Its hard not to judge but in the daily stress and over-scheduling of our lives I understand why some of this has happened. I don't like it and feel horrible everytime I hear about another child losing their life.
We live in Arizona - lots and lots of pools. Every year you hear about children being found in the pool. Every year the local news goes out of its way to educate people on supervising children near the water. Every year more and more children are found dead or near death in the pool. The neighbors behind us (prior to us moving last year) had this happen to them. They have 3 children, a 9 yr old, a 6 yr old and a 2 1/2 yr old at the time this happened. They have a secure-self-latching gate on the fence that surrounds their pool. The kids were outside playing tag. The oldest 2 were running from each other, the youngest trying to keep up and "be one of the boys". At one point the oldest runs into the pool area, the gate closing behind him. The second oldest follows him...they chase each other around and then run out. Both assuming that the gate will self latch like it always does. Except this time, it didn't quite latch and the little one was able to open the gate and go in.
The 2 oldest boys had run into the house. Very soon thereafter the Mom asks the oldest 2, "where is your brother" and they all realize he is outside alone.
The father found him in the pool. The father is an ex-air force captain and knew CPR. He jumped into pool, grabbed the child and began CPR and mouth-to-mouth while the Mom is calling 911.
I arrived home from work just at the same time the helicopter was landing in our greenbelt area and drove by the house to see them bringing the boy out on the stretcher while a EMT was doing CPR.
We heard about the details on the news that night. The boy was fortunate to survive - they stated that the father being able to do CPR and mouth to mouth so quickly is what saved his life. The child has no lasting side effects from the ordeal - thank goodness.
The family at our annual developments block party handed out goody bags on pool safety to everyone that attended and told their story. I'm so glad it was a happy ending. The life flight crew and EMT's that came that day were there to talk to all the children and parents as well.
This happened so quickly and were very attentive parents. I believe it can happen to anyone.
