I've become a bit of a nutter about BBC television shows. About a week ago, I discovered "The Last Tango in Halifax."
Oh my word but I adore this show. Another BBC television show that I just adore and can't get enough of. I found it when it popped up on our local PBS station last week. My TIVO auto recorded it. I started to watch it but then realized it was an episode pretty far into the series. I was so excited when I found it on Netflix. And now I'm binge watching.
For those of you who know the show, I am rather tired of John and I wish Gillian would get a grip and stop making stupid choices.
LOL!

I loved Last Tango in Halifax as well!
The writer has another show- "Happy Valley"- that is great too. Sarah Lancashire is the star as well. It's much darker than Halifax, but we loved it. (If you search on Netflix, it is NOT the one about Jerry Sandusky with the same title.)
I just started watching "The Paradise" last night. Also stars Sarah Lancashire.
Foyle's War and Call the Midwife, if you haven't seen those, I'd highly recommend.

*hanging my head in shame*
I have yet to see a British TV show. Not even Downtown Abbey.

OH mom! You are so, so, so cheating yourself!
I don't know even where to suggest you start! I take that back. Start with this show.
Thanks for the suggestions gorgeouskid! The only "bad" thing about BBC television series are is that they are much shorter than what we're used to here in the states. Well, actually...more and more US series are starting to have very short scenes with less and less episodes. Is there any show anymore that has more than 10-12 episodes a season?

Loved Last Tango in Halifax. I'm watching The Crimson Field lately. It isn't my favorite but is still very good. I find that I'm watching mostly PBS lately as most of the programs on regular TV are really bad.

I've binge-watched 4 episodes of Poldark so far (my BF called it 'Poledancer' lol!!) and am depressed that it's only 8 episodes total. I can't decide whether to save them and binge-watch the rest all at once, or watch them one at a time, slowly, to drag it out as long as possible... decisions, decisions!! I've watched two episodes of The Crimson Field so far; I wasn't sure about it after the first episode, but the second one was better, so I'm going to continue. (I find the accents on this show a bit more difficult to decipher; I think that's part of it. Well, and there's no character like Aidan Turner to look at! ) Now that Justified is over with, we don't even watch any scripted shows on regular television any more... it's all pretty bad, in my opinion.

I think the only British show I've seen is Call the Midwife. I've tried watching Doctor Who. I've apparently seen a lot of spin off shows made in the U.S. but based on British shows. I had no idea until I read threads here.

BBC seems to be quality over quantity.
The only show I didn't "get" was Father Ted.
Shows I love: Red Dwarf (space comedy) Coupling (the British version of Friends) IT Crowd (geek humor) Black Books (the world's most grumpy anti-social person owns a bookstore)
Except Red Dwarf which is still going the rest were cancelled too soon!

Love Last Tango--hope you went back and got the beginning of the story.
IT Crowd--HILARIOUS!! Too bad it ended Vicar of Dibley --very funny
...and others over the years. An OLD, OLD series was the Duchess of Duke Street......Upstairs, Downstairs.......

I also really like Masterpiece Mystery; Poirot and Inspector Morse... haven't gotten into any of them since the actor who played Inspector Morse passed away, but will still watch occasionally.

There is also a show called Moon Boy that someone recommended, I think it has Roy from IT Crowd in it. I haven't watched it because it's not on amazon prime...

Inspector Lewis and Endeavor are actually both very good, also. I had actually caught Endeavor accidentally, on PBS a year or so ago, and then went to watch the others. (I cried at the end of Morse, though ) I'm still mad at Netflix for taking off MI-5, that's probably one of my favorites. (particularly the earlier series with Matthew McFayden. Swoon!) Grace on Crimson Fields was Ros on that show. I'm working my way through Foyle's War now, just finished up Series 2. I didn't know Red Dwarf was still on. Is it the same one from the 90's, or a newer version? Off to check it out.

Um, the My Hero show was pretty awful, especially after the original actor left. But that might be the exception that proves the rule!

I love Inspector Morse - that Jag used to live at a house at the front of my neighborhood. It used to be a standing joke with our friends to see if we could get in a scene randomly. I think my husband managed it while he was at work but couldn't tell you which one now.

I freely admit I have no idea of the ins and outs of the different British tv stations-- I just know they're British, and they're really good, lol!
eta: and I usually only watch British tv when it's aired on PBS; I actually forget that our cable lineup now includes the BBC America channel.

Thanks....I want to check out Last Tango. I thought it was a movie and that I had already seen it.
I love BBC shows, too. I am watching Rosemary and Thyme now. I really enjoy the scenery as well as the stories.

I love British shows. I have loved them all my life -growing up in Denmark we get quite a few British shows, now I have to rely on Netflix and PBS. My absolute favorite show growing up was Dick Turpin. I just managed to get season 1 and can't wait to start watching it again. I really wish Netflix would get Heartbeat and The Royal, as I only seen a handful of episodes when I am visiting Denmark and they are always good.
