I thought about ditching cable a couple of years back. Like you, I couldn't imagine life without my DVR. I found DVRs available for purchase on Amazon for around $100. It's my understanding you program them similarly to a VCR back in the day. So while not perfect, it's certainly workable.
In the end when I called to cancel they sweetened the deal so much for me that it became silly to cancel. I would have paid $64.99+modem rental for internet only and they gave me tv, internet and phone for $79 for a year. That year's long gone and I do pay more now, but I also make more now so it's not as big of an issue and a luxury that currently I don't mind paying for.

I want to cut the cord too! I will have DS look at the reddit and put him in charge of making it work.
Now that HBO is available off cable, my only hold up is Doctor Who. Tell me I can wait another year for the new episodes. I'm starting to think I can.

What do you all do about sports? I watch hardly any tv. I schedule 2 shows on the DVR, Big Bang and SVU. Both are out for the summer so I never even turn on the tv. My kids mainly watch Netflix but they do occasionally watch cartoons. Dh though, he watches sports every day. It's all he watches almost. I asked him about getting rid of cable and he said no because he would never be able to watch all the sports he likes to watch. We pay $200 a month also and I feel like its such a huge rip off so we can watch baseball, football and Nascar. DH and I just had the exact same conversation yesterday! Except the sports are NFL, NBA, Tennis, gold, baseball, soccer, etc... Looking forward to seeing experiences on this one!

This is a timely thread, because our Verizon FIOS 2-year contract just ended. I choke on the amount our bill is every month, and now it's going up! The bundle price for cable, internet and phone was about $140, and HD, DVR, HBO, etc. adds about $100 on top of that. I was on the phone yesterday and could not get anyone to tell me what my exact contract price will be moving forward. I'm calling their cancellation department today.
I really like the quality of FIOS, and I'm a big TV watcher (HBO, Showtime, Bravo, Angels baseball for the most part), but it sounds like I might be able to patch together the channels I like best with separate subscriptions. For baseball, we could subscribe to MLB online and stream the games that way. I'm not sure how much it will save, since we need to keep internet and phone, but it's worth investigating.

One way to lower the bill is to change providers every time the contract is up as the other company gives nee customers deals.

I don't know how so many of you are getting such cheap cable prices. To get internet and cable with anything worth paying for (sports), we are forced into the highest plans. I think they start at 179.00 and go up from there. That is with just the major HD channels and not anything premium. If I could get sports and bravo/discovery, etc for less than $130 a month I would keep the cable. Internet is the biggest rip off. I would love to have Google fiber move into the neighborhood. Oh how I would love that!

One way to lower the bill is to change providers every time the contract is up as the other company gives nee customers deals. Our cable company has a monopoly. No other companies to flip to around here. We have one family who owns the newspaper and the cable. It is a joke!...and a crime, if you ask me. No one asks me.

For those of you who stream only, do you not have a limit on your internet? We have satelitte internet and we have a monthy allowance. If we streamed everything, I think we would go over. Our limit is 250 GB. We have never gone over. We rarely stream anything during the day - only in the evenings, and we do watch some shows through our antenna. I just checked our usage for the last three months - the most we used in a month was 82GB.

We have never had it, the big reason is I refused to pay for commercials and hsn.
There are a lot of free sites to watch cable shows.
