I've never named a car, but don't care if others do.

I had a George and an Oscar, but not because I thought they were a part of the family or anything. They just happened to get names. I called them that only occasionally. However, I did feel bad when I traded George in for Oscar. In my creative mind, he thought he was playing with new friends, but would soon realize I had left him behind. Poor George. I am sure he cried.

DH named my Honda CRV "Fifi" because she is white and he feels she is prissy and princessy and doesn't earn her keep. He totally meant it as an insult. I don't drive her in inclement weather so he feels she's pampered. She has a tow package and Yakima rack and is great for me tooling around with the kiddos or driving cross country. But I don't mind the rough ride as much as he does, as she rides just like the Acura Integra she replaced so I'm used to it.
I named his big luxed out Envoy "Bertha". A much better road trip car, I still feel more comfortable in my Fifster as he calls her. He even gave her a French accent. So silly.
Of all the cars we've ever owned, these are the only ones that have been named.

Cars are metal and plastic and I have to be honest, I think naming them, calling them 'she' etc is daft. It's just for fun..nothing wrong with a little fun. I did assume people do it for fun, yes.

My car being named depends on whether I like it or not.
If I like it, it's Betsy. This name is given only to the cars I really like. My current car is so named - she's a cute little bubble car.
If I don't like it, but have to get because it's the one that's available at the time for the right price, it doesn't get a name.

Every vehicle I've ever owned has had a mascot and name.
a camaro was Radar and had a teddy bear in it dressed like the Red Baron
a van van that was ocean coloured had a dolphin and was Marina
my corvette had a turtle and was Speedy
its a luck/fate thing. Superstition.

My car is Kiki, dh's car is Kira. My youngest son has named his car Grizwald. Our other son got a new car recently and not figured out a name for it yet.
We name a lot of things. For instance our Kindles are Sybil and Chuck. Our i-pad is George.
It is just something fun we like to do.

I have to agree with gar. My cars have no sentimental value to me at all, they are just a way of getting from A to B. I have never named any of my cars, although I did bestow the name “You &$#@ing piece of $h!t” on more than one occasion to my Nissan Exa. My DD will be buying her first car later this year. She had her eye on a Ford Fiesta and she wants to name it Lester – Lester the Fiesta. But she thinks there’s some sort of “rule” that a car has to have a female name.

My first car was Tony. Haven't named the rest. I learned it could be embarrassing. In the eighties I'm stopped in city traffic and a kid barrels out of a parking lot right into Tony. Tony is totaled.I had my young (16 months) son with me luckily in a good car seat and on the drivers side. He was unhurt but kept crying. The police were writing up the accident and DS was crying and said "Tony's hurt. Poor Tony. The police start scrambling around the car looking for "Tony". I got the crazy woman look when I explained.

The only one we ever named was a minivan called "Posey". For POS, or piece of shit. Because it was!

I have always named my cars. I had a little blue car that was a POS and it made a HORRIBLE noise so we called it Siren. I then got a big station wagon POS and IT made a horrible noise, so we called it Siren too. We joked that we just upgraded her, lol. I had a car with a bad paint job called Freckle, and a HUGE Delta '88 named Bertha. My last car had a split personality so she had two names- Blaze and Elanor.
My current car, a Mazda 5, is called Squeaks, but it took 6 months to figure out her name. We called it "undertermined gender car" for a long time because it really didn't have any personality at all, but then we discovered her after she hit a pothole.
My DH has a car named Ghost, and my son's car is Stormcaller.

My DH's short wheel base truck is named Stumpy. A friend of ours called the truck Stump as an insult since he had just bought a king cab long wheel base truck and Stump was so short.
DDs first car was a 10 year old hand me down 1984 4 door Buick Regal, my old car, her friends named the car Amy. Other daughter had an old Corolla she inherited from her older sister named Tallulah. Then there was a red Beetle name Lanabug, a Honda Element named "The Box".
No other cars have "earned" names. We have tried to name a few, but have not stuck.

Ours all have names but only two of them are regularly called by name - our Mini Cooper is Nimbus and Simon's 1978 Ford F-150 is Ol' Reliable. The mini-van is Silver; Dh's pickup is Workhorse and his Mustang is Traveller.

DH's first truck was called The Wonder Truck. Not sure why because it never seemed like anything but a problem to me. My first car was a little bright blue Mazda GLC hatchback. It didn't really have a name but it was a good runner and always reliable so we said the initials stood for Great Little Car. He always drives a truck and I've always had a car so usually we just go with "car" or "truck" to determine what we're driving when we go somewhere together.
For a very short time I owned a Pontiac Fiero with rear wheel drive. We live in MN where winter seems to last 3/4 of the year, it was really NOT a great car for winter driving. I'm more than sure I had given that piece of work a few "special" names at times!

Fun thread!
I am a dork that names cars...currently, my RAV4 is named Lady Blue because she's the prettiest blue and my BMW 330i is Charlotte because she's German, gorgeous and I named her that long before Princess Kate and Chelsea Clinton chose it.

I have a friend who does, but I generally don't. Another one of my friends christened my car Christine, after the Stephen King car because the stupid alarm seemed to go off randomly.
And near the end of its life, I referred to my first car as The Blue Beast, both because it was blue in colour, and due to the blue smoke it was spewing from the tailpipe.

For me, it started when I was married the last time. DH had a Caprice (the one from the other car thread that now has 300,000 miles on it). It was garaged for a bit while he used a work vehicle. It was in my way in the garage, and since it was large and gray and had a trunk, I started saying there was an elephant in the garage. So it became Elephant. My Explorer is Sam (because that's what came to me when I drove it home). DS1 had Frog (Frog got squished/totalled after 10 days, sniff) which was a green Beretta. That was followed for him by Camel (beige 4 door Taurus). That lasted 4 months before being totaled. He then got a maroon Taurus which I was specifically not allowed to name, but to me looked suspiciously like an Eggplant. DS2 got a red Explorer - Clifford, the big red dog (and yes, I bought him a stuffed Clifford). He replaced it with a new blue Jeep Wrangler--Big Blue. DS3 had a green Mystique - Iguana. EXDH, in addition to Elephant, has a new red Impala which he has named Rooster.
In many ways, Sam is a part of who I am. We have been together, mile after mile, for a long time and Sam rarely lets me down, and I take care of Sam. Yes, I know it's a vehicle - metal and plastic parts - but it's much more fun to enjoy these silly things.

My 2000 intrepid was named "ghetto gold". She was gold colored and in BAD shape..... Cracked windshield, broken trunk lock from it being punched, broken passenger door lock, peeling off clear coat, and rusting paint. When I traded her in, I got a cool $400. Ghetto gold's replacement is a silver charger. We call it "the silver bullet". I wanted "silver surfer" but got vetoed since it doesn't have a surf rack. It's MY car so I should be able to name it right? The sequoia is called "gas hog" for obvious reasons. Bette doesn't have a name but it does have a lucky duck that rides in the oh shit handle on the dash. The duck protects my DH from getting tickets. Lol

One of our cars affectionately gets called "piece of shit car" to the tune of the Adam Sandler song. Does that count? Otherwise we just name the voices that are our navigation systems...Lucy bosses me around!

My first car after I passed my test was a red Ford Fiesta (more rust than car). It was called Fred. Fred's gear box eventually collapsed and he was more rust than car. I've never named another car since other than referring to them as pieces of s*$t or junk etc!

DD has a Ford Edge named "Glory" - She's a huge Lady Gaga fan and named it after her 'Edge of Glory' song. Song gets stuck in my head a lot. . .
