Second 7/25 update:
She's been found. We just picked her up and brought her home.
Someone posted a pic of her in one of the FB groups I had posted in. The lady's neighbor found Xandra wandering down the middle of the road. How she didn't get hit by a car is beyond me. Because of the heat, she was really disoriented. A very kind man stopped and put her in his car. He took her home and got her cooled off, then treated her like his own. He and his wife had already decided to keep her if her owners couldn't be found, so we know she would have been well taken care of.
I'm so grateful for people who don't have to show such kindness but do anyway. Thank you all again for your prayers and positive thoughts.
7/25 Update:
We got home about an hour ago. It was a long, excruciating trip. We've driven around the neighborhood, calling for Alexandra (we call her Zandra). If only she hadn't gotten her collar off! It had all of our contact info, as well as our vet's.
She is not at any of the local animal shelters. So far we've gotten nothing on any of the FB pages I've posted on. DH is working on flyers right now to post all around the neighborhood. He drove most of the way home and is exhausted, but she is his 70-lb baby. He's not going to give up. DS and DD are going to knock on doors until it gets dark to ask if anyone has seen her.
Thank you for all of your prayers and positive thoughts. Keep them coming.
OP:
We're visiting my family in WV right now, leaving to go home tomorrow.
We had a young guy from our church stay at our house to keep an eye on things and take care of our dog. Today our girl Alexandra got out of the fenced yard. Apparently she managed to squeeze through the gate, leaving her collar behind. From what we can understand, the guy who mows our grass did not close the gate properly, and the housesitter didn't think to check it.
Whenever she's gotten out before, she's come home within an hour, or we've gone out looking and she's been found quickly. Our housesitter has been out looking since before noon and there's been no sign of her. One of our neighbors kept an eye out for her at home. We've called the local animal control and shelter to see if she's been found and taken there. I've posted her picture on several lost animal FB pages. She's very friendly and loves people, so it's possible she got into a vehicle with anyone. She's 12 years old and won't last long without water.
Please, if you have a prayer to spare, pray that she finds her way home. We're going to have a long, 12-hour drive tomorrow, worrying about her. I am just so sick over this. We haven't told the kids yet, but we will tomorrow morning if she hasn't come home.
