i've seen so many people say "TKAM is my all-time favorite book"
if it is - may i ask why?
and if it is - are you an avid reader?
did you read it as a student or an adult - or maybe both
are you going to read TSAW?
TKAM is a great book
but not even close to my all-time favorite
i have a couple theories of my own as to why people might feel so fervently about it
but i'll leave that until i get some replies

No, it isn't. I read it the one time for required reading and that was enough.

No, it isn't. I read it the one time for required reading and that was enough. That. I'm kind of tired of hearing about it, frankly.

It's good, but not one of my favorites. I enjoyed it in high school and I enjoyed re-reading it when my son was assigned it a few years ago. I just finished Go Set a Watchman and was not scarred by it like so many seem to fear.

I did not like it when I had to read it in high school. So, no, not a favorite. I am considering reading it again to see what I think from an adult perspective.

Never read it.
Daughter did in school and she said she liked it. Is it her favorite? no.

Yes. I'd definitely put this book in a favorites pile. It's a compelling story, it gives an accuarte window into the time period and locale, and it's well written/characters are well thought out. But really it makes it in my favorites pile because I like the story.

Can't remember reading it in school. Read it a couple of years ago. I thought it was quite good, but definitely not on my list of all time faves. May get around to reading the prequel but not in any rush.

It's one of my favorites...I read it for the first time as a teenager but not for school...I love it because it's beautifully written and funny and thoughtful. I've re-read it many times since my first time. And yes, I am an avid reader, have been since I was small. Not really interested in reading Go Set a Watchman.

Nope. I'm an avid reader of all types of fiction, but read TKAM in 8th grade and didn't care much for it.

Yes. Both the book and the movie.
I read it for the first time in high school. I've always been an avid reader, so it wasn't the first book I ever loved. It really touched me and had an impact on me, though. The lessons, the language, the symbolism, the characters....I loved everything about it. One of the shelves in my bookcases has all of my favorite books on it, and TKAM is definitely on that shelf.

I read it in Grade 11 English class. It was a good read, but nothing that exciting. I wouldn't read it again. I don't really understand all the hype about it, but it was a good read. (Better than Shakespeare. I never, ever, ever passed a Shakespeare test in my life...)

It's my absolute favorite book ever.
In HS, I read exactly two books: To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby. How many books I was supposed to read, who knows...but I especially LOVE TKAM, and have always said I would easily name my child Atticus because he was such a strong character to me.
I'm clearly rethinking that now...

I read It first as a teenager and then again last year for book club (we do a classic twice a year). While I really enjoy it, it is not in my top ten.

It is my all-time favorite book and I would consider myself an avid reader. I love the language. I think it is very well written. The theme always touched me and I think that Miss Lee captured the emotions and feelings of childhood beautifully through Scout's eyes. I read it in high school and fell in love with it. I have read it at least 10 times since and I will read the prequel. In all of my readings, I never saw Atticus as a hero because he was open minded in a time when it was not the norm. I saw him as a hero because he loved the law and did was he was asked to do to uphold it. I don't think the new book will change that for me even if I don't admire him as much.

DH and I used to joke about the senior blurbs at graduation time in our local paper. It seemed like 75% of the kids said that TKAM was their favorite book. That seems to me to be more of a reflection of their English teacher than the book itself. Everyone wants a hero who stands for the right cause. Kids relate to that.
I myself like TKAM. I'm currently reading GSAW. So far, so good. But, I will say that I am originally from the Deep South. I know and recognize these characters and their flaws. I do not think anyone should really compare the new move to the old. Mark Twain told similar stories with different points of view. Really, that's creative writing, and not so easy. Harper Lee is proving, I think, that she is a good writer, and that people are complicated. Isn't learning more about our parents and accepting their flaws a universal story?

In fact I bought it not too long ago because I wanted to try it after seeing so many people say it's the best book ever. I haven't really gotten into it yet though.

I never read it...and I took 4 yrs of english in 3 yrs...heavy on literature, philosophy, poetry. maybe it was because both my fav english teachers were from the south...it was not on their must read lists. we did read shakespeare, the great gatsby...and I read stuff like moby dick, war and peace, and madame bovary. maybe it was living in seattle..and no one I knew read it in school...

Whenever I am asked what my favorite book is, I always say TKAM. I read it for the first time in 3rd grade, about Scout's age. While I didn't understand what the trial was about, the story had a huge effect on my worldview. It shaped my views about justice, acceptance, and equality. Each time I read it, I get something different from it.

Loved both the book and the movie and I'm pretty sure I probably saw the movie first on television as it originally aired in 1968 and I don't think I read the book until high school in the 70's.
I'm an avid reader who hasn't made the decision on whether I'll be reading the new book or not, but not because of what the everyone is talking about regarding the character of Atticus Finch but because I'm very suspect on WHY this book is being released now when the author is really unable to make those kinds of decisions herself and that after she was duped into signing the copyright to TKAM to your agent, I'm not sure I want to support it. The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I only read it a few years ago - after a 'favorite book" thread here. I do really love it. I love stories of people who believe in doing the right thing no matter the circumstance. I love stories of justice and acceptance.
My daughter is 13 and I really want her to read it, but I don't know if I would have loved it at 13 as much as I did at 45. She probably won't choose it on her own, but I don't want her to read it because of an assignment either. Such a dilemma.
