I was in my late teens (living in England at the time) when I read The Case of Mary Bell. It was about a girl in Newcastle (England) who had killed two little boys by strangling/choking them to death. I slept with the light on for weeks after reading it. She had the creepiest eyes I'd ever seen. I'll never read it again. Even O.J. Simpson's "If I Did It" wasn't as creepy as this, and I gave his book away to get it out of my house. (It was from the Dollar Tree, LOL.) I don't know what happened to the Mary Bell book, I never want to see it again.

Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me, about Ted Bundy. It was terrifying.

Pet Semetary, by Stephen King. I read it when I was a young girl (11-12?) and it scared the CRAP out of me. I'll never forget the first lines nor the last ones. Still gives me shivers.

"The Exorcist" scared the crap out of me. I was a teenager when I read it and can remember thinking it was pure evil. My brother lived in Georgetown at the time, just a few blocks from where the Exorcist "stairs" are located. I wonder if, as an adult, I'd find it as scary as I did back then.

The R.L. Stine books when I was younger! They were pretty scary for me but I still loved to read them anyways.

LOL I had to do a lot of that kind of reading for my childcare courses, absolutely terrifying I read Salems Lot as a teenager and it stayed with me for weeks afterwards.

I used to like reading scary books in high school and remember Pet Sematary scared the crap out of me! I've read a lot of Stephen King books and they were all pretty creepy but that one really stands out. Christine about the car was pretty scary too. These days I've realized that real life is scary enough as it is so I don't read scary books or watch scary movies anymore.

R.L. Stine books when I was around a kid. I have a big collection and I'm still trying to find all of the books I don't have. People kind of make rude comments that I still will sit down and read one...I just love them! Plus he just published 2 new ones.

The Lovecraft books scare me pretty good - they're a weird blend of cozy and creepy, I can't explain it.
House of Leaves bothered me a bit, but only if I read it late at night.

A few years ago I was home and my parents made me go through boxes of my stuff. I kept my very favorite ones (the fear street saga collection for example), and my mom donated the rest to the local middle school. My mom said the librarian was absolutely thrilled, because those books are still in high demand and apparently I had a lot they didn't already have.

Everytime I hit up a yard sale/thrift store or used book store I always hunt for them and also the Christopher Pike books. I'm glad there are others who enjoyed his books!!

Pet Cemetery was scary for sure, but It scared me more. I still refuse to watch the movie because the book scared me so much.
It also was not helpful in improving my general dislike of clowns.

The Pet Cemetery movie really scared me. I don't handle little kids getting killed very well. Watched 1/2 the movie with my hands over my eyes - but peeking of course

Misery. The suspense just killed me. I was 20- I reemmver because I lived with my brother- and I had to leave my room and go sit next to him to finish reading it! Pet Cemetary was a close second! :::shudder:::

IMO the childbirth classes were scarier. That was when stuff started getting REAL. No kidding. I remember telling my then husband that I completely changed my mind and wasn't ready to have a baby. I was so put out that he said we should stop going...I kept saying no, we had to go, the doctor said so and his response was basically 'what, they are going to stop you from having the kid?' I think we only went twice and guess what? Had the baby anyway. My biggest beef with what to expect books was that they always compared the baby's size to food. I stopped eating all kinds of stuff after reading that book. I always was a creeped out by Rosemary's Baby. I read the book and it stuck with me for a long while. That and that creepy Flowers in the Attic book.

IT. I started reading it while we were camping when I was probably 14. The fact that a person on this thread has a clown avatar (although not Pennywise) is ironic...

The *really* ironic thing is, I'm not particularly fond of clowns myself, but he kind of goes along with my screen name so I went with it.

In Cold Blood. Without a doubt! Like the previously mentioned book about Ted Bundy, when it's real, it's a lot scarier!

The Stand by Stephen King. Read as a young adult and slept with the lights on for a while
Amittyville Horror was another one
For all you Goosebumps fans - saw a preview for a movie with Jack Black that has all the characters from the books coming alive. I never read the books but my kids loved them - 20 year old son said his scariest was the one about a camera?

A lot of you already mentioned books that totally creeped me out.
When I was a teenager I used to babysit the little girls next door. One time I was reading The Amityville Horror after the girls went to sleep. Stupid. When the parents came home I had to walk home in the middle of the night. I was so scared!
Stephen King books always creep me out. The Shining, The Stand and Needful Things really scared me.

The Stand by Stephen King for me, too. In Cold Blood and Rosemary's Baby are also high in the list.

The Stand by Stephen King. I couldn't read it in my room and when I was done with it I had to leave it in the attic instead of in the bookcase with all my other books. I eventually threw it out when we did an attic clean out. I read a few of his books when I was younger they were almost all really scary but that one was the worst to me. I didn't read It or Pet Cemetery because my sister said they were really really scary so they may be worse but I have no intention of finding out.
