On the other thread a poster said she was advised to use Redken shampoo AND conditioner. I just bought Its a 10 Leave In Conditioner but I'm thinking of trying the Redken shampoo. I've been using Kirkland brand for a while and I think I'm ready for a change. So what say the Peas, do you HAVE to use both of the same line?

I have no idea if it's bad to use a mix of brands or not. I'm sure someone will say it is and that there are reasons why they work better when used together.
What happens for me is that I don't use conditioner every time I shampoo, so if I buy shampoo and conditioner of one brand at the same time, I run out of shampoo first. Then, if I decide to switch shampoos, I still have conditioner left. I end up with multiple partial bottles of conditioner.

I do use the same brand and the same line in the brand. I use Bumble and Bumble for curls. I think it keeps my hair soft and shiny.

I use the matching sets of shampoo and conditioner. A long time ago someone told me you get better results that way since all the chemicals are meant to work together.

No. I use a prescription shampoo that doesn't have conditioner.

Yes. I use a brand called Seven and I use the shampoo, conditioner, pre-blow dry spray, sun protection and beach spray. I occasionally use Living Proof de-frizz or Bumble & Bumble straighten, mostly because I bought them in large quantities before I started using Seven and I still have some left.

I had multiple coupons at CVS plus some extra bucks so I got the big 10 oz size for about $15. I actually use Wen, which I love and won't switch from, but I also wanted a lighter weight leave in and if heard about this stuff from so many on the board, I decided to give it a try.

I am the Pea who got told this. By a hairdresser. I was just in the salon because my friend was making an appointment. He didn't try to sell me anything, and just gave a recommendation based on my oily hair. Because he wasn't trying to sell me anything, I trust his advice ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) And I usually buy the set of shampoo/conditioner. I think the OCD part of my brain just likes it that way. Redken was too expensive for be BTW, so I ended up with a different brand of cleansing shampoo, and I got my hairproblem fixed ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

Except that if I have conditioner left, I just buy shampoo and use up the old conditioner first because I don't have a lot of room in the shower for tons of partial bottles of stuff. Then when I need new conditioner and shampoo, I'll buy the same brand of both.

Yes. I use Matrix Biolage volume formula for both.

Nope. I used Redken' s sulfate free shampoo. I use Pantene conditioner (anti-frizz type-they change the name of it two or three times per year, so I can't say what the current name is.). Conditioner doesn't sulfates, so there is no reason for me to use the matching product.

Usually I will buy the same brand, but at times I will use one shampoo with a different brand conditioner.
Is there a Beauty Brands near you? In-store & online they are having their annual $13.99 litre sale. Great deal on name brands. Shipping is free on $50+ purchases. Some brands aren't available online though.

I have been told/heard it's better to use both of the same range but I've never known if it was factual or not to be honest. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't...depends on what I have on hand and I don't notice any discernable difference either way. I found this online (oprah.com)

I tend to change brands all the time. If I have the same type it is only a coincidence.

I use the cheap V05 shampoo and conditioner. My hair is fine and a bit thin, so I don't need anything special for my hair.

I use Head and Shoulders and alternate that with Redken shampoo and conditioner or Tresemme conditioner. I don't shampoo every day since my curls are fussy when I do.

No. I alternate Head and Shoulders with another shampoo (brands vary based on what deals I get). I use whatever conditioner is available, and I don't condition every day. If my shampoo and conditioner match, it is a total accident. I use each bottle until it's empty then grab a random replacement from the hall closet where I keep the family stash.
My hair is very thick and full, and I keep it quite short. I might be more picky about what I put in my hair if I wore it longer.

I used to mix and match, but someone once told me the same thing (the products are made to work together chemically). So, I switched to matching sets and have done it that way ever since. I have no way to determine if this is, in fact, true, but it's still what I do. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) ETA - I've now thread through the other posts. Thanks cmpeter for the info!

I think the perception is that they will work better if you use a matched pair and I bet almost every hairstylist will tell you that.
However, I'd be *very* surprised if science actually bears that out.

I mainly use Herbal Essences. If it is on sale I buy both the shampoo and conditioner, otherwise I just buy the conditioner and then a cheaper shampoo. To me, the conditioner is more important than the shampoo.

I don't *have* to but I currently do. I like Redken, I use their Blonde Glam range. I think it keeps my highlighted hair from turning brassy and I like that the conditioner is a bit 'heavy' and I think it helps tame my hair which can tend to frizz a bit. I also like the slight grapefruit scent they both have. I don't think it works any better because they are both from the same range...I just happen to like both and therefore don't see the point in trying a different one. I have in the past used different brands of shampoo and conditioner, but since trying these I've been happy with both products and been using them for several years now and so I'm sticking with them.

I rarely, if ever, change brands. When I find something that works for me, I stick with it...for years!
I've tried to use the same brand shampoo and conditioner but I've yet to find a pair that I love. I use Biolage shampoo, Kerastase conditioner, It's a 10 mask and It's a 10 leave-in conditioner every single day, and I rarely have a bad hair day.
I've had stylists try to convince me that I will get better results using the same brand, but that has not been the case for me. There are so many factors to consider: dry or oily scalp, how often you wash, how soft or hard your water is, whether you have natural or color-treated hair, and the texture and amount of hair you have. I think you have to experiment to determine what works for you.

The formula has changed for the Biolage shampoo I've used for ten years and Redken was recommended for me recently as a replacement. After reading how much you like it, I will give it a try after I finish the last bottle I have.

I try to use the same brand & scent, only because I don't want summer rain scented shampoo to blend with kiwi conditioner and end up smelling badly.
But, shampoo always runs out before conditioner in my house, so I often just use whatever is on the shelf.

I've never really thought about it to be honest. I generally shampoo and conditioner at the same time and just buy one of a few brands that I like to use... whichever brand is on sale at the time. I've never really thought about mixing and matching brands, though I know it's happened. I just buy whatever brand I like that is on sale and then always in the pairs. Something to ponder I suppose.
