For the last year or so I've been making popcorn about once a week, for school snacks. I make it the old-fashioned way, in a pot, with oil. It's really very easy.
To make it a bit healthier, though, I'm considering getting an air popper. I'll still add a bit of butter and salt when it's ready, but at least it won't have the oil.
I'm also assuming it will be a little quicker and easier.
Anyone who has/had one (or has talked to someone who has one) - what do you think? Is it worth the space in my small kitchen?

Just put popcorn in a brown lunch bag, roll over the top a few times, and PPP in your microwave. No oil needed, no air popper needed.

If you want super healthy get a hot air popper but if you want it to taste good and be quick, don't buy one. The only way it tastes good with one of those is with melted butter and i'm sure if we measured the butter we would probably be shocked at just how bad it is for us.

We have an air popper, but lately my husband has been doing it over the stove with coconut oil. I need to find him an old fashioned type popper for a gift some day. He loves his popcorn. I am just fine with doing it with the air popper, but apparently to him the taste isn't the same.

I love popcorn and when I make it with the air popper, it always seems chewy! I agree, it's a bit chewier, almost rubbery. And it's super dry so you need twice as much butter. I prefer doing it on the stove with oil. Haven't tried it with Coconut Oil yet but I hear it's delicious. |

We just dug our old air popper out of the basement and tried it. Which is when I remembered why we never used it -- it shoots the popcorn halfway across the room.  You have to stand there and try to block the popcorn with the bowl... very inconvenient. lol. We gave it to Goodwill and now use the brown paper bag method. Although, I need to try it on the stovetop with coconut oil. |

We have a Whirly Pop that we have had for probably 18 years. We use it multiple times a week and it only uses a very small amount of oil to pop the popcorn. We usually add a small amount of butter and salt but it is nit really needed.

I LOVE popcorn, absolutely love it. I pop mine on the stove with either Olive Oil or coconut oil. It reminds me of my childhood when my mom would make it. She used solid crisco which was so good back then. But now I make it healthier.
I do not like air poppers.

I have an air popper and have never popped popcorn on the cooker top. The kernels do fly everywhere as a PP mentioned. I stand with a tea towel acting as guard so the popcorn falls in to the bowl and that works fine to control it. You probably add more oil after than you would putting a little oil in the bottom of a pan which would then pretty evenly coat the unpopped kernels. We like olive oil and black pepper flavour popcorn. As the extra virgin olive oil is a health food, I have no concerns using as much oil as needed or wanted.

I had an air popper, got rid of it, regretted it, and bought a replacement. I like the little thing because it's so simple, but I like dry popcorn anyway. I don't burn any this way, and for the most part, unpopped kernels stay inside the hopper and out of the bowl. I could eat popcorn for every meal; I just love it! I've heard good things about the West Bend ones that look kind of round, but mine's some little off-brand upright one. It doesn't take up much space, and fortunately, mine requires no babysitting like some of the others do.
I also have a Whirly Pop which does make better tasting popcorn. Lately, I've been using olive oil with it, just a drizzle, and it's really tasty that way, even better with salt & pepper.

If you have limited space, I wouldn't get an air popper. I use my air-popper only for making caramel corn. It's too dry for just eating.
Knew someone who used to spray air-popped corn with a weight-watchers aerosol butter spray so that the salt would stick. Tasted like chemicals to me.

We LOVE our whirly pop thingy. It makes the best popcorn ever. The only downside is the size in storing it in our small kitchen. I try to steer away from single use appliances.

I love my air popper, but I always add some melted butter and salt. Not a healthy snack by any means. I used to make popcorn on the stove, but I personally like the taste of the airpopped popcorn much better. I have that red, vintage looking one, and flying popcorn hasn't been a big problem.

Whirly Pop all the way. Once heated and add popcorn, I think it's quicker than the microwave and air popper. But tastes so good. As mentioned above, little oil needed.

I find air-popped to be too dry and require too much butter. I do mine in a pan on the stovetop and it's delicious! I use 2-3 tablespoons of oil with 1/2 cup popcorn, and I add som salt to the oil also. We love popcorn here!

I do use a lid but it needs to be vented so I put it on the pan in a slant. |

I read that you shouldn't put paper bags in the microwave. Something about chemicals leaching? Anyway we have tried it with a glass bowl and it worked pretty well. At least as well as it did with the paper bag. We use an air popper too though.
If you google microwave popcorn in a bowl or something like that there should be a few sites that have details.
eta: I have a whirly pop but I hate washing it.
