So essentially you are the victim of a hit-and-run ? No, the driver who hit her stopped. But he was operating a vehicle without a license or proof of insurance or so he says and gave her a name and phone number. If the OP had time to post here, hopefully she had the opportunity to call the number and get his insurance information. If he gives it to her and admits fault she should have no problem.

Thanks for all the replies (& kind comments). I think I'm a nice person ( :)thanks again) - but there are a multitude of other reasons I didn't call the police at the scene
Years ago I slid thru a red light on icy roads and dinged an older lady's car rear end. I know I was wrong (I was going too fast to stop on ice). Similarly, neither vehicle was damaged and no one was hurt. We did exchange all the info, but she never did make a claim. This is what I mean about kharma.
I won't claim vehicle damages because (money aside), it would just be a big inconvenience to fix a little crack. Him not having his licence or insurance does bother me, so I will go file a police report after work.
Thank you, End of thread please.

Ack. In hindsight, you should have insisted he stay put until the police arrived. I hope the info you did get will serve to help you file a claim if necessary.
I was just rear-ended last week, for the 2nd time in 6 months. This time was just a bump like you describe (last time my right rear light assembly was crushed) but I'm still going to have to drop my car off for a couple of days because the paint is cracking. My body guy said it will continue to crack and then peel. The bumper will have to removed, sanded and repainted. I'd bet we're talking $1K.
Being the second time in 6 months, I knew a little better what to do. This time I didn't call the police (the last time we tried but the state police -- the accident occurred at the end of a ramp of a local interstate -- were tied up with like 6 other calls of much more serious accidents in the area). I just photographed everything: license, tag, damage, etc.
Good luck....it's such a pain even if it's seemingly minor.
ETA: In the last incident, the lack of a police report played no part in how the insurance company worked with me. It probably helps that the man who hit me confirmed my version of events to his insurance provider. I expect the same this time around.

reporting it will also help you if you have any neck pain. It might feel ok now but you might be really sore tomorrow.

I would have the back bumper at least inspected. If there is damage that is unseen, if you get hit on that bumper again you will not have adequate protection. (Kind of like once a car seat is in an accident it should be replaced; once a helmet takes a hit it should be replaced even if no damage is evident.)

I'm sorry that happened to you! Make sure to rest and don't hesitate to see a doctor if you feel worse tomorrow or the next day. I was in a fender bender a few years ago, waiting at a stoplight and the car behind me rammed into me so hard I was slammed into the car in front of me. I felt ok that first day, but the following day I could barely move my neck. Luckily the person who hit me had insurance, so everything was covered on their end. I ended up getting prescribed physical therapy for my neck and back.
I hope you feel better soon, it really stinks to have something like that happen when it isn't your fault. And to this day I STILL get nervous when I ever have to stop at the intersection of my accident.

So what was the point of this thread and what is the point of making a police report? You realize that if you do and this person was driving without a license - because he doesn't have one he can be arrested and fined for not having insurance. His operating a vehicle without a license or insurance should be a concern. You never know if he is a repeat drunk driver who had it suspended. For public safety, I hope you will take the time to report it.

Calling the Police after the fact shouldn't be a problem. If I was in the same situation I would not have called the Police at the time of the accident either since here they no longer respond to small accidents that do not involve property damage.

I would file a report. Go to the ER and call the police.

I just hope you are not hurt. I was rear ended almost four years ago. I did not know I was hurt until the next day. My bills continue to mount.

So you were rear-ended this morning before work, didn't call the police when it happened, and now you're going to wait until after work to even report it?
Don't you think the police are going to see how low a priority it was for you?

They may not respond to small accidents that do not involve property damage, but if you tell them that the other driver has no license or proof of insurance, I'm certain they'd send an officer right over.

At an accident always snap a photo of the VIN number. You can find it on the front left side of the dashboard.

Years ago, we were in a chain reaction fender bender. I was pregnant and my Dr wanted me to get to the hospital as soon as possible. The roads were terrible and there were accidents everywhere. We didn't have any visible damage and we knew it would take too long for an officer to respond to a property damage accident. We took all the information of the car that started the accident. We went to the police department the next day (it was too late to go by the time I got discharged several hours later). They told us that because we did not file the report when it happened that we couldn't do it. Basically, we were out of luck. Hope you have a better outcome!

yes, and report it to your insurance company immediately. I'm sure they can run the plate and get all the info needed to file a claim.

The police thing really depends on where you live - they wouldn't have come in my town over that. If there are no injuries, the police don't come for fender benders here. (My town size is about 65,000 people and we have plenty of police, it's just their policy.)
You can file online in many areas, and that's the extent of it. OP you might check that out - don't feel bad, you were probably shocked and maybe believed the wrong person.
You should file a report now to protect yourself - for all you know, that dolt did have insurance and a license and will tell his insurance company you hit him. Just try to file now and see what the deal is where you live.

Also for medical - because it happened during an accident, your insurance may not cover any of your costs either. They will typically deny and go after the insurance of the guy who hit you. So you might find out that your claim is denied well after you see a doc or the ER and then you have no way to file then.

Most definitely. You should have called the police on the spot. I am guessing he has neither a license nor insurance. I don't suppose you took a photo of him? Your car doesn't necessarily show a lot of damage but can still be quite expensive to repair. Good luck. I agree. I was rear ended last fall, and the lady who did it was very nice, apologized and gave me her information. Our cars looked fine, but we took it in to have it checked as we travel all the time. It was fine, but I felt better having her information. And my daughter knew her daughter (from dance) so I knew it was really her and she wasn't "scamming me". No cost to either of us, the dealer just checked it out.

Again I will say that there is a HUGE difference between the police not coming for a minor fender bender with no injuries when both drivers exchange all pertinent and required information.
When one driver has no driver's license OR proof of insurance, you're talking a completely different story. I would be surprised if ANY state would not send an officer to that kind of situation.
