'll just start up again when school starts. The PM caffeine is too necessary for me to get thorough my afternoon classes!

I gave up Coke 2 years ago the week after Mother's Day. When it comes to soda, Coke was my weakness. I would stop to buy a 20oz, but then see the liter was only .20-.30 more so I would get that. I still allowed myself to drink other sodas. Like others had mentioned, it was the carbonation I crave/craved. The last nine months, I have been trying hard to cut back on all soda and have been pretty successful. My $1 drinks at McD's are nowunsweetened tea. I have learned that if I crave a soda, it usually means I am dehydrated. Sonic Cherry limeades were another weakness but all it took was realizing how much sugar was in them to cut the route 44s out.

I have tried to stop many times but always fell off the wagon. The biggest thing for me is the headaches I get and I'm extra bitchy.

This is so exciting!
I wish you all the best of luck and I'll be here to get/give support as well.
I expected it to be so horrible when I stopped. It really wasn't. There are many alternatives (especially if you are like me and you miss the fizz) and if you just put those in place it makes it all the easier to transition away from soda.
We have to remember that there are many reasons why soda is bad. It's basically a can full of chemicals. There is no nutritional value. Then you have the dangerous sweetener in the diet sodas. Just bad all around.
I found myself missing the 'cola' taste, so I found a brand of organic cola (Veri Organic) and I tried it. It was delicious and it gave me that cola flavor. And its all natural. It was expensive but I got a four pack on sale so I don't feel so bad...lol.
I need to get a new cartridge for my SodaStream - that'll save me a bundle.
Oh - and for those who want to use seltzer but really cant get used to it - Skinny Girl makes a water enhancer with Stevia - and the White Cherry is delicious! (eta: so far I've only found it at Wal Mart)

My vice is Vanilla Coke. I have not had one since May 5th. I hasn't been too bad, I do still miss it, but am doing well. I have lost about 12 pounds so far, and am very happy about that.
All that to say, "I am in!!"

I used to drink 2-4 cans of Diet Coke a day over 3 years ago - switched over to Iced Tea - unsweetened and that satisfies me. I could probably drink decaf but the caffeine doesn't bother me even right before bed. I've tried a few sips here or there but I just don't like the taste of soda anymore!
Best of luck to you all!

I quit drinking soda 4 weeks ago and I definitely have more energy. There are times when I instinctively go the fridge to get a soda and think to myself, "what the heck am I going to drink." LOL. I don't drink juice and my doctor told me I had to give up carbonated drinks. So usually I just fill up my glass with water and a slice or lemon or lime.
What was strange about the whole process was when I was still drinking soda, I would get horrible headaches. Every single day. Once I quit, no more headaches, not even from the caffeine withdrawl. I'm thinking it was from the aspartame.
Good luck ladies. You can do it!

Well I just checked my fridge and I only have 3 600 ml bottles that will be gone by the end of the night, I plan to take my last diet coke tonight while watching a movie. I already have some infused water chilling, tons of ice and some club soda. I swear I feel like I´m loosing my mind, is so stupid to feel emotional over a freaking soda, I´m going to miss it so much, specially when I´m stressed. But this is it, I´m done with it. Oh I´ll stock on advil or excedrin cause I know I´ll get the headaches.

I turned 45 last summer and in a bid to be healthier I cut my diet coke intake in about half. I now limit myself to 4 cans a day.
I'd love to cut it back further, but currently i'm doing the most horrific math class (any math class is horrific imo...) So I cannot fathom cutting out even an ounce of my beloved diet coke at this point, lol!

I don't think I can make the switch to coffee. I wish I could, it would be cheaper. I don't love doing the 5 hour energy but if it's a half bottle once on awhile it shouldn't be too bad. I tried the mio energy drops that you add to water. It either didn't help OR made me jittery. I haven't found a happy medium.

So to give you a little more food for thought about quitting. One regular 20 ounce bottle of Coke contains 22 packets of sugar. 22!!! Can you imagine sitting down and eating 22 packets of sugar? I can't and I love sugar. Now multiply that by how many of those bottles you can drink a day. It's truly insane!

jenjie: "What do you do for caffeine? That's my issue. I don't, won't drink coffee, it tastes nasty to me. I use either soda or half of a 5 hour energy. Not all the time but there are times I need it." NOTHING. That's why I said to use Excedrin while you're coming off of caffeine. The only caffeine I get is in chocolate occasionally, and in my migraine meds when I need it. That's it. You'd be surprised at how much energy I have (even more than heavy coffee drinkers).
ETA: I'm proud of you all for stopping and I'm here for any advice. Together with my dieting/nutritonal consulting + doing this on my own, I'm fully aware of the pros and cons! I wish that everyone stopping it right now could take a bone density test now (it's simple!) and then do another one a few months after you've quit, just to see the difference. You'd be amazed!!!!!!!!!

When I was pregnant I quit drinking soda. I cut down over the course of about a week. I'm going to figure ok how many cans I have left at home and go from there, most likely cutting out half every few days.
