The show was on addiction. There was one segment where they had 10 adults in a room. They were there to evaluate a pilot for a TV show. All the adults were asked to put their cell phones on a front table because there was no cell phone in this room. The Brain Games staff then set up the TV but they were having technical difficulties. (This was part of the plan) They left the room to see if the could find someone to "fix" the problem.
The 10 adults were left in the room. The BG staff was watching behind a one way glass to see who/how many would break the No Cell Phone Rule. When it was all done 80% had used their phones.
Now this is the part that got me. While sitting in that room NO ONE talked to anyone. They all sat there squirming and looked very uncomfortable. I would have tried to strike up a conversation with the people sitting near me. Seriously is this what we are coming to? No one will strike up a conversation with real people any more? Heck I have been known to go to Target when I don't really need to so I can at least talk to the cashier for a few minutes. Sad I know, but I can go long periods of time when I don't talk to anyone outside of DH and DD.
I admit I do check my phone more than I should but when I am with someone the only time I check it is when I don't have DD (not that I have to worry I get so few calls from anyone). I check and if it doesn't involve her I ignore it. They can leave me a message and I don't have texting so I don't have that.
Have others noticed this more? I know there are some people who do not want to have random conversations with strangers but I still try.

I probably would have tried to make polite conversation but if it was awkward I definitely would have grabbed my phone.
In my head the test hadn't started so I wouldn't have been breaking the rules. And I don't consider myself addicted to my phone.

First off, we LOVE this show at my house. I watch it with my grandson as often as humanly possible! And second, sadly, I would not have spoken to anyone in the room, either I am painfully shy around strangers and try to make myself as unnoticeable as possible. I am terrible at small talk and truly prefer to be left alone in a situation like that.

I would probably have tried to start a conversation, and I would not have used my phone. It bothers me when people are so connected to their phones. I work with people who bring them to meetings, etc. - drives me crazy. I want to go back to the days when people got a busy signal if I was on the phone, and if I wasn't home, they left me a message and I called htem back. I hate being connectedf 24-7.

I'm an introvert but I know I would have made eye contact and started a conversation or spoke to someone. I wouldn't have a problem with the cell phone because I don't have one. Gasp!

I haven't seen this show but it sounds like fun. I am pretty shy so I don't start too many conversations. And I am more likely to grab my book rather than my phone in such a group situation.

I said the exact same thing to DH...why is no one talking to each other? I almost wonder if they told them not to and conveniently left that part out. It looked very odd to me. And BTW, I'm always have my cell phone on me and ready to whip out, but if I was told not to check it for a period of time I would have no problem complying. That one had my scratching my head.
